I love it! It sounds very handsome and Scottish to me. My husband says everyone will associate it with [name]Malcolm[/name] X. What do YOU think of?
Thanks-
[name]Tara[/name]
I personally think [name]Malcolm[/name] X–another problem is if your husband doesn’t like it. But other people may have different opinions. I say it would make a lovely middle name.
I also think of it as being Scottish, strong, masculine. I love it! The other names I find similar are [name]Byron[/name] and [name]Conrad[/name] but I think [name]Malcolm[/name] is my favourite.
I agree that my very first thought when I hear the name [name]Malcolm[/name] is [name]Malcolm[/name] X. But, the thing is, we shouldn’t let things like that stop us from using the names we love! If you love it, I think you should go for it. It’s a super strong, handsome name, and your little boy is sure to bust that association in a millisecond
i ran the name by my 16 yr old sister and she said he liked it. when i asked here if it reminded her of [name]Malcolm[/name] X and she said, “who is that”. So good news is that children aren’t taught history. lol!! I really like the name. its most important that you and your husband like the name.
[name]LOVE[/name] the name [name]Malcolm[/name]. Definitely strong and Scottish. My husband has Scottish roots so this name is definitely high on our list. Also, as we’re Firefly fans, we think [name]Malcolm[/name] [name]Reynolds[/name] before [name]Malcolm[/name] X, but either way I don’t think that’s as negative an association as, say, using a name that always reminds you of someone you work with and can’t stand.
What about the TV show: [name]Malcolm[/name] in the Middle? Thats what I think of. Which isn’t a bad association at all. [name]Malcolm[/name] was a cute kid in the show.
I am sorry to say that I think it is an ugly name. “[name]Mal[/name]” is the French word for Bad a really good reason not to use this name.
If you like Scottish names why not use
[name]Lachlan[/name]
[name]Grant[/name]
[name]Scott[/name]
[name]Duncan[/name]
[name]Stuart[/name]
[name]Hamish[/name]
My last name is [name]Malcolm[/name], and I’ve never had anyone say anything about [name]Malcolm[/name] X to me. I’ve always liked having the name. I’d say if you like it, go for it.
(As for the beginning ‘mal,’ it doesn’t come from French, it comes from Scottish Gaelic–specifically ‘maol’, which refers to monks!)
What’s wrong with [name]Malcolm[/name] X? Lots of people actually use the name BECAUSE of that association.
[name]True[/name], jlm. On the one hand, he was a controversial figure due to some of his teachings and such. But on the other, one could do worse than give one’s child the same name as one of the most important Civil Rights activists in US history.
I love it! I actually picture a well educated strong professor type (which [name]Malcolm[/name] X also embodied, but he’s not the first thing I think of).
Thanks, jlm. I was thinking the same thing.
Yikes! Didn’t mean to start a debate…I have no problems with [name]Malcolm[/name] X. I was simply wondering if he is the first person to pop in one’s head when they hear the name.

I think it’s a great name: strong, but with a lovely gentle sound to it. And not too common either. I really wouldn’t worry about the [name]Malcolm[/name] X association, positive though I perceive it. For me, it isn’t the first thing that springs to mind.
I absolutely love it. It’s my favorite boys name and I don’t associate it with [name]Malcolm[/name] X.
Yay! I am so pleased with the positive feedback. I’m really in love with this name and if this bun in the oven is a boy…he’ll be [name]Malcolm[/name]
Any middle name ideas?
