It’s a family name for me as well. It was my great great grandfather’s middle name, so I tend to think of it as a male name and as a middle. But the nn [name]Birdie[/name] would be a cute for a girl.

I think it works best in the middle spot.

If it were [name]Birdie[/name] for a girl, I would love to see it in the first name place!

A blogger I follow has a little one named [name]Gemma[/name] [name]Bird[/name] whom she tends to call [name]Birdie[/name], at least in posts. I think it’s pretty cute as nickname-ble middle. I think it is gender neutral enough to be a boy’s middle name too. I also think that you could sort of honor your family by using [name]Lark[/name] or [name]Wren[/name] (etc.) if you wanted!

I think [name]Bird[/name] is adorable. Definitely works on someone little, and I would kind of like to meet a grown up bearded chap called [name]Bird[/name]. That would be awesome. So I’m voting for first name for a boy.

I like it for either gender but it feels more masculine. I went to high school with a boy called [name]Bird[/name] (not his real name but that’s the only name he ever went by). Birds makes me think of these delicate little creatures but he was huge, at least 6ft tall yet the name fit him perfectly.

For a girl I like [name]Bird[/name]/[name]Birdie[/name] as a nn but it could work as a proper name

To make it look more name-y (and not just a word) you could spell it [name]Byrd[/name]. To me [name]Byrd[/name] looks more masculine while [name]Bird[/name] could be either gender

Middle name only.

I think it’s better as a nickname or middle name. [name]Birdie[/name] is cute, but to me, “[name]Bird[/name]” sounds extremely ugly. It’s a lot of harsh consonants and that “erd” is just a very unappealing sound to me. The -ie makes it a bit better. I do think it could make a very cool middle, especially for a more common first, but as a first I just can’t stand the sound.

A grown up bearded chap called [name]Bird[/name]… love it!

Good point. [name]Bird[/name] really doesn’t have the prettiest sound.

I agree with what a lot of people are saying -
[name]Birdie[/name] is an adorable nickname, so [name]Bird[/name] would work best as a middle name for a girl.

I’m not sure if someone’s already mentioned this, but I would personally avoid using it as a first name for a girl. This is because in the UK, some men call their girlfriends/wives their ‘bird’. It’s just not very elegant.
