What do you think of this?

What do you think of first names similar to the last name. For instance: [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] [name_m]Thompson[/name_m], [name_m]Anders[/name_m] [name_m]Anderson[/name_m], [name_m]Jeff[/name_m] [name_m]Jefferson[/name_m], [name_u]James[/name_u] [name_u]Jameson[/name_u] etc? A friend is having a baby and her favorite boy name is like the last name, but she wonders if people think it’s weird. So what do you think?

She plans not to use middle name, and she prefers not to share her last name on the internet but if you think it’s necessary to figure out wether the name works or not she said it’s ok to post it

I find it boring. Like, could you really not think of anything else?

I agree with the previous poster, it just seems quite unoriginal.
Though I guess it’d feel less so if she used a middle name. Has she considered the possibility of giving him a different first name and calling him by his middle name (the one that sounds like his surname)?

I think it depends on the name a little bit, but probably a bit much regardless. Some may work better than others though. I do know a [name_m]William[/name_m] [name_m]Williams[/name_m], which I always laughed about (he went by his middle though). But I think something like [name_m]Wilson[/name_m] [name_m]Williams[/name_m] wouldn’t be as bad, since it’s at least a little different.

Also, the main character from [name_m]How[/name_m] To Lose A [name_m]Guy[/name_m] in 10 Days is [name_u]Andy[/name_u] [name_m]Anderson[/name_m].

Haha as a name nerd I totally agree with you. It’s just my friend who really like that name and wanted me to ask here if it was acceptable

@emmievis I’m not sure, but thanks I’ll totally suggest it

Its a bit gimmicky.

I think passable if the similar name is more of a nn, and there is a middle name…

examples:
[name_m]Arthur[/name_m] [name_m]Hendrix[/name_m] [name_m]Anderson[/name_m] = [name_m]Artie[/name_m] [name_m]Anderson[/name_m]
[name_m]Andrew[/name_m] [name_m]Maxwell[/name_m] [name_m]Anderson[/name_m] = [name_u]Andy[/name_u] [name_m]Anderson[/name_m]
[name_m]Eben[/name_m] [name_m]Louis[/name_m] [name_m]Benson[/name_m] = [name_m]Benny[/name_m] [name_m]Benson[/name_m]
[name_u]Micah[/name_u] [name_m]George[/name_m] [name_m]Maxwell[/name_m] = [name_m]Mac[/name_m] [name_m]Maxwell[/name_m]

… actually really hard to come up with examples that don’t make me cringe… I assume the names you suggest happen by accident (parents didn’t fully think it out), or lack of creativity, or a (perhaps mean) joke to play on your offspring.

Honestly, it’s one of my biggest naming peeves. I’ve known a few people who married into having the same (or similar) surname as their first, and that alone seems like an unfortunate development, but to knowingly give such a redundant name to a child makes no sense to me, given how many options there are. I find it tacky and endlessly frustrating, and I would hate to have been the bearer of such a name.

In all honesty, I think it’s really unimaginative and silly sounding. They’re the sort of names I can imagine getting some eye rolls (or at least my friends would).

It seems tacky and boring. It’ll just end up with the kid being made fun of…

I really hate it but that’s because I’ve known a couple of people with names like this and the one kid, [name_m]Patrick[/name_m] [name_m]Fitzpatrick[/name_m], got made fun of a lot for it.

It does seem like they couldn’t be bothered to put any effort into thinking of a name. Personally, I think it’s stupid.

I have to agree with previous posters. It sounds dumb and like the parents didn’t bother putting any thought into the name at all.

I agree with all of the previous posters.

I wouldnt like it. I hate the singer [name_m]Phillip[/name_m] [name_m]Phillips[/name_m] because of that exact reason. Its silly and cringy.

I know someone who did this and I thought it was straight up dumb. It was her married name so maybe she didnt plan her fave baby name to be like that or they could only agree on that but I thought it sounded ridiculous personally. Theres so many gorgeous names to use. However I do think to each their own if it doesn’t bother them…but it will get said a lot. If I knew her better I would’ve advised against it and normally I dont comment directly about names.
