I was just wondering what you guys think of [name_f]Marisol[/name_f]? I have [name_f]Marisol[/name_f] on my list of names I love but haven’t thought about the name a lot it’s there but I can’t imagine using the name. The other day I made OH go through my list he’s incredibly fickle when it comes to names and only truly loves the name [name_m]Malachi[/name_m] and he liked [name_f]Marisol[/name_f]. He said that he had gone of [name_f]Marianne[/name_f] and after watching Killing [name_f]Eve[/name_f] (yes really late to the party with that one) isn’t into [name_f]Eve[/name_f]. After this disappointment as I love both he said he could get on board with [name_f]Marisol[/name_f] & [name_f]Clara[/name_f] not pronounced clair uh the other way but terrible at phonetically writing out names
Anyways I love [name_f]Clara[/name_f]! I could see myself with a [name_f]Clara[/name_f] but it also got me thinking about [name_f]Marisol[/name_f]. I think [name_f]Marisol[/name_f] is lovely I really like the religious ties to Virgin [name_f]Mary[/name_f] and the sun/sea. But I was just wondering is it odd to give a child a very obviously Spanish name with no connection to the language/culture. Is it even stranger as our potential children have such a culturally diverse background so why throw another culture into the mix?
[name_f]Lilia[/name_f] is our daughter’s name and I think represents some of her cultural background as she’s Russian used in [name_u]Israel[/name_u] and across a lot of Europe. [name_f]My[/name_f] daughter has Ashkenazi heritage. But also is [name_m]Black[/name_m] British (Ugandan descent) and has Celtic ancestry with her middle names being honour names from both sides. I like that [name_f]Lilia[/name_f] name represents that. [name_f]Marisol[/name_f] would not. With this cultural mix for any future children would [name_f]Marisol[/name_f] work? Also does [name_f]Marisol[/name_f] work with [name_f]Lilia[/name_f]?
Anyways in a nutshell would [name_f]Marisol[/name_f] work? [name_u]Or[/name_u] is [name_f]Clara[/name_f] a better fit?
I think [name_f]Marisol[/name_f] is very pretty. I also love the meaning, and I think it stands out from the crowd in a subtle way.
As for the culture thing - I think it’s fine. People borrow names from other cultures all the time. In fact, I’d say that most people in Western cultures have names that aren’t actually from their homeland (including myself).
While [name_f]Marisol[/name_f] does read quite Spanish, the vast majority of people have no context or perspective on the etymology of names. Chances are, most people won’t even notice.
As for cohesiveness, it goes lovely with your daughter’s name - [name_f]Lilia[/name_f] and [name_f]Marisol[/name_f], it rolls of the tongue so nicely. I think it fits just about as well as [name_f]Clara[/name_f]. [name_f]Clara[/name_f] is the more “expected” choice, so if you want something that will draw less attention, [name_f]Clara[/name_f] would fit that bill. However, I think [name_f]Marisol[/name_f] actually goes perfectly with [name_f]Lilia[/name_f].
@kasatka thank you! Honestly it’s good to know that you think [name_f]Marisol[/name_f] would work despite the Spanish origins and us not being Spanish! Also I suppose it would be a toss up between going more expected or unexpected thank you
@Greyblue honestly it’s funny how names can just suddenly be on your mind! Thank you for the positivity surrounding [name_f]Lilia[/name_f] & [name_f]Marisol[/name_f]
I have had similar feelings because I have always loved the name [name_f]Mariana[/name_f] but I am not Spanish/Hispanic at all so I feel like it would be really weird for me to use the name. For me personally I have so many other girl names I love I haven’t had to truly think about it too much but I’m not sure what I would do if I was ever seriously considering using the name. I think some people might find it strange for you to use the name [name_f]Marisol[/name_f], but many people wouldn’t mind at all, so it’s a hard choice to make.
I love [name_f]Marisol[/name_f] for all your reasons as well but I would definitely associate it with a Spanish name (wouldn’t assume a person is Spanish though). This is because I first heard the name in a Cheetah Girls movie ages ago and the character was Spanish… the whole movie was in Spain I think LOL
I like [name_f]Clara[/name_f] but find it a little plain with my other favorites…
But if it were me I would find it hard to get past the Spanish issue
I like [name_f]Marisol[/name_f], but it does depend on where you live. I kind of prefer “Marisol and Lilia” over “Clara and Lilia.”
[name_f]Marisol[/name_f] fits with [name_f]Lilia[/name_f], because the name [name_f]Lilia[/name_f] makes me think of lilies, and [name_f]Marisol[/name_f] keeps with the nature theme.
[name_f]May[/name_f] I suggest [name_f]Marigold[/name_f]? Kind of fits with [name_f]Lilia[/name_f], because marigolds are flowers.
I think Lilia and Marisol go pretty good together actually it has this nice unexpectedness, but Lilia and Clara have this sweet ethereal elegance to it that I love. Speaking from the perspective of a Hispanic, I do think it’s kinda odd to use Marisol if you’re not Latino or connected to the culture in anyway, it’s not a name I personally read as multicultural as say Luna or Cruz, ultimately it’s up to you to see you you’re personally comfortable with, I personally think it’d be kinda odd but at the same time I wouldn’t be very surprised to see it on someone who isn’t Hispanic.
Objectively just going based on which is my fav sibset I love Lilia and Clara together so that’s my fav! So sweet and ethereal, kind of a cottagecore feel, I think it’s very sweet, and I think it complements your mixed heritage very nicely
[name_f]Lilia[/name_f] and [name_f]Marisol[/name_f] give off a very Spanish vibe to me while [name_f]Lilia[/name_f] and [name_f]Clara[/name_f] have a continental European feel to them which seems to fit at least part of the heritage much better.
As a name [name_f]Marisol[/name_f] is quite pretty (though “sea and sun” always jump out to me) but again, just feels very Spanish and I’d be surprised to see it used without that connection - though it absolutely can!
[name_f]Clara[/name_f] is one of my favourite names, especially with the rhymes-with-car pronunciation, it feels incredibly international and super elegant.
@Emarkulics thank you for responding and I have to say I absolutely love [name_f]Mariana[/name_f] and I agree with you I just wish he liked more names of course it’s all hypothetical but he’s a challenge!
@honeyfreesia thank you didn’t even know about the cheetah girl reference and I agree I think the name being obviously Spanish is a bit of a hurdle to get over!
@reginaveveritelor thank you I agree [name_f]Marisol[/name_f] & [name_f]Lilia[/name_f] nature connection is sweet and thank you for suggesting [name_f]Marigold[/name_f]. I really like [name_f]Marigold[/name_f]. Random question but do you ever think of marigold gloves when you think of [name_f]Marigold[/name_f]?
@leafygreens thank you for answering it’s so interesting to hear from a Hispanic perspective and confirming what I thought about using a Spanish name is slightly odd when you don’t belong to a Latinx background. Also your positivity surrounding [name_f]Lilia[/name_f] & [name_f]Clara[/name_f] is great.
@OpheliaFlora thank you for answering I do agree that [name_f]Lilia[/name_f] & [name_f]Marisol[/name_f] feel very Spanish whereas [name_f]Lilia[/name_f] & [name_f]Clara[/name_f] feel more continental Europe which would be way more reflective off her background in comparison too [name_f]Marisol[/name_f].
Also thank you for the positivity surrounding [name_f]Clara[/name_f] I also think she’s elegant & international
