OH and I have been talking about names a lot recently. We plan to start ttc later this year. Anyway…we love the name [name]Lottie[/name] [name]Miriam[/name]. Not [name]Charlotte[/name], just [name]Lottie[/name]. Neither of us like [name]Charlotte[/name] nearly as much as [name]Lottie[/name]. I would like some feedback on this name as I know it is a bold move to use a nickname as a given name. However, names that follow the same pattern (consonant, vowel, double consonant, ie) as [name]Lottie[/name] ([name]Maggie[/name], [name]Mollie[/name], [name]Kellie[/name], [name]Callie[/name], [name]Hallie[/name], [name]Hattie[/name]) are all accepted as given names. We would call her [name]Lottie[/name] [name]Mim[/name]. What do ya’ll think? Thanks!!!
It’s a tough nickname given the common, colloquial word “lotta” [lot of.] I personally would hate to be named [name]Lottie[/name]-- as sweet as it is-- with nothing formal to fall back on professionally or to stave off teasing. I mean, imagine if your daughter were chubby?
I immediately thought of Phantom of the [name]Opera[/name]! Her nickname was [name]Lotte[/name], pronounced like [name]Lottie[/name]. “little [name]Lotte[/name], let her mind wander”! I’m a Phantom fan though so I love it! And as long as you do, go for it
In Phantom of the [name]Opera[/name], wasnt the name short for [name]Carlotta[/name]? I would go for another name where you could still get your nn of choice. I like [name]Mim[/name] as a mn its cute.
I love the name [name]Lottie[/name]. Like you, I would definately use [name]Lottie[/name] rather that the stuffy old [name]Charlotte[/name]. I also love [name]Mim[/name] for [name]Miriam[/name]. I hope you use [name]Lottie[/name] [name]Miriam[/name] it’s so adorable!
Jemama:
It was actually the nickname that [name]Raul[/name] gave to [name]Christine[/name] when they were childhood sweethearts. But it would be a good NN for [name]Carlotta[/name]!
I agree with [name]Blade[/name]. It could be a cute nickname but as a given name it feels entirely too cutesy and insubstantial.
I like it. [name]Lottie[/name] isn’t any more cutesy than [name]Lily[/name] or [name]Sophie[/name] to me.
Blech… I’m sorry but I absolutely hate it… Its so cute I could and might pukw
From a future thinking standpoint, i’d go with [name]Charlotte[/name] and just call her [name]Lottie[/name]. I just can’t see an adult in a job being taken seriously if her name is [name]Lottie[/name].
I don’t think using a nickname as a given name is such a bizarre idea-- in fact, I appreciate parents actually naming their children what they plan on calling them. Unfortunately, I don’t know if [name]Lottie[/name] is such a great representation of this nickname-usage.
For instance, [name]Lottie[/name] is going to go through that dreaded time in her life when she is going to face schoolyard bullies. Now, imagine, [name]Lottie[/name] is a little insecure about her weight during this time. Now, imagine, what kind of names those schoolyard bullies are going to come up with (Eat-a-lot [name]Lottie[/name], Lots of [name]Lottie[/name] etc.)
So, that being said, I really don’t know how useable [name]Lottie[/name] is.
As for [name]Miriam[/name], I’m just not a fan. It sounds very dated to me. I do like [name]Mim[/name], though. [name]How[/name] about using [name]Mim[/name] as a middle name with a more serious, traditional first name?
Here are some quick pairings I came up with. I mixed in some traditional (like [name]Charlotte[/name]), vintage (like [name]Miriam[/name]), and cutesy (like [name]Lottie[/name]) just so you could see how well it works with practically any naming style.
