Wondering since the Hipster names was posted if they have changed much? Any suggestions? I’m not stating I am hipster-though I am fond of some of the boys names! But I am interested in what is going on with the girls names. Thank you!
I think crusty-but-cool to the point that it almost feels ironic on a child…
[name]Winona[/name]
[name]Edna[/name]
[name]Irene[/name]
[name]Jean[/name]
Or vaguely ethnic but familiar/simple
[name]Veda[/name]
[name]Ines[/name]
[name]Paloma[/name]
[name]Yulia[/name]
Or unique & naturey
[name]Fern[/name]
[name]Azalea[/name]
[name]Ginger[/name]
[name]River[/name]
I’ve also met several girls named [name]Fiona[/name], 2 named [name]Cara[/name], many simply named kids like [name]Jane[/name], [name]Nina[/name], [name]Kira[/name]…like short &sweet & not at all out-there named kids with Hipster parents.
I’m in [name]Brooklyn[/name] btw so hipsters abound
Oh Taz! We’re both in [name]Brooklyn[/name], so I value your opinion here. [name]Do[/name] you really think [name]Ginger[/name] is a hipster name? It’s one of my absolute favorites. I have a real love for the plant, and a lifelong obsession with [name]Fred[/name] Astaire and [name]Ginger[/name] [name]Rogers[/name]. I’ve heard lots of people talk about what an ugly name it is, but I still love it. The other day I went into a fish shop on [name]Court[/name] St and the owner’s daughter is named [name]Ginger[/name]! I had a little flutter of joy. But I’d hate if it were the hipster name of the moment.
I heard [name]Ana[/name]ïs twice recently in B-burg. It has a pretty sound, but naming your kid after an author of bisexual erotica is pretty hip(STER!) Ditto [name]Djuna[/name].
I love [name]Enid[/name], which falls into the same clunky-cool category as [name]Edna[/name] (also lovely to say) but I fear it’s a hipster name unless you’re in the UK.
I think [name]Ezra[/name] on a girl could be picked up by the black-lacquer glasses and ironic mullet set.
Another [name]Brooklyn[/name] [name]Berry[/name]!
I think [name]Ginger[/name] is a great name! But my list when I was pregnant definitely included some hipstery choices so maybe I’m not the one to ask! I love [name]Edna[/name] & [name]Enid[/name]! I love [name]Nancy[/name] on a kid! And [name]Annette[/name]. I’m a 20 something who lives in [name]Brooklyn[/name] so it is what it is.
2 names that have surprised me are [name]Myrtle[/name] & [name]Willoughby[/name]…2 separate families but it was kinda weird to hear kids called after streets right in the vicinity I’m assuming they lived in!
Thanks guys! [name]Just[/name] a wee bump to see if there are any other ideas…I am due in 11 days…We have three names at present. But…Always looking!

My best friend is kind of a hipster, but I think her favorite names are ones she’s liked for a long time and don’t really play into what’s hip right now. Although several years ago she named her dog [name]Linus[/name] and I saw that in the article on hipster names. I told her she used it before it was “in” and is a trend-setter. She had a coworker who he and his wife were also pretty hip and they named their baby [name]Tobias[/name] last year. I figure when it comes to hipster names, anything used more than a year or two ago is already old news.
I just realized this is in the girl’s name section and both those were boy names. Sorry!
A hipster name is a name that is obscure or rarely heard of on children these days and/or is ironic.
Names like [name]Phineas[/name], [name]Thaddeus[/name], [name]Atticus[/name], [name]Archibald[/name], [name]Howard[/name], [name]Hieronymus[/name],[name]Peregrine[/name], [name]Oswin[/name], [name]Ulysses[/name], [name]Leonard[/name], [name]Ignatius[/name], [name]Cyprian[/name], [name]Zephyrin[/name], [name]Pearl[/name], [name]Augusta[/name], [name]Leocadia[/name], [name]Alma[/name], [name]Edith[/name], [name]Corisande[/name], [name]Henrietta[/name], Emmaretta, [name]Doris[/name], [name]Edna[/name], [name]Phaedra[/name], [name]Alethea[/name], [name]Melia[/name], [name]Eris[/name], [name]Arlenis[/name], [name]Mabry[/name], [name]Arantxa[/name], etc
I am no hipster, but at least local to m in my own mind the the rule of thumb is “If it could be a name on Mad Men, its hipster”. Again, that is local. I frequent a kids play place/cafe and of course run into the “hipster 4-5 years ago” names like [name]Hazel[/name] and [name]George[/name] but have met babies and toddler named [name]Frank[/name], [name]Zelda[/name], [name]Ned[/name], [name]Betsy[/name] and [name]Walt[/name]/er. There are more, I am blanking. But [name]Walt[/name]/er had two big sisters [name]Ruby[/name] and [name]Fay[/name], very hipster at least by me. And I did check since I am nosey, baby [name]Walt[/name]/er had his name chosen because mom and dad liked it, same with sisters.
