What do you think about name Alvar

[name_m]Hi[/name_m],

I was looking for nice and rare scandinavian name and found name [name_m]Alvar[/name_m]. Now I am a bit concern about this name being “too rare”, is there a reason for it? (Always with rare names I am afraid it could mean something not nice in other languages)
What do you think about name? Any good/bad associasion with name? Any advice of nice(not necessarily rare) scandinavian name? Thanks!

I don’t have any bad associations with [name_m]Alvar[/name_m] or good ones either, I’ve never heard of the name before. It may be rare but it has familiar sounds so it doesn’t feel like an odd name.

oops scratch that I have heard of this name. Alvar is the name of a character in one of my favorite book series Keeper of the Lost Cities. He’s not a super important character but is a brother of a main character and is unfortunately bad, but I doubt anyone would associate the name with him. He’s not a big enough character that he wouldn’t make me dislike the name.

It’s handsome and seems easy to say and spell.

I’m more familiar with Hispanic names than Scandinavian names so it almost seems to me like you’re cutting off Alvaro/Alvarez but… I don’t dislike it!

I quite like it! I’m a huge [name_m]Lord[/name_m] of the Rings nerd, and to me it looks and sounds sort of like a mashup of the Ainur & Valar.

Ainur were the pantheon of gods who helped helped the single omnipotent creator, Ilúvatar, fashion the world through music. And then the Valar are basically a subset of Ainur . . . the simplest way to put is is that all Valar are Ainur, but not all Ainur are Valar. Valar are the special ones who didn’t just create with music, but who also came to to dwell on the earth and care for it.

Sorry for the long nerd rant. All that was to say that I think [name_m]Alvar[/name_m] has a beautiful, mythological, and romantic feel full of quiet strength.

I think [name_m]Alvar[/name_m] is a great find! As a previous poster stated, it is unusual but it has familiar sounds. I don’t think it’s too rare. I’d say go for it.

If you want more ideas: [name_m]Alvis[/name_m] | [name_m]Andor[/name_m] | [name_m]Fenrir[/name_m] | [name_m]Frey[/name_m] | [name_u]Loki[/name_u] | [name_m]Odin[/name_m] | Orvar | [name_m]Thor[/name_m] | [name_m]Torben[/name_m] | [name_m]Torquil[/name_m]

I like it and it is pretty rare compared to the female version [name_u]Alva[/name_u] which is super popular here in [name_u]Sweden[/name_u].
