My favorites are - [name_m]Peregrine[/name_m] (as a middle name), [name_m]Theodore[/name_m], [name_m]Xavier[/name_m], [name_m]Wolfgang[/name_m] (as a middle name but prefer [name_m]Wolf[/name_m], either are very handsome), [name_m]Amadeus[/name_m] (as a middle name), [name_m]Emrys[/name_m] (I also like [name_u]Emery[/name_u] and [name_u]Emerson[/name_u]), [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m], [name_m]Tobias[/name_m], and [name_m]Tobin[/name_m].
Ones I would actually use if I had a boy:
[name_m]Tobin[/name_m], [name_m]Tobiah[/name_m], [name_m]Tobias[/name_m], [name_m]Sebastian/name_m, [name_m]Theodore[/name_m]/[name_u]Theo[/name_u]
[name_m]Xavier[/name_m] would be a middle, as would [name_m]Amadeus[/name_m]
[name_m]Emrys[/name_m] I love the sound of, but it is too soft of a boy choice for me, it seems a bit feminine in my opinion.
Great names for the most part. My personal faves are [name_m]Emrys[/name_m], [name_m]Ozias[/name_m], [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m], and [name_m]Xavier[/name_m]. My least favorites are [name_m]Ptolemy[/name_m] and [name_m]Absalom[/name_m].
Very interesting list! Here are my comments…as you can probably tell I tend to like slightly less uncommon names, especially for boys…in my experience most guys with really unusual names kind of grit their teeth and wish their parents had named them something more “normal” whereas girls with similar names are more likely to embrace them. So this is from a different point of view which is hopefully helpful.
I love these and think they would make great first names:
[name_m]Theodore[/name_m]: Sounds sweet and intelligent yet manly.
[name_m]Xavier[/name_m]: Handsome and sophisticated.
[name_m]Albert[/name_m]: Strong and coolly old-fashioned.
[name_m]Alfred[/name_m]: [name_m]Even[/name_m] better than [name_m]Albert[/name_m]!
[name_m]Caspar[/name_m]: Might get some “friendly ghost” jokes but it’s cool, reasonably strong, and not too over-the-top.
[name_m]Sebastian[/name_m]: Cute yet strong, quirky, smart-sounding.
[name_m]Tobias[/name_m]: Distinguished full name with a cute, universally likable nickname ([name_u]Toby[/name_u]).
I wouldn’t use these as first names, but like them/see their appeal, and think a lot of them would make good middles:
[name_m]Peregrine[/name_m]: Seems a bit over-the-top as a first name, but it could work with a nickname. Would make a very cool middle.
[name_m]Inigo[/name_m]: Cool but would only seem attractive on a really attractive guy (like [name_m]Inigo[/name_m] Montoya). Would be better as a middle.
[name_m]Jago[/name_m]: Not my style but cool and potentially handsome.
[name_m]Leonidas[/name_m]: Very cool and handsome but would seem too tragic if he didn’t fit the image (tall, muscular, regal). I would prefer [name_m]Leo[/name_m], [name_m]Leon[/name_m], [name_m]Leonardo[/name_m], or [name_m]Leopold[/name_m].
[name_u]Constantine[/name_u]: Similar thoughts to [name_m]Leonidas[/name_m].
[name_m]Casimir[/name_m]: So handsome and regal…my only worry is that it wouldn’t suit an average-looking and/or unprepossessing guy.
[name_m]Wolfgang[/name_m]: [name_m]Eddie[/name_m] [name_u]Van[/name_u] Halen gets to name his son this because he’s a bona fide musical genius (and fortunately his son seems to be following in his footsteps). It sounds cool but wouldn’t work so well for average folks, at least not as a first name.
[name_m]Amadeus[/name_m]: Similar thoughts to [name_m]Wolfgang[/name_m] only it might work slightly better for the rest of us…the lack of “[name_m]Wolf[/name_m]” makes it seem less over-the-top.
[name_m]Absalom[/name_m]: Sounds handsome but I dimly remember some tragic Old Testament story about a king’s son (?) named this getting killed in some gory way.
[name_m]Zebedee[/name_m]: Kind of backwoodsy but could work in the right family.
[name_m]Tobin[/name_m]: OK but I prefer [name_m]Tobias[/name_m].
I don’t care for these even as middle names:
[name_m]Ptolemy[/name_m]: Doesn’t sound attractive and looks even less so written. This one needs to stay in the history books.
[name_m]Prosper[/name_m]: Makes me picture a plump, prosperous Puritan farmer. Not a fan.
