What do you look for in a name?

Ultimately it is, do I feel like it’s the one for that kid?

But my more specific criteria are:

  • do we both like it?
  • does it have a nice meaning?
  • does the meaning of the name mean something special to us?
  • does it work in our languages/countries?
  • does it have negative connotations? (Can be because it’s tied to a person we don’t like or a famous figure or sounds like a bad word…)
  • does it work with our last name and with sibling’s name? (That’s mainly because sibling’s name has a strong ending and I do like a lot of names with the same ending for both genders - wouldn’t be the same with a -a ending for example)

I think that’s the main ones.

nickname options
look of the name
pronunciation (is it going to be hard to prn?)
easy to spell?
vibes / feel of the name - * very important to me *
do i reallyyy love it
will it be okay on a grown up (like when the child grows up)

Does it sound okay with our last name? Are there any associations like famous people or brand names that it could be closely related to? Would it be overly difficult for others to spell or pronounce? How popular is the name/will they be just one of many ___'s? Are there any nicknames (my husband and I both have short names so we wanted options for nicknames)? Then of course, the hardest one, do both my husband and I agree that it’s a good name that we would use?
