I’m always here for a @Greyblue thread, because you comment on literally every post ever, so you deserve all the love when it’s your turn!!
[name_u]Cadence[/name_u] [name_f]Aurora[/name_f]
[name_f]My[/name_f] first association with [name_u]Cadence[/name_u] is the princess of the [name_f]Crystal[/name_f] Empire from [name_f]My[/name_f] [name_m]Little[/name_m] Pony: Friendship is [name_u]Magic[/name_u] (which I’ve seen a billion times by now because the theme song is my daughter’s favorite thing in the entire world). She’s a lovely character, gentle, sweet, and brave. I get swirls of pink and pale yellow, as well as images of treble clefs and eighth notes, probably due to the musical terminology. It feels calm, poised, and sedate to me, but with a warm twinkle on the inside.
[name_f]Aurora[/name_f] gives me different imagery depending on the other names in the combo. Sometimes it’s dawn, full of pink and gold clouds and other sunrise colors. Other times it’s the northern lights, swirls of turquoise and seafoam against a midnight blue sky. In this combo, I’m getting the former, probably because [name_u]Cadence[/name_u] feels warm and daylit to me.
[name_u]Cassidy[/name_u] [name_f]Violet[/name_f]
[name_f]My[/name_f] first association with [name_u]Cassidy[/name_u] is always [name_m]Butch[/name_m] [name_u]Cassidy[/name_u] and the [name_u]Sundance[/name_u] Kid, because that’s my dad’s favorite movie. Unfortunately, a close second is the case of [name_u]Cassidy[/name_u] Rainwater, although it may pass fairly quickly from public consciousness. At any rate, [name_u]Cassidy[/name_u] gives me very tomboyish, country girl vibes, lots of soft flannel shirts, deeply tanned skin, straw hats, and dusty, lived-in cowboy boots. I get tawny colors, like bronze, sun-kissed chestnut, and palomino. It feels spunky, earthy, frank, and a bit rakish.
[name_f]Violet[/name_f], by contrast, has a very sweet, quiet, shy, and gentle vibe - a wallflower, but not in a derogatory way. I think of [name_f]Violet[/name_f] [name_u]Alden[/name_u] from The Boxcar Children, and to a lesser extent, [name_f]Violet[/name_f] [name_m]Harmon[/name_m] from American Horror [name_u]Story[/name_u]: Murder House. I get a very soft, dusty purple from this name, images of dainty white lace and delicate floral perfume in exquisite glass bottles. Together, I feel like [name_f]Violet[/name_f] softens the blunter edges of [name_u]Cassidy[/name_u], while [name_u]Cassidy[/name_u] brings out a fresher, spunkier version of [name_f]Violet[/name_f].
[name_u]Kerrigan[/name_u] [name_f]Poppy[/name_f]
I don’t have any immediate associations with the name [name_u]Kerrigan[/name_u], but it feels fully Irish to me. I’m getting wild red curls, wide white toothy grins, penny whistles, and the colors copper and kelly green. It gives me boyish, mischievous vibes.
[name_f]My[/name_f] first association with [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] is the bright flowers; paradoxically, while poppies actually have powerful sedative properties (being the source of opium), the name itself feels very energetic to me. [name_f]My[/name_f] second association is the main character from the Trolls movie, who is very extroverted, enthusiastic, and relentlessly optimistic. I get the image of a preschooler with golden curls, bouncing up and down and clapping their hands excitedly. Overall, this combo feels like a person with tons of energy.
[name_f]Tamar[/name_f] [name_u]Louise[/name_u]
I absolutely adore the name [name_f]Tamar[/name_f] - it’s one of the few Biblical names I would still use after having left the faith. [name_f]My[/name_f] first association is with the Old Testament character who was left to fend for herself by her father-in-law after being widowed twice over, so she tricked him into sleeping with her and then blackmailed him to give her what she was owed. Not the most wholesome namesake, but so subversive and bad@ss, which is what I loved about her! As a name, [name_f]Tamar[/name_f] feels sleek, serpentine, and a little dangerous. I picture one of those femme fatales from a detective noir film who wears furs and uses a cigarette holder. I get angular [name_f]Cleopatra[/name_f] haircuts, sharp winged eyeliner; glittering black and swirls of gold.
[name_u]Louise[/name_u], by contrast, feels very traditional to me, even a bit stodgy, and the juxtaposition is a little jarring. For some reason, the image that comes to mind is one of those vintage tweed blazers with the enormous shoulder pads in a camel and red plaid. [name_f]My[/name_f] primary associations with [name_u]Louise[/name_u] are the film [name_f]Thelma[/name_f] and [name_u]Louise[/name_u] (the titular duo are affectionately known in my circles as “the queer [name_f]Bonnie[/name_f] and Clyde”) and the youngest [name_m]Belcher[/name_m] child in the animated comedy Bob’s Burgers. Both of these characters helped me appreciate the name more.