[name_m]Aloysius[/name_m]: This always sounds like a joke name to me, like a kids’ book about [name_m]Aloysius[/name_m] [name_m]Fish[/name_m] or something.
[name_m]Iago[/name_m]: The negative association ([name_m]Othello[/name_m]) is too strong.
[name_m]Lazarus[/name_m]: Too many jokes about being raised from the dead.
[name_u]Valentine[/name_u]: [name_m]Way[/name_m] too associated with St. [name_u]Valentine[/name_u]'s [name_u]Day[/name_u] which in Western culture is too associated with hearts, flowers, and all things girly. I’d bet money he wouldn’t appreciate it.
[name_m]Ozias[/name_m]: Reminds me of Ozymandias, and most people probably wouldn’t be aware it was a real name. I’d prefer [name_m]Josiah[/name_m].
[name_m]Emrys[/name_m]: Sounds too feminine to me, probably because it reminds me of [name_f]Emerald[/name_f] + [name_f]Iris[/name_f].
[name_m]Tobiah[/name_m]: Sounds like it should be the feminine form of [name_m]Tobias[/name_m]…I prefer [name_m]Tobias[/name_m].
[name_m]Peregrine[/name_m] and [name_m]Aloysius[/name_m]. [name_m]Theodore[/name_m], [name_m]Alfred[/name_m], and [name_u]Valentine[/name_u]. [name_m]Emrys[/name_m] and [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m].
[name_m]Ptolemy[/name_m] is keen, but would be butchered in pronunciation.
[name_m]Peregrine[/name_m] (without the E, like [name_m]Peregrin[/name_m] Took), [name_m]Theodore[/name_m], [name_m]Xavier[/name_m], [name_m]Alfred[/name_m], [name_u]Valentine[/name_u], [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m], [name_m]Amadeus[/name_m], [name_m]Tobias[/name_m] and [name_m]Tobiah[/name_m] are all on my shortlist!!!
I like [name_m]Albert[/name_m], [name_m]Caspar[/name_m], [name_m]Tobin[/name_m], [name_m]Jago[/name_m], [name_m]Leonidas[/name_m] and [name_m]Ptolemy[/name_m].
Not so keen on [name_m]Prosper[/name_m], [name_m]Inigo[/name_m], [name_m]Aloysius[/name_m], [name_m]Iago[/name_m], [name_m]Lazarus[/name_m], [name_u]Constantine[/name_u], [name_m]Casimir[/name_m], [name_m]Wolfgang[/name_m], [name_m]Absalom[/name_m], [name_m]Ozias[/name_m], [name_m]Emrys[/name_m] and [name_m]Zebedee[/name_m].
I like [name_m]Prosper[/name_m] and [name_m]Emrys[/name_m] least.
I love [name_m]Theodore[/name_m], [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m], and [name_u]Valentine[/name_u].
I like [name_m]Ozias[/name_m] (especially with nn’s [name_m]Oz[/name_m] or [name_m]Ozzy[/name_m]), [name_m]Leonidas[/name_m], and [name_m]Wolfgang[/name_m].
The rest aren’t really my style.
Favourites:
[name_m]Theodore[/name_m], [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] & [name_m]Albert[/name_m] (but worry these are becoming a bit too ubiquitous!)
[name_m]Caspar[/name_m]
[name_m]Alfred[/name_m] (especially if he’s not often just [name_u]Alfie[/name_u]!)
[name_m]Emrys[/name_m]
[name_m]Ozias[/name_m]
[name_f]Love[/name_f] as middles:
[name_m]Ptolemy[/name_m] (only because of pronunciation problems, I adore Tolly as a nn)
[name_m]Peregrine[/name_m]
[name_m]Prosper[/name_m]
Like:
[name_m]Inigo[/name_m]
[name_m]Aloysius[/name_m] (would worry about pronunciation, but really like this)
[name_m]Iago[/name_m]
[name_m]Jago[/name_m]
[name_m]Leonidas[/name_m]
[name_u]Constantine[/name_u]
[name_m]Tobias[/name_m]/[name_m]Tobin[/name_m] (not as keen on [name_m]Tobiah[/name_m])
Not a huge fan of:
[name_m]Lazarus[/name_m]- biblical association puts me off
[name_m]Xavier[/name_m]- seems trendy to me, nowhere near as interesting as the names on your on your list already!
[name_u]Valentine[/name_u]- much prefer [name_f]Valentina[/name_f]
[name_m]Wolfgang[/name_m]/ [name_m]Amadeus[/name_m]- too [name_m]Mozart[/name_m]
[name_m]Absalom[/name_m], [name_m]Casimir[/name_m], [name_m]Zebedee[/name_m]- just don’t sound great to my ears
