What do you think of Dempsey for a girl?

I absolutely loove the name [name_m]Dempsey[/name_m] for a girl and was wondering what other people thought of it. Her middle name would be Covington and we would probably just call her Demps for short.
Now before you say anything, I feel like I should probably tell you a little bit about my naming style, since I find it to be very different from what most other people like. I love names for girls that could be boys names ([name_u]Chandler[/name_u], [name_u]Devon[/name_u], [name_u]Logan[/name_u], [name_u]Ryan[/name_u], etc.) and think they are very pretty and not at all too masculine. Also, I’ve heard [name_m]Dempsey[/name_m] is a name that grows on you the more you think about it, so please keep an open mind! Thanks!

I like it! It’s NMS, but I like it for you (given the kind of names you gravitate to).

For more insight, check out @alimez’s post started [name_f]May[/name_f] 11th; she had a lot of feedback.

I find [name_m]Dempsey[/name_m] to somehow remind me of [name_u]Chelsea[/name_u], for whatever reason. They both sound like they are from the same style, but I don’t really love [name_u]Chelsea[/name_u] all too much. However I still like Demosey a lot more than [name_u]Chelsea[/name_u].
Regarding masculinity, I thought [name_m]Dempsey[/name_m] sounded like a girl’s name from the start. I think [name_m]Dempsey[/name_m] Covington sounds great! However, I’ve never really fully respected nicknames like Demps because they’re not real names and I don’t like how people add the -s at the end (e.g [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] nn [name_f]Els[/name_f] pronounced Elles). I do have to agree that [name_m]Dempsey[/name_m] is growing on me.

Yes I have already- I actually posted and was the one who brought it back to life! It’s from 2011 (and she wanted to use the nn [name_f]Demi[/name_f], which I don’t agree on) and I wanted to see if opinions have changed since 5 years ago. Sorry if me posting on it made a duplicate but I wanted to get my own opinions (esp on my nn and mn).

I can’t say I’m a fan. It’s just a surname - the surname of a particularly good looking [name_m]Patrick[/name_m], but a surname nonetheless. Some names work well as surnames and as given names, but I honestly believe [name_m]Dempsey[/name_m] isn’t one of them. “Demps” sounds clunky and unattractive in my opinion, as a nickname. It reminds me of dumps/damp and other similar words. I think [name_f]Demi[/name_f] would be a better alternative.

Not a fan. [name_m]Dempsey[/name_m] Covington is not even remotely feminine. “Demps” is not a cute nickname. Honestly, it sounds a bit dumb.

I really don’t think it’s an attractive name at all for a girl, especially Demps.

All I think of is [name_m]Patrick[/name_m] [name_m]Dempsey[/name_m]. …Then when I think some more, cars vaguely come to mind. [name_m]Dempsey[/name_m] is pretty masculine to me. Sorry, I don’t like it on a girl.

Now, [name_m]Dempsey[/name_m] “Demps” Covington is the polar opposite of what’s beautiful to me, but I’m thinking my opinion or anyone else’s isn’t really going to matter here.

You have said that the name should grow on us and to keep an open mind and everyone has different tastes (these statements are from this thread and the old referenced thread). And just by the way you said those things, it sounds like your mind is already made up and there’s nothing anyone can say to change it.

In my opinion, Covington just sounds like a last name, not a middle name. Especially not for a girl.

And [name_m]Dempsey[/name_m]…Well, since you’ve already gone through the previously mentioned thread, you know about the [name_m]Patrick[/name_m] [name_m]Dempsey[/name_m] association (my initial reaction) and the literal garbage dumpster thing (my second, third, and fourth reaction).

Also, I know from the other thread that you think getting better friends will solve bullying? This is simply untrue. I had an ugly name when I was younger and I got picked on and I hated it so much. Bullies are everywhere, and having the name [name_m]Dempsey[/name_m] Covington will just put a bigger target on her back.

Based on your response in the other thread, you clearly didn’t like what most people had to say about [name_m]Dempsey[/name_m]. Making a new thread about the same topic is not going to yield different results, I’m afraid.

It seems like you’re looking for permission to go ahead and name your girl this, but she’s your child, that’s all the permission you need.

You should keep in mind for the future that if you post on a forum asking for opinions, people are going to have negative things to say, no matter what. This is especially true in cases like this, with a topic that most people will have an extreme opinion on.

I have to agree with previous posters. [name_m]Dempsey[/name_m] is very [name_m]Patrick[/name_m] [name_m]Dempsey[/name_m], and [name_m]Dempsey[/name_m] Covington sounds more like a double barreled surname than a first and a middle for a baby.

With all due respect to you and your preferred style, I think you can do better for your child.

I dislike [name_m]Dempsey[/name_m] on a girl. It is too masculine.

[name_f]Lovely[/name_f] Scottish name! Gets my vote  I have a friend with this name, and it is not weird at all. I hardly think of it as “stand out” anymore. It is pretty, easy to say, easy to spell… Go for it!

It’s not my style (even though I like unisex names), but if you love it then go for it! I agree with other posters that it reminds me of McDreamy but that’s not a bad connotation.

My only thoughts are that [name_f]Demi[/name_f] would be a much cuter/feminine nickname. [name_m]Dempsey[/name_m] Covington Lastname has a nice flow but will most likely be assumed to be a boy, maybe a more feminine middle name?

Sorry, but I’m not a fan. My mind goes to [name_m]Patrick[/name_m] [name_m]Dempsey[/name_m] and, aside from that, I don’t think the sound is very pretty. Sounds like “dumpy” to me.

Maybe if you paired it with something very feminine like [name_m]Dempsey[/name_m] [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] or [name_m]Dempsey[/name_m] [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f], I might could get on board.

Ultimately, if you like it, go for it! Everyone has their own style. That’s just my opinion.

It’s not my style, but it’s pretty. If people will accept [name_u]Kennedy[/name_u], [name_u]Cassidy[/name_u], And [name_u]Dillon[/name_u] for girls names there’s no reason they won’t like [name_m]Dempsy[/name_m]. Why not [name_f]Demi[/name_f] for nn? [name_m]Just[/name_m] wondering? I don’t usually go for surnames for girls but I always liked [name_f]Chesney[/name_f] for girl but feared people would say I named after [name_m]Kenny[/name_m]. I’m a fan but not that big a fan. Lol

Sorry, but to me [name_m]Dempsey[/name_m] sounds like dump, dumpster, clumsy… If you love it so much, maybe use it as a nickname for something else?

@manna, I would kindly disagree with some of shared thoughts.

“Bullying” - children have such varied and different names these days, with crazy nicknames, I don’t think this as much of an issue as in the past as parent seek unique monikers for their children.

“Different results” - I do not think she was “looking to yield different results” - opinions and popularity of names do change, especially within a 5 year period.

As far as [name_m]Dempsey[/name_m] for a girl, I think it would fit right in with girls named [name_u]Delaney[/name_u], [name_u]Sloane[/name_u] and [name_u]Sutton[/name_u].

This being said, I personally don’t prefer “Demps” as a nn. I would probably go with “D” or Emsey or [name_m]Desy[/name_m].