I have very mixed feelings about this combo, because I adore [name_f]Tamar[/name_f] so much, while [name_u]Louise[/name_u] is not my cup of tea. I think she would shine better next to something that can lean into the vintage vibe and make it feel cool. For example, just brainstorming with your other names - [name_f]Tamar[/name_f] [name_f]Veronica[/name_f] or [name_f]Lydia[/name_f] Tamar; [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] [name_u]Louise[/name_u] or [name_u]Louise[/name_u] [name_f]Amelie[/name_f].
[name_f]Lydia[/name_f] [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f]
[name_f]My[/name_f] primary association with this name is the antagonist, and a rather pitiful character, in an obscure [name_f]Grace[/name_f] [name_u]Livingston[/name_u] [name_m]Hill[/name_m] novel, The Obsession of [name_f]Victoria[/name_f] [name_u]Gracen[/name_u]. Her name was [name_f]Lydia[/name_f] Bypath, and the children in the novel called her “Bydia Pylath,” so that’s the first thing I hear in my head when I see the name. That being said, [name_f]Lydia[/name_f] also gives me stately ancient Greco-Roman vibes. I get beautiful statuary, peplos and himations, laurel wreaths, and coils of chestnut streaked with gold.
I have a huge soft spot for the name [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f], in part because my primary association is one of the Halliwell witch sisters from Charmed, played by [name_f]Alyssa[/name_f] [name_u]Milano[/name_u]. She is passionate, opinionated, and feisty, but also warm, loyal, and loving. The show and the character were a big part of my childhood, and definitely influenced my feelings towards the name. I also love the meaning, the associations with the moon, and the numerous literary and mythological connections. This is another one of those names that tends to change colors based on the other names in the combo - sometimes red, sometimes silver, sometimes purple. In this case, it’s purple, lots of billowy layers of lavender and violet.
Overall, this combo feels like someone who would be very at home in ancient Greece, maybe a painter, a sculptor, or even a senator, someone who leaves offerings at Artemis’s temple of the moon.
[name_u]Joni[/name_u] [name_u]Rae[/name_u]
[name_f]My[/name_f] strongest association with [name_u]Joni[/name_u] is [name_u]Joni[/name_u] Eareckson [name_f]Tada[/name_f], an evangelical author, radio host, motivational speaker, and disability activist. She was well-known in the religious circles I grew up in. Other than that connection, I really don’t get any strong vibes, colors, or imagery from this name, aside from the vague memory of some of Eareckson Tada’s paintings.
I don’t have any strong associations with the name [name_u]Rae[/name_u] either. But while these two individually don’t spark much, together as a combo, I get strong 90s vibes - roller skates and jelly sandals, glitter lip gloss and color block windbreakers, Clueless and The Babysitter’s Club. I also feel like a [name_u]Joni[/name_u] [name_u]Rae[/name_u] would be one of those girls absolutely obsessed with horses.
[name_f]Cressida[/name_f] [name_u]Hero[/name_u]
[name_f]Cressida[/name_f] feels very golden, warm, sunny, and floral to me, much like the names in my Sweet [name_f]Summer[/name_f] Child aesthetic. I don’t have any immediate associations with the name, but I get imagery of oversized mustard sweaters, brown lace-up boots with oodles of tiny buttons, and copious cups of chamomile tea.
[name_f]My[/name_f] first association with [name_u]Hero[/name_u] is the show Heroes, as well one of the primary characters, the possibly-ironically-named [name_m]Hiro[/name_m] Nakamura. That character brings a sense of innocence and infectious optimism to the name, which I think makes it more approachable. It’s also one of those larger-than-life names that feels epic, mythical, ancient and futuristic at the same time, and a little overwhelming. I get imagery of towering statues of mythical titans, superheros in colorful capes, and gas giants swirling in the vastness of space.
I think this combo works well together. [name_f]Cressida[/name_f] brings a warmth and gentleness to [name_u]Hero[/name_u], while [name_u]Hero[/name_u] makes [name_f]Cressida[/name_f] feel powerful and expansive.
[name_f]Leandra[/name_f] [name_f]Nour[/name_f]
[name_f]Leandra[/name_f], like many of the [name_f]Lea[/name_f]- and [name_u]Leo[/name_u]- names, immediately puts me in mind of lions. It feels warm and golden, powerful, but laconic, like a lioness curled up in the sun for a nap.
