[name_m]Hi[/name_m]
My husband is a big baseball fan and played catcher when he was younger. He wants to name our baby boy Catcher but I’m not sure if its usable. We both like it as a name but don’t want him to get made fun of for it or anything like that. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think we can use it?

In my opinion, it too wayout. could you name your baby after your husband’s favourite baseball player.
It sounds really out there to me. I personally wouldn’t do it. What about [name_m]Fletcher[/name_m] or [name_u]Chase[/name_u] instead?
[name_m]Hi[/name_m] there.
I love it! I’m a huge baseball fan too. But I actually heard this name in the movie from 2002, Down With [name_u]Love[/name_u]. It’s the name of [name_m]Ewan[/name_m] [name_m]McGregor[/name_m]'s character. It’s not an amazing character or an amazing movie, but I thought that the name was super charming. And I love that it sounds like a ballplayer. Also, the nn Catch is adorable.
A few other suggestions that sound ballplayer-y to me:
[name_m]Ace[/name_m]
[name_u]Cal[/name_u]
[name_u]Casey[/name_u]
[name_u]Chase[/name_u]
[name_m]Gehrig[/name_m]
[name_m]Gibson[/name_m]/[name_m]Gib[/name_m]/[name_m]Gibby[/name_m]
[name_m]Hank[/name_m]
[name_m]Jack[/name_m]
[name_m]Nolan[/name_m]
Patch
[name_m]Tucker[/name_m]
[name_m]Thatcher[/name_m]-maybe not really, but it’s cute & an alternative to Catcher.
[name_f]Hope[/name_f] this helps.
Maybe as a middle? I don’t know about naming a child after an interest/passion/occupation as we have no idea where this child’s interests/talents may be. He may not be interested in baseball in the least and may otherwise have talents in other areas but not be excited about being named Catcher. [name_m]Just[/name_m] something to think about.
Yep, what @jonquils said. The first thing that comes to mind is the sexual slang term. It’s a pretty well-known one, at least among younger people.
[name_m]Thatcher[/name_m] is much more usable and an awesome name that remains uncommon.
I agree with rosjune, [name_m]Thatcher[/name_m] is an established name based on a profession and therefore a much more usable alternative, but I’m also the type that despite having a very classical taste in first names also picks odd middle names.
This might be connected to the fact that I don’t live in an English speaking country and can get away with it, but regardless I think most people can get away with more creative middle names if their heart is set on it since most people won’t know someone’s middle name.
My husband is a big baseball fan too, but I think Catcher is a bit much. My first thoughts were [name_m]Ace[/name_m] and [name_u]Cal[/name_u], both already suggested by previous posters.
My husband is from Maryland, so a name like [name_u]Cal[/name_u]/[name_m]Calvin[/name_m] is a direct but subtle tribute to Orioles’ great [name_u]Cal[/name_u] Ripken [name_m]Jr[/name_m]. - maybe you and your husband could brainstorm similar links to his favorite teams?
I personally wouldn’t use it, but with the surname occupation trend, I can see it catch(er)ing on. I’m immediately reminded of Catcher in the [name_m]Rye[/name_m], take that as you will.
I wouldn’t recommend it. Far too much potential for tasteless jokes and teasing.
I googled “baseball inspired baby names” and this is what comes up http://https://www.purewow.com/family/baseball-baby-names
I also recommend looking up some team players you like. Maybe use a themed nickname?

[name_m]Link[/name_m] didn’t work. There is an online post you can search.
I think [name_m]Fielder[/name_m] would be a better alternative, something about Catcher just doesn’t sound like a name to me. It’s a little too wordy to my ears.
I would really urge you not to name your son Catcher! As a young person… we immediately associate that with a sexual connotation (Pitcher/Catcher). Of course I don’t know if that will still be the case when your son is older but it’s not a risk I’d be willing to take personally! I would suggest naming your son maybe after a specific athlete instead, if your husband really wants that baseball connection.
I love it, reminds me of Catcher in the [name_m]Rye[/name_m].
[name_m]Hi[/name_m] again.
Well, I’m 36, so I suppose out of the loop. I’ve never heard of the sexual term. But that’s so weird that pitcher & catcher are solely associated w/that instead of baseball. Oh well…
Anyway, how about Catch as a nn for a more classic name? Something like…
[name_m]Christopher[/name_m]
[name_m]Charles[/name_m]
[name_m]Caspar[/name_m]
[name_m]Calvin[/name_m] (two baseball names in one!)
[name_u]Calder[/name_u]
You get the idea. [name_f]Hope[/name_f] this helps.
Thanks everyone
I had no idea that its used as a sexual term so we’re not going to use it because of that.
We like the idea of using another name with Catch as a nickname and we’ll probably do that.
