I remember when I was looking for a name for my second son in 2013, [name_m]Abram[/name_m] (nn [name_m]Bram[/name_m]) was hot in the NB world. Now I rarely see it suggested or mentioned and I notice that it’s fallen a few spots on the SSA charts. Was it a trend that just didn’t catch on or am I missing something? We have chosen it as the name for our third son, and I’m just curious. We plan on using [name_m]Abe[/name_m] as a nickname as opposed to [name_m]Bram[/name_m], though.
[name_m]Abram[/name_m] is a fine name, very charming and strong. I don’t think there is anything wrong with it, but it does have a rather old-fashioned air. That may be why it isn’t as popular as some other more “trendy” names.
I think it is a good choice for you, though. Goes very nicely with your other boys names.
No idea what happened, but I love [name_m]Abram[/name_m]!
Though [name_m]Abram[/name_m] did recently drop in rank it was actually used more often according to SSA information. As long as [name_m]Abraham[/name_m] is growing in popularity so will [name_m]Abram[/name_m] to a lesser extent. Surprisingly [name_m]Bram[/name_m] is holding pretty steady at around 50 uses per year.
Here at NB I think we have a tendency to burn ourselves out when it comes to certain names. For a while [name_m]Abram[/name_m] nn [name_m]Bram[/name_m] hit that sweet spot, but we soon had our fill. It doesn’t mean we now dislike the name, we’ve just become familiar with it and have sought out new names to discuss.
I think [name_m]Abram[/name_m] is a fantastic name–it’s on my list as well. [name_m]Abe[/name_m] is an adorable nickname!
I really like the name [name_m]Abram[/name_m] and I know one who is about 8 now. I think one reason that it has lost favor, especially here on Nameberry, is that it is a name that has fairly strong religious tones/sources. Something like [name_m]Samuel[/name_m], another biblical name, has become so commonplace that people don’t usually seem to think of that. Names like [name_m]Silas[/name_m] fit into the “grandpa chic” trend…but [name_m]Abram[/name_m] doesn’t seem to fit in that at all, and its ties are the only reason I can come up with that makes sense to me. I do agree with @otri about name burn out though. It’s actually a brilliant point to bring up. [name_f]Remember[/name_f] the [name_f]Clementine[/name_f] and [name_u]Wren[/name_u] hype? Whenever someone would ask for name suggestions, those would get tossed around more than a salad…people posted constantly about them. Now you don’t see nearly as many posts about those names…they’ve fizzled out and people have moved on. I don’t remember [name_m]Abram[/name_m] ever being popular on those levels here, but I think it’s likely it was another has-been
Thanks everyone for weighing in! I was genuinely curious. We are not religious (which is funny because we have a [name_m]Silas[/name_m] and a soon-to-be [name_m]Abram[/name_m]), but I have loved the name since I first heard it on these forums years ago. I’m glad most of you still think it’s a good name and that it fits with our sibset! I just wanted to make sure I wasn’t missing some fatal flaw.
