What do you think of these names?

I’m currently writing a novel about a girl who experiences a different mental illness or problem every day, and her search for why this is happening to her. (For example, she’s a kleptomaniac one day and an arachnaphobe the next, as well as some more unusual issues and some made up ones.)

I have a full group of characters with names picked out, and I really like a lot of them but I’m still open to suggestions for changes, especially in regard to the last names:

Landing Mississippi Rosarion. (MC) Her parents met in Landing, Mississippi and decided to name their daughter after the place (which is made up, by the way). I’m attached to the name Landing and won’t change that, but I’m unsure about the last name and am open to new ideas for that. She’s very blunt and to-the-point, and she’s unpredictable as far as dress and attitude. She’s very self-sufficient and doesn’t need or want help from others.

[name_m]Atlas[/name_m] Reede: seems like a potential love interest but is really just a friend (I never like having the love interest be the obvious person). I like the name [name_m]Atlas[/name_m] and it fits his personality, but I’m looking for options for other last names. Reede is fine, but other options would be appreciated. He does what he thinks is right most of the time, although he is pretty cunning and isn’t above lying if it’s for a good cause. He’s very attractive, smart, and funny, but he doesn’t pay attention to any of the many admirers that he picks up due to this charisma.

[name_f]Ivy[/name_f] nn Vy: Landing’s best friend and the only person who knows about her one-a-day insanity. They tell each other everything and interact as most best friends do. [name_f]Ivy[/name_f] looks very punk rock but is really a softie with a big heart. I’m looking for possible last names here, as well as opinions on the name itself.

[name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] Rosarion: Landing’s mother, a woman who used to be extremely fun-loving and spur-of-the-moment who, after the death of her husband, became depressed and fairly absent. Although she improves and becomes more motherly again, she never really returns to the personality she had before. I’m looking for any name suggestions you have here. I want something that could be considered kind of edgy or could have a cooler nickname, but the name itself can also be seen as very adult. Nothing too unusual here. [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] doesn’t fit the character to me, but I can’t think of anything that would work better.

Thank you so much in advance! I’m really just looking for your opinions and suggestions. I’m very attached to some of my characters’ names, but if you have any suggestions for those characters, that’s fine too. I’m always open to ideas!

I’m in love with [name_m]Atlas[/name_m] Reede. It sounds so intelligent and at the same time badass.

I think that [name_f]Ivy[/name_f]'s nickname should be spelled Vee just to avoid confusion, since I would pronounce Vy to rhyme with eye, unless that was what you were going for.

I think [name_m]Atlas[/name_m] Reede is a bit too close to [name_m]Atlas[/name_m] Shrugged. That was my first thought.

Same with the last name Rosarion. Reminds me of Yossarian from Catch-22.

Unless you’re purposely going for a modern classic lit vibe to your names.

[name_m]Atlas[/name_m] Reede is a lovely name, but it also feels very literal (like [name_u]Piano[/name_u] Play or Notebook Write). Maybe [name_m]Atlas[/name_m] [name_u]Meade[/name_u] or [name_m]Atlas[/name_m] [name_m]Redman[/name_m] or [name_m]Atlas[/name_m] Beade.

[name_f]Ivy[/name_f] seems to fit the character and is a nice name. You could continue the theme with something like [name_f]Ivy[/name_f] Marks, [name_f]Ivy[/name_f] Crowne, [name_f]Ivy[/name_f] [name_m]Winston[/name_m]. ( plays off of Brave [name_m]New[/name_m] World & 1984 characters)

[name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] feels very young to me because it’s only been used much since the 90’s, before that it was off the charts since the early 50’s. So unless the mom is over 60 or under 25 it would be super uncommon.

[name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] has a very soft, feminine feel to it, but it does have [name_u]Izzy[/name_u] or [name_f]Belle[/name_f].
Here’s a few others that (to me) have a feminine feel and a nickname:
[name_f]Antoinette[/name_f] ([name_f]Toni[/name_f]/[name_f]Netta[/name_f])
[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] ([name_f]Char[/name_f]/[name_u]Charlie[/name_u]/[name_f]Lottie[/name_f])
[name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] ([name_f]Neve[/name_f]/[name_f]Eve[/name_f])
[name_f]Susannah[/name_f] ([name_f]Zana[/name_f])
[name_f]Veronica[/name_f] ([name_u]Ronnie[/name_u])
[name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] ([name_u]Romy[/name_u])
[name_f]Samantha[/name_f] ([name_u]Sammy[/name_u]/[name_u]Sam[/name_u])

I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] YOUR NAMES! Oh gosh, I love [name_m]Atlas[/name_m] so much.

But here’s some suggestions if you feel iffy about the other names:

Landing: this name is really simple and plain, more of a “no comment” name. It sounds realistic as a town name, so. Some similar (?) ish names that come to mind are [name_f]Ingrid[/name_f], [name_u]Ridley[/name_u], and [name_f]April[/name_f].

[name_m]Atlas[/name_m]: love this name, haha. I wouldn’t suggest you change this one.

[name_f]Ivy[/name_f]: I like it! Seems like it suits the character. Some other names that come to mind are [name_f]Eliza[/name_f], [name_f]Lizzie[/name_f], [name_f]Ruth[/name_f], and [name_f]Katrina[/name_f].

[name_f]Isabelle[/name_f]: iffy name again for me. Sweet and pretty and kinda flimsy. Some other suggestions include [name_u]Leslie[/name_u], [name_f]Melanie[/name_f], [name_f]Juliana[/name_f]/[name_u]Julie[/name_u]/[name_f]Juliet[/name_f]/[name_u]Julie[/name_u], and [name_f]Catherine[/name_f].

Good luck on your novel!

I also love [name_m]Atlas[/name_m] Reede. I also agree that [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] is a bit too modern. If you’re attached to the name, I would use something more reserved like [name_f]Isabel[/name_f] or [name_f]Isobel[/name_f].
I don’t have any objections to the last name Rosarion. It’s quite lovely with Landing, and I think you can only get away with Landing Mississippi Rosarion in a story
Plot twist: [name_m]Atlas[/name_m] and [name_f]Ivy[/name_f] are siblings. That way you have [name_f]Ivy[/name_f] Reede. Has options for aittke filler drama like [name_m]Atlas[/name_m] and [name_f]Ivy[/name_f] learning to share Landing, or Landing quickly ending small bicker sessions.

Thank you to everyone who had suggestions!

So far, I’ve decided based on people’s reactions that I should keep [name_m]Atlas[/name_m] Reede. I also think I’m going to change the mother’s name to either [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] or [name_f]Juliana[/name_f], so thank you to those of you who suggested those names!

Also, in reply to some other things that were brought up:

I also pronounce Vy like it rhymes with eye, even though it’s a nickname for [name_f]Ivy[/name_f]. Vy or Vee is fine with me, either way people pronounce it in their own heads is cool.

I’m attached to the name Landing and I don’t plan to change it.

While it would be interesting to have [name_m]Atlas[/name_m] and [name_f]Ivy[/name_f] be brother and sister, it wouldn’t work with the plot outline that I have so far, although I do like some of the things that idea would have introduced to the story!

Thanks again to all of you who contributed!
