[name_m]Hi[/name_m] berries!
A little background to my question: I was watching [name_m]Judge[/name_m] [name_f]Judy[/name_f] today with my mother, and one of the witnesses was named [name_f]Persephone[/name_f]. I would think that my mother would hate the name, because it’s out there, a myth name. But no, she pulls a ringer on me, “That’s a nice name, its cool and different.” Seriously, she likes [name_f]Persephone[/name_f] and hates [name_f]Delilah[/name_f]? But that’s besides the point. She likes that its Greek, because we’re Greek.
I have [name_f]Persephone[/name_f] on my character list, because I thought it would be too out there to name an actual child. But now I’m reconsidering. What do you think of the name [name_f]Persephone[/name_f]? Is it too out there? [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think its too grand for a child? [name_f]Do[/name_f] you know anyone with this name? All thoughts appreciated. Possible nickname options would be nice too.
Thanks!
I think although it looks very exotic, the sounds are reminiscent of the familiar name [name_f]Stephanie[/name_f]. It’s a gorgeous name, and I think it would be nice on a real child, maybe with a cute nickname. (My fave for [name_f]Persephone[/name_f] is penny). It has rich history, and is the name of the goddess of spring in Greek mythology. It’s stellar criteria for a name.
The only conflict I think would be pronunciation. But it only takes one correction for people to know how to correctly say it.
Overall, i think you should reconsider using it. It’s a brilliant name, and if your mother likes it, that a big plus for any namer.
[name_f]Persephone[/name_f] is (unlike what the last poster said (the goddess of spring is Eiar), the goddess of spring growth.
My daughter is [name_f]Persephone[/name_f]. Almost everyone has said it’s beautiful. They haven’t said it like “Oh, that’s pretty” but with a little sigh and a “ooo, that’s so beautiful”. The older people in my life, like over 50, had some problems pronouncing it. They would go “Perstephanie?” But they got it after once or twice. I obviously think a child can wear it. It’s no longer or more grandiose than [name_f]Isabella[/name_f]. And it has rich mythology and [name_f]Persephone[/name_f] is so strong and fierce. Aside from that, all the kids at the daycare where I worked, from 3-12, could say her name and loved it.
For nicknames, I’m using Sephy. There’s also [name_u]Percy[/name_u], Seph, Pony, Perie, [name_m]Ronie[/name_m]…
[name_f]LOVE[/name_f] [name_f]Persephone[/name_f]. I know one that goes by “[name_f]Effie[/name_f]”. My nephew (6) came home the other day and told his mom " I have a name for [name_f]Katie[/name_f]'s baby! It’s my favorite name…[name_f]Persephone[/name_f]!" I thought it was so cute that he suggested it, I wish it worked for us lol. Since it’s a unique name and I know one I feel weird about using it. Also, it sounds a little strange with our last name. SOOO much nn potential though. I say go for it
I love the mythology behind it, both positive and negative, and think the fact that it sounds relatively similar to other names makes it very wearable.
As previously stated, the plethora of nickname options also helps with the wearability in everyday life. My personal favorites are [name_u]Percy[/name_u], [name_f]Effie[/name_f], and Sephy.
I wish my fiancé would consider mythological names!
