What do you think about baby naming consultants?

I think being a baby name consultant could be a lot of fun but the consensus seems to be that it’s all for people who are rich in dollars and poor in sense since the price of a consultation can be up to several thousand.

What are your thoughts around baby name consulting? Would you ever consider using or providing these services? Could baby naming one day become a major industry just like weddings? I’d love to hear any and all thoughts/opinions :tulip:

The only reason I can really see for why anyone would use one is if the parents had different taste and couldn’t communicate decently about it. Alternatively they just have too much money. If anyone has a better reason I’m open to hearing it

It is such a bizarre thing to me. It is kind of like those services that pick your wardrobe for you. I don’t understand why people want/need them.

There are so many free resources (websites, blogs, YouTube channels, podcasts, etc.) that help people name babies, I really can’t see why anyone would spend the money to bring a third party on board.

If you’re into that and you want to spend money for it go right ahead! People pay money to be in escape rooms and all other sorts of non essential things. I know [name_u]Ive[/name_u] spent way to much time thinking of baby names so for some people outsourcing that might be the way to go.

Lol I do want one of these services where people pick a wardrobe for me, I know a lot of people see clothes as a way to express themselves but to me it’s just a chore, and a stressful one because there’s so many social conventions and mainly, I can’t seem to find any interest in clothes. I’ve tried so many times, but I can’t.

I guess some people think the same way of names: it’s important, they want something meaningful, beautiful, but they don’t wasn’t to spend time on it or just feel overwhelmed and they want someone to narrow it down for them to a couple of names they would love instead of browsing for hours on end and see all the same names again without falling in love with any. [name_u]Free[/name_u] resources are nice but not personalized. They want someone to help find the perfect name for them specifically.

I’m not sure I could - probably because naming is so personal, and so a lot of people would want to do it themselves?, Plus, it is something most people can manage themselves? Sure, naming can be difficult (though for some people, it’s easy), but I don’t think a lot of ‘non-namenerds’ see it as overwhelming as a planning a wedding?

I wouldn’t use them, when I’ve got NB :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: and so many name loves of my own?

I think it could be useful, if people were really struggling, if they had money to spare, and wanted outside insight. Am I comfortable with the idea of it costing thousands? No - I find that odd.
I do think it would be a fun job though.

I do like the idea of baby websites, magazines, channels or blogs etc could have a name consultant who people write in to, like a sort of agony aunt but for names though?

I had no idea they were so expensive! Here I thought they were like $20. I watch some name consultants on TikTok, and while I think it’s interesting, names are so personal to me as a namenerd I’d never give that over to someone else. Being a name consultant would be so cool though.

I guess I could see it being useful if, say, expectant parents were hurting their relationship over naming issues, but even then, the money would be better spent on a therapist :grimacing:

There really are a great number of free resources out there. Books, tv shows, baby name books, family trees, others’ opinions, music, history, baby name sites…it seems frivolous to pay someone to name my child. I guess if you have money to spare, sure…

The only way I could see this really becoming a trend is if a celebrity or social media personality lights the fire, so to speak.

There used to be a series of posts on the Nameberry blog called the Name Sage that was like this! People would email in with a name dilemma and the Name Sage would give advice. I really enjoyed reading it, and often there would be a poll at the end, or you could comment with your own thoughts.

Wow, I would have never ever thought that they cost so much! I love watching some Tiktokers and YouTubers when doing my makeup or drinking my morning coffee, but wooow…
I do understand why this service exists, but it should definitely be more affordable considering there are even apps for baby names (Kinder etc)…

Okey, I have been thinking about it. There are some people here on Nameberry, who’s style I truly admire. I love every single combo they make, I always feel inspired by them and I genuinely think they are wayyy better at making combos than I am… So, I actually think that if I was stuck and I could afford it (I mean, thousands of euros is a bit insane), I would definitely reach out to them and I would 100% offer to pay for their advice. I mean, your child’s name is such an important decision. And I just think a lot of people don’t know about this forum. So in a way I really get the concept.

If you can’t communicate with your partner enough to come up with a name for your child, you shouldn’t be having children with them.

That being said, someone paying me to name their children would be a dream come true! Sooooo if anyone here has too much money and can’t pick a name for a child, you know who to message xoxo*

*For legal reasons, this is a joke

I would be very happy being a name consultant, but I wouldn’t be charging thousands. £100 maybe, that’s about 121.18 in US dollars.

Honestly the idea of a “name consultant” is just very weird and unnecessary to me. I think parents should be coming up with their babies names themselves and choose a name that they both feel connected to and like, instead of having a stranger pick out a name. There are so many places to get name inspiration besides someone you’re paying, and something about someone getting money for suggesting names to people they don’t know in real life is really unappealing to me. I’m not saying it’s wrong for people to use them, but it just seems so unneeded.

I see the value of some of the more established name consultants with backlogs so you can see precisely what their style is – people such as Swistle, [name_f]Kate[/name_f] of [name_f]Santa[/name_f] Nomina, and [name_u]Abby[/name_u] of Appellation [name_m]Mountain[/name_m] (formerly Name [name_u]Sage[/name_u] on here). From their websites fees range from free for Swistle, $50 for [name_f]Kate[/name_f], to $125 for [name_u]Abby[/name_u], so definitely not in the thousands.

Looking at the consultations they’ve gotten permission to post on their blogs, it seems like their utility seems to especially be for people in between a few names with no clear front runner; those that feel like they’ve looked at everything, like several, but nothing feels quite right; or for subsequent children when they feel like they’ve already used up their short list of favorites. I could writing in to one of them if I was really stuck and felt like I’ve been staring at the same short list going in circles, as you are guaranteed an in depth multi-page response from someone whose style you are familiar with and trust. I see the utility being having an outside set of eyes willing to spend a while thinking about and pondering your short list.
