What do you think of Edith?

My husband loves [name_f]Edith[/name_f] for our first baby girl with the nickname of [name_f]Edie[/name_f]. I like it too, but I’m not 100% sold.

Some of my favorites are: [name_u]Vivian[/name_u], [name_f]Saffron[/name_f], [name_f]Hazel[/name_f], [name_f]Maxine[/name_f], and [name_f]Iris[/name_f]

I do like [name_f]Edie[/name_f], but the full name is a bit stodgy to me. What do you think?

[name_f]Love[/name_f], love [name_f]Edith[/name_f]! and nickname [name_f]Edie[/name_f] is so cute!
[name_u]Vivian[/name_u] is very pretty, and not too common.
[name_f]Saffron[/name_f], I dont really like it, but it has a certain charm about it.
[name_f]Hazel[/name_f] is a very sweet and beautiful name that will age well with the kid
[name_f]Maxine[/name_f], knew a dog by that name, but I do see the appeal though.
[name_f]Iris[/name_f] is the same as [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] Good luck!

I like your name choices!

[name_f]Edith[/name_f] has such a lovely flow off the tongue and [name_f]Edie[/name_f] is too cute. We had a great neighbor with this name growing up.
[name_u]Vivian[/name_u] is so sweet and [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] sounds so soft and kind.

Those are my favorites from your list

Lovelovelove [name_f]Edith[/name_f], and [name_f]Edie[/name_f] is just the icing on the cake. I [name_f]LOVE[/name_f] [name_f]Hazel[/name_f], and like [name_f]Iris[/name_f], as well, but there’s just something about [name_f]Edith[/name_f] I adore. I think [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] [name_f]Edith[/name_f] or [name_f]Edith[/name_f] [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] would be adorable, actually. A bit too much vintage for me, but I’d be happy to meet one!

Recently I’ve really come to [name_f]LOVE[/name_f] the combo [name_f]Anne[/name_f]-[name_f]Claire[/name_f] [name_f]Edith[/name_f], which I think is just adorable and the right blend of normal and vintage. I don’t know if it’s to your taste or not, but I figured I’d mention it. I actually really like the option of [name_f]Edith[/name_f] as a middle. It seems like you’re not convinced, but your husband loves it. Something like [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] [name_f]Edith[/name_f] might be a lovely compromise.

[name_f]Edith[/name_f] has been a long time favorite of mine. I think has elegance, and a bit of quirkiness. It’s not like other classics- [name_f]Georgiana[/name_f], [name_f]Alice[/name_f], [name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f]- in that it’s awkward in a beautiful way. [name_f]Edie[/name_f] is an adorable nickname. I like it with [name_f]Hazel[/name_f], [name_u]Vivian[/name_u], [name_f]Maxine[/name_f], and [name_f]Iris[/name_f].

[name_f]Edie[/name_f] is indeed a cute nn for [name_f]Edith[/name_f].

[name_f]Edith[/name_f] [name_f]Iris[/name_f] or [name_f]Iris[/name_f] [name_f]Edith[/name_f] would be lovely combos.

I always adore [name_f]Edith[/name_f]. I don’t care about [name_m]Eddie[/name_m], but [name_f]Edith[/name_f] is such a pretty name.

[name_f]Edita[/name_f] (uh-[name_f]DEE[/name_f]-tuh) is a form of [name_f]Edith[/name_f] that might appeal - [name_f]Edita[/name_f] [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] or [name_f]Edita[/name_f] [name_u]Vivian[/name_u] both sound lovely!

I love [name_f]Edith[/name_f] and works perfectly with your other favourites : )

[name_f]Edith[/name_f] and [name_f]Eadie[/name_f] are both very cute, they are on my list. I also love [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] which I think is the same name style

I think many people here on Nameberry are name snobs (no offense!) but they don’t like some of the common, more normal less exciting names that the general population likes. For example, many here love the name [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] (which is beautiful, but honestly if I ever heard anyone I knew for real name their child this I’d think (are you for real, that is such a mouthful and very pretentious sounding). [name_f]Edith[/name_f] to me is one of those vintage names that may be making a comeback on NB, but to me it sounds so old fashioned and dated, like [name_f]Bertha[/name_f] or [name_m]Herbert[/name_m]. It might appeal to your nameberry style naming tastes, but ask yourself if you were a little girl in elementary or junior high, wouldn’t you hate having this name. As a kid I loved reading the Sweet [name_f]Valley[/name_f] High books and [name_f]Edith[/name_f] was [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]'s best friend, who was sweet but a bit nerdy. I guess that is why I have the association I do. [name_f]Edie[/name_f] is a cute nn though.

I know a little girl named [name_f]Edie[/name_f]. She’s about five, and it’s incredibly cute on her. [name_m]Little[/name_m] kids can make any old-fashioned name seem sweet again. I think [name_f]Edie[/name_f] or [name_f]Edith[/name_f] is just adorable, and I encourage you to use it. I love [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] as well (obviously - see signature), and [name_f]Iris[/name_f] is pretty. [name_f]Edith[/name_f] [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] would be amazing.

While [name_f]Edie[/name_f] is cute I honestly cannot stand [name_f]Edith[/name_f]. It’s one of those old fashioned names I wish would never make a comeback. Definitely too fusty for my taste.

Big fan of [name_f]Edith[/name_f] and love [name_f]Edie[/name_f] for a nickname. It was a suggestion for us but hubs vetoed.

I think also though that it completely depends where you live. Here in [name_f]England[/name_f], or at least in my little section of it, [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] is a perfectly normal name. And even a little bit boring because it’s so popular, for me personally! As for being a mouthful, [name_m]Alexander[/name_m], a name which you cannot argue is a not common, more normal, less exciting one, has exactly the same number of syllables. So. I’m not trying to be rude, but coming on here and calling many people name “snobs” is a little impolite! Everyone on Nameberry should be allowed their own naming tastes, and you may not like [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] or [name_f]Edith[/name_f], but lots of people do, so try to see their point of view and respect it.

By the way, my closest friend’s brand new niece has just been named [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f]. So I’m a little touchy about it, sorry!

I love [name_f]Edith[/name_f], and I’ve loved it for a while. I fell in love with it visiting the Biltmore Estate a few years ago, so most of the imagery I associate with [name_f]Edith[/name_f] is elegant and refined. I really don’t understand where the frumpy feeling comes from. To me [name_f]Edith[/name_f] is very light and airy with a silent, dignified strength to it. [name_f]Edith[/name_f] has a strong quality that most popular, “liquid” names lack. [name_f]Edith[/name_f] is a soft shade of lavender, ornate Victorian glass, mahogany, the smell of a flower garden in full bloom, and the first snowfall of the winter season. I think an [name_f]Edith[/name_f] would be intelligent, kind, and quiet. It’s hard for me to imagine an extroverted [name_f]Edith[/name_f], although I’m sure it could happen. :stuck_out_tongue:

I think it’s strange that names like [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] and [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] - which in all honesty feel far more frumpy to me than [name_f]Edith[/name_f] - are readily embraced whereas [name_f]Edith[/name_f] still makes us hesitate. I think an [name_f]Edith[/name_f] would fit right in with [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] and [name_f]Lillian[/name_f].