If I’m being totally honest, I have a negative reaction to [name_f]Nour[/name_f], especially given that it’s a variant of [name_u]Noor[/name_u], which I absolutely love. [name_u]Noor[/name_u] gives me images of horses galloping across rolling hills in the moonlight, with silver reflecting off their manes. By contrast, [name_f]Nour[/name_f] gives me a neon yellow, almost the color of a highlighter, and the sharp smell of bitter lemons. This might be because of the visual similarity to the word “sour,” even though I know the pronunciation is the same as [name_u]Noor[/name_u]. I do adore Leandra’s golden vibes, and I understand if [name_u]Noor[/name_u] is too silvery to feel right next to it. I just think I would avoid the [name_f]Nour[/name_f] spelling and go with a different name altogether if [name_u]Noor[/name_u] isn’t your taste. But I also know that not everyone has my weird synesthesia brain! So.
[name_f]Sophie[/name_f] [name_f]Victoria[/name_f]
[name_f]Sophie[/name_f] is one of those names that is so ubiquitous nowadays that I don’t have many standout associations beyond Sophie’s Choice, and that mainly because of the idiom - I have not watched the film or read the book. I did think of [name_f]Sofia[/name_f] the First, but that’s probably because I used to live with a kiddo who watched it incessantly; in my mind [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] and [name_f]Sofia[/name_f] feel different. [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] feels gentle, sweet, and innocent, all wide eyes and small smiles.
[name_f]My[/name_f] closest association with [name_f]Victoria[/name_f], besides a girl I knew in high school, is the [name_f]Queen[/name_f]. This is a very versatile name that can feel classic and stately or vivacious and full of life. For some reason, I always picture someone very tall, with long coltish legs. I also get images of laurel wreaths and red velvet.
I think the combo of [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] [name_f]Victoria[/name_f] is lovely, because [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] brings out Victoria’s softer side, and [name_f]Victoria[/name_f] gives [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] a little strength. I picture a sweet, curious girl who loves tea parties with her stuffed animals.
[name_f]Chloe[/name_f] [name_f]Renee[/name_f]
I don’t have any immediate associations with the name [name_f]Chloe[/name_f], but it has a really strong presence in my mind synesthesia-wise - I get a beautiful spring green, soft and delicate, like the color of new leaves, and time-lapse imagery of flowers opening (specifically calla lilies for some reason). It feels very fresh and sweet and gentle.
I also don’t have any particular associations with [name_f]Renee[/name_f], aside from it being a common middle name along my classmates - all late 80s / early 90s kids. It feels a bit dated to me, but the sound is pretty and the meaning is beautiful. I don’t get any colors and only one oddly specific image - brunette hair in a “mom bob” - shorter in the back and longer in the front. I don’t love [name_f]Renee[/name_f], but I think it flows well as a middle for [name_f]Chloe[/name_f], and [name_f]Chloe[/name_f] feels so fresh that it emphasizes the movement and lilt of [name_f]Renee[/name_f].
[name_f]Amelie[/name_f] [name_f]Veronica[/name_f] [name_f]Lois[/name_f]
[name_f]My[/name_f] first association with [name_f]Amelie[/name_f] is the film by the same name, all about an eccentric, lonely Parisian girl with a vivid imagination, who elaborately meddles in the lives of those around her in order to bring them happiness. To me, this name feels whimsical, mischievous, and a little delicate (and I vastly prefer it to Amelia). I get images of croissants and lattes thick with foam, tiny dollhouses (the warm and sunny sort rather than the creepy kind), yellow trenchcoats and red umbrellas, and a shadowbox on the wall displaying a collection of intricate teaspoons.
I immediately associate [name_f]Veronica[/name_f] with the character from [name_m]Archie[/name_m], and subsequently Riverdale. She feels sleek, sophisticated, a little haughty; one of those people who presents as merely a beauty, but who has some wicked sharp brains underneath. It also feels like a moneyed name. I get images of Coach bags, pearl necklaces, Louboutin heels, enormous sunglasses, and faux fur coats so luxe that you can’t tell they’re not real fur.
As for [name_f]Lois[/name_f], I immediately associate the name with [name_f]Lois[/name_f] [name_f]Gladys[/name_f] Leppard, late author of the [name_f]Mandie[/name_f] mystery series. She wrote the first book when she was only 11 years old, which likely influences the bookish vibes I get from the name. I picture horn-rimmed glasses on a beaded chain, old-fashioned typewriters, Scrabble tiles, and a pot of tea in a crocheted cozy.
[name_f]Amelie[/name_f] + [name_f]Veronica[/name_f] feel independent and precocious, like a rich little [name_u]French[/name_u] girl escaping her au pair to romp about the city. [name_f]Veronica[/name_f] + [name_f]Lois[/name_f] feel like an eccentric famous author, mysterious, reclusive, and a little pretentious. [name_f]Amelie[/name_f] + [name_f]Lois[/name_f] feel shy and whimsical and anachronistic, like an introverted child with a strong sense of aesthetic, who surrounds herself with vintage items because she idealizes living in a bygone era. I’m not sure what the three names add up to together.
Sorry this took me so long! I wanted to be thorough and do each combo, and just wasn’t able to do them all in one sitting with a 7 month old in the house