[name]Hazel[/name] [name]Mim[/name],
[name]Etta[/name] [name]Mim[/name],
[name]Elsie[/name] [name]Mim[/name],
[name]Beatrice[/name] [name]Mim[/name],
[name]Celia[/name] [name]Mim[/name],
[name]Cecilia[/name] [name]Mim[/name],
[name]Elizabeth[/name] [name]Mim[/name],
[name]Eleanor[/name] [name]Mim[/name],
[name]Addie[/name] [name]Mim[/name],
[name]Samantha[/name] [name]Mim[/name],
[name]Clover[/name] [name]Mim[/name],
[name]Freya[/name] [name]Mim[/name],
[name]Maisie[/name] [name]Mim[/name],
[name]Amelie[/name] [name]Mim[/name],
[name]Poppy[/name] [name]Mim[/name],
[name]Gemma[/name] [name]Mim[/name].
I think [name]Lily[/name] and [name]Sophie[/name] are probably bad comparisons though if you’re trying to debate (poor choice of words, sorry) against the idea that nicknames as full names are too cutesy. [name]Lily[/name] and [name]Sophie[/name] are both full given names in their own right (although frequently used as nicknames). [name]Lottie[/name] is not.
While I like the nn [name]Lottie[/name], I believe it is unsubstantial to be a full name.
Ugh! I thought I would get more support for [name]Lottie[/name] on here While I am not completely against using [name]Charlotte[/name] on the birth certificate, I love just [name]Lottie[/name]. I prefer everything about it over [name]Charlotte[/name]- the L initial, the ie ending and just the sound of it in general. I don’t want to name my daughter something that I don’t love. I also feel like any name could have the potential for teasing- if kids wanna tease, they’ll find a way. I also love the look of the Dutch [name]Lotte[/name] (pronounced the same as [name]Lottie[/name]), but I am concerned about pronounciation here in the US. Are there any other [name]Lottie[/name] lovers out there??
Yes, kids will be teased for anything that can be thought of but why make it easy for the people doing the teasing? [name]Lottie[/name] is a lovely nickname but it really isn’t well suited as a given name, especially in this day and age.
I really like [name]Lottie[/name]! It’s sweet and spunky. I looked it up and it was given to 411 girls in [name]England[/name] in 2011. If [name]Lottie[/name] [name]Miriam[/name] wishes to go by something less cute when she gets older, she has the perfect middle to do just that! If [name]Lottie[/name] is the name you love, then use that.
Also, about the teasing thing, if the full name is [name]Charlotte[/name] and she goes by [name]Lottie[/name] that will still be an issue. I’ve never heard anyone named/called [name]Lottie[/name] be teased by the way.
i think [name]Lottie[/name] is cute and could work on it own and there always going to be people who dont like what you name your daughter but as long as you and your partner love it then what does it matter what other people say… i think its better to use a name you love soo much then you another name just because of what people say…
i love [name]Lottie[/name]
I love it! I think it’s great as a stand-alone name, but I tend to love nick-namey-names and STRONGLY dislike frilly over-the-top names.
I just read your most recent post and I want to stress again that I Loooove the name [name]Lottie[/name] and think it is a fine choice!
My daughter is [name]Phoebe[/name] and my other favorites are [name]Heidi[/name], [name]Roxy[/name], [name]Daphne[/name], [name]Molly[/name], [name]Hattie[/name] and [name]Milly[/name]…so I tend to like names ending in ie/y sound. [name]Charlotte[/name] is so BLAH compared to just [name]Lottie[/name] [name]IMO[/name]. [name]Don[/name]'t worry what people on any naming site think. It’s great to use as a sounding board, but don’t let them totally sway you if you love the name! I think you are ahead of the trends. US is always behing [name]England[/name] in naming trends - so if its on the charts there now odds are the majority on naming sites will love it in a few years as it rises in popularity.
My cousin has a beautiful baby girl named just “[name]Lottie[/name]” and I think it’s adorable!
Unless I’m missing something, but I cant see why the teasing factor would be higher for this name than any others… Or it would be worse if she is chubby…? I’d be more worried about “[name]Charlotte[/name] the Harlot” than “eat a lot [name]Lottie[/name]”
I think it’s fab and you should go for it!