Taz! I love that you mentioned [name]Prairie[/name].
I agree, that a new list needs to be made. The Hipster Trademark is such a rapidly evolving thing especially in the baby naming dept.
The [name]Walt[/name], [name]Fay[/name], and [name]Ruby[/name] sibset is cute.
Yes! I think it’s a rapidly changing trend cycle because of the attempt at trendlessness! At the same time there’s a classic or forgotten classic element to so many of these names…I can’t wait to meet babies named [name]Linda[/name], [name]Debora[/name], [name]Donna[/name], ect!
[name]Alma[/name]
[name]Agnes[/name]
[name]Clementine[/name]
[name]Darlene[/name]
[name]Dorothy[/name]/ [name]Theodora[/name]
[name]Edith[/name]
[name]Edna[/name]
[name]Esther[/name]
[name]Frances[/name]
[name]Florence[/name]
[name]Gloria[/name]
[name]Helen[/name]
[name]Henrietta[/name]
[name]Marjorie[/name]
[name]Martha[/name]
[name]Maude[/name]
[name]Maxine[/name]
[name]Irene[/name]
[name]Joan[/name]
[name]Judith[/name]
[name]Phyllis[/name]
[name]Roberta[/name]
[name]Ruth[/name]
[name]Sylvia[/name]
Well, the definition of “hipster” is supposed to be only thinking something is cool if absolutely no one else does. So I guess that would mean something utterly unusable like [name]Adolf[/name] for a boy, [name]Gertrude[/name] for a girl. But the true hipster move would be leaving your child unnamed until they were able to pick their own name. (Fun fact: That’s how Olympic Skier [name]Picabo[/name] [name]Street[/name] got her name. Her kids are [name]Eli[/name], [name]Trey[/name] & [name]Dax[/name])
I think saucy mid century names are about to make a comeback to go along with hipster parents love of music and anything retro or vintage. But I don’t mean [name]Victoriana[/name] here. I can predict the resurrection of double names, “een” and “lene” names and French names. Also names that sound southern or mid western with a Rockabilly flair and perhaps significance.
Possibly [name]Pauline[/name], [name]Sue[/name] [name]Ellen[/name]. [name]Suzette[/name], [name]June[/name], [name]Mae[/name] [name]Ella[/name], [name]Nadine[/name], [name]Laura[/name] [name]Jean[/name], [name]Rae[/name] [name]Ann[/name], [name]Collette[/name], [name]Myra[/name] [name]Gayle[/name], [name]Patsy[/name], [name]Marlene[/name], [name]Brenda[/name], [name]Darla[/name], [name]Dawn[/name], [name]Ruth[/name] [name]Ann[/name], [name]Sara[/name] [name]Jayne[/name], [name]Fayette[/name], [name]Rhonda[/name], [name]Charlene[/name], [name]Renee[/name], and [name]Annette[/name].
And I think you will! Hipsters avoid [name]Isabella[/name] and [name]Adelaide[/name] as one would the plague! These are the anti - Grandma names.
Eek! Odds are awful good I’ll name a future daughter [name]Elizabeth[/name] and call her [name]Betty[/name].
I’ve never watched Mad Men but since I mentioned [name]Betty[/name] I have heard about the character. But here’s the deal: as much as I avoid hipster crap like the plague (I won’t buy anything with a bird on it) I kinda think it’s about as bad to not name your kid something you like because some d-bag in [name]Brooklyn[/name] likes it, as it is to name your kid specifically to be like/impress some d-bag in [name]Brooklyn[/name].
[name]Elizabeth[/name] is old as hell, and [name]Betty[/name] has plenty of history, too. Sure, part of its appeal is its American kitsch WWII pinup vibe, but it also has a more antiquated elegance to it. That appeals to me, and if it also appeals to lame people, I guess I’ll just have to live with that.
The great thing about [name]Elizabeth[/name] is if she does find herself in a sea of hipster baby Bettys, she can always be [name]Elizabeth[/name]. Or [name]Libby[/name] or [name]Bess[/name] or [name]Liz[/name] or [name]Bizzy[/name] or Ezzy. And so on.
So sorry, hipsters, I’m claiming [name]Betty[/name] for the [name]Light[/name]!
