I came across the name [name_f]Beulah[/name_f] in an LM [name_m]Montgomery[/name_m] book last night. She was a character of about 11 years old, with a younger sister named [name_f]Nancy[/name_f]. She was smart and social, but was also sarcastic and rather mean. Her mother was called [name_f]Stasia[/name_f]. Other young characters in the book are named [name_f]Gwendolen[/name_f], [name_f]Marigold[/name_f], [name_f]Varvara[/name_f], [name_f]Lily[/name_f], [name_f]Paula[/name_f], Hip, and Budge (last 2 are boys). So while [name_f]Beulah[/name_f] seemed to fit right in, I realized I’d never met a [name_f]Beulah[/name_f]!
What are you references for the name, and do you like it? I like it! It sounds a bit southern, like [name_f]Maisie[/name_f], [name_f]Tallulah[/name_f], [name_f]Delilah[/name_f], and [name_f]Blanche[/name_f].
To be completely honest, my first impression is that it looks a lot like ‘Beluga’, like the whale. I’d much prefer [name_f]Tallulah[/name_f] or [name_f]Delilah[/name_f].
There’s a song called “Is This Not the [name_m]Land[/name_m] of [name_f]Beulah[/name_f]” that I would have walked down the aisle to if DH hadn’t thought it was depressing/morbid.
[name_f]Beulah[/name_f] means marriage and is used in the Bible quite a bit.
So while it has lovely associations for me, it is a clunker. Almost to [name_f]Bertha[/name_f]'s level but not quite.
I’d absolutely love for it to take on new life and get some modern popularity though.
I always thought [name_f]Bessie[/name_f] was a joke name, the name of a cow, but that’s gaining traction these days. I’m not sure I even like [name_f]Bertha[/name_f], but I thought [name_f]Beulah[/name_f]'s sound was interesting. It starts off like “beautiful”.
My first thought was “Aw, hell no” and then I reconsidered… but my feelings didn’t change. I think it feels kind of old, clunky, and country. [name_f]Beulah[/name_f] is sitting on her front porch in a housecoat and curlers. It’s a shame… as a place name, [name_f]Beulah[/name_f], MI is both lovely and special for me.
For what it is worth, I think [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] [name_f]Maud[/name_f] is one of my favorite combinations ever.
I’m sorry, I just can’t get behind the name [name_f]Beulah[/name_f].
It’s unforgivingly southern and has an unfortunate cow association in my mind. Not only that, but I find the sound combination rather unpleasant? Kind of like an elongated burp, for lack of a better description.
I much prefer the other names mentioned in the book.
Sorry if this was too harsh! [name_m]Just[/name_m] trying to give an honest opinion!
When I think of [name_f]Beulah[/name_f], I think of the old [name_f]Mae[/name_f] [name_u]West[/name_u] line of: “[name_f]Beulah[/name_f], peel me a grape!”
[name_f]Dot[/name_f] [name_m]Draper[/name_m], I agree, [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] [name_f]Maud[/name_f] [name_m]Montgomery[/name_m] is one of my all-time favourite names! The whole thing! [name_m]Even[/name_m] styled as LM [name_m]Montgomery[/name_m] it looks cool.
