What do you think of this name?

My sister is in her late 20s and now pregnant. Her husband’s surname is Higgs.
So my sister always wanted to call her daughter [name]Gilly[/name]. But then the whole Abercrombie, [name]Gilly[/name] Hicks thing happened.
[name]Do[/name] you think she can still call her daughter [name]Gilly[/name] even though her full name will be [name]Gilly[/name] Higgs?

It’s pronounced [name]Gilly[/name] with a G like in go…just [name]Gilly[/name], no [name]Jilly[/name].

Why doesn’t she name her [name]Gillian[/name] and give her the nn [name]Gilly[/name]? [name]Gilly[/name] is kind of childish and the surname Higgs only reinforces it.

[name]Gilly[/name] sounds silly. And like an adjective describing something with gills. “[name]Gee[/name], this shark fin soup is awfully gilly…”

Agree with previous posters

I’d never heard of [name]Gilly[/name] Hicks before, but after I read [name]Gilly[/name] I immediately pictured [name]Kristen[/name] Wiig dressed up as [name]Gilly[/name] in that on [name]Saturday[/name] [name]Night[/name] Live skit that she did, and now I can’t get that image out of my head.

I think that the suggestion of naming her [name]Gillian[/name] is fantastic. Your sister can still call her [name]Gilly[/name], but she has [name]Gillian[/name] to fall back on, and being able to go by [name]Gillian[/name] Higgs rather than [name]Gilly[/name] Higgs would help to differentiate herself more from [name]Gilly[/name] Hicks.

I personally think [name]Gilly[/name] is awful and [name]Gilly[/name] Higgs sounds very cartoonish. Reminds me of [name]Pippi[/name] Longstocking

[name]Gilly[/name] is bleh, and [name]Gilly[/name] Higgs is awful. It sounds like a silly child’s book character.

[name]Gillian[/name] Higgs is better, but it still sounds child’s book character like.
Like [name]Junie[/name] B. Jonesish.

I think it’s okay, very cute, but would it grow with her? I rarely invoke that, but [name]Gilly[/name] is just better on a little girl I think. What about [name]Gilda[/name]? It’s closer to the “gill” sound than [name]Gillian[/name], which actually has a J-sounding beginning, and [name]Gilly[/name] is an easy nickname.

FYI also [name]Gilly[/name] is a minor character in the Song of Ice and [name]Fire[/name] series (Game of Thrones), and they said her name came from the gillyflower, which apparently is a real flower, so it’s got the floral thing going for it if she does use it.

I agree with nono, the first thing that came to mind was [name]Kristen[/name] Wig on SNL. If you’ve seen the skit, you can see why the name has a tough image to get rid of.
The second was [name]Gilly[/name] from ASOIAF, as already mentioned by betsy buttercup.
