So two of my threads got locked this week, I’m assuming because they mentioned a few “not nice” words that some of my favorite names sound like or could be teased about.
Namely [name]Annalie[/name] and [name]Aurla[/name]. I’m sure you can figure out the nasty word that goes with the first and the second… well lets just say [name]Aurla[/name] sounds like [name]Orla[/name], which when the letters are scrambled is… yeah. You get it now.
So I understand why the threads were locked. But I didn’t give it much thought until I found a new name today that I found absolutely breath taking. The perfect combination of what I loved about [name]Annalie[/name] and [name]Aurla[/name]. It was PERFECT. It was [name]Aurelie[/name].
Then I said it out loud.
WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME?!?!?! Why do I like names that look or sound dirty?!
I do find this slightly humorous, so I thought I’d share.
I think [name]Aurelie[/name] is a stunning name. I think adding the “accent aigu” to the e in Aurélia, it changes the pronunciation from Orally to O-RELL - ee. I do hear what you are saying, and definitely see the teasing potential so what about making it [name]Aurelia[/name]? I think it fixes the problem for the most part (Aurélia is even better!).
You may also like the names:
[name]Aurora[/name] - g
[name]Aura[/name] - g
[name]Orly[/name]-g
[name]Aurelian[/name]/[name]Aurelian[/name] - b
[name]Orlando[/name] nn [name]Orly[/name]/[name]Orla[/name] for b or g
I know what you mean. I always liked [name]Sophie[/name] until I saw that it can be misheard as "Soapy’. [name]Erin[/name] is another love which can be misheard as “[name]Aaron[/name]”.
Truthfully I think people are attracted to sounds they like.
All of my 3 children have names with a “K” sound in them, and I didn’t realise this until much later. [name]Even[/name] now I love [name]Chloe[/name] as a name- another ‘K’ sound!
I think you like names that start with an “a”. I wouldn’t worry too much what rude minded people think.
[name]Love[/name] [name]Aurelie[/name]- sounds pretty.
I have seen and heard many variations of putting many vowels in one name with "R"s or "L"s as the dominant consonant.
And I don’t think anything is wrong of you for liking those names. Especially the new one you’ve found: [name]Aurelie[/name].
Like [name]Viv[/name] has said, it is very close to [name]Aurelia[/name] which is also beautiful.
[name]Aurelia[/name] was on my long list. It just doesn’t do it for me, though. I love -lie endings!
What if [name]Aurelie[/name] were pron Ahr-uh-lee instead of ohr-uh-lee?
I do like [name]Aura[/name]. Also [name]Auria[/name]/[name]Aria[/name]. [name]Eulalie[/name] feels a bit too… out there for the rest of my taste. [name]Aurora[/name] is a little too disney, but it’s beautiful. I sort of like [name]Orly[/name] and [name]Orla[/name], also.
I just remember playing the song [name]Aura[/name] [name]Lee[/name] for a piano lesson when I was young and thinking it was such a beautiful melody. ([name]Elvis[/name] [name]Presley[/name]'s song [name]Love[/name] Me Tender was written with the same tune.) Sigh.
At first glance, I would pronounce “[name]Aurelie[/name]” as “Ahr-uh-lee.”
I think it’s a beautiful name.
Heh and it may look like I am biased because of my name, but I do sincerely think [name]Aurelie[/name] is a good name. [name]Orla[/name] reminds me of the word “orca.” Eeep.
Bahaha! [name]Poppy[/name], that made me laugh a LOT!
I suspected my problem was freudian in nature. But I figured it probably had to do with my mom (whose name is [name]Laura[/name] [name]Ann[/name]) and the fact that I am drawn to names that all that have serious drawbacks and all echo the sounds of her name. Hahahaha!
Holst: glad to know someone is with me on the Ahr pron. And you’re in the states, so its not because you have a different accent, right? Most Californians I meet have pretty standard American accents.
Well I grew up around many people who spoke Spanish and French. The “Ahr” sound is easy for me to identify when I’m already familiar with the names [name]Aura[/name] (like Ahr-ah; similar to the pron. of [name]Audrey[/name] - “Ahd/Odd-ree”) or [name]Aurelia[/name] (I pronounce it as “Ahr-elle-ee-a”).
If I am speaking it in a general Californian accent, I suppose I would go either way - if I were someone who did not have the linguistic background similar to mine.
But I believe if a person has heard of “[name]Aurora[/name] Borealis” or knows of the tale of “Sleeping Beauty” (so they are familiar with “[name]Aurora[/name]”), it can be easy to assume “[name]Aurelie[/name]” is pronounced “Ahr-ugh-lee/Ahr-ah-lee.”
I suppose it really could go either way as far as pronunciation. The main reason -ohr came naturally to me first is because of the aur in [name]Laura[/name], but now that you brought up [name]Audrey[/name] and [name]Aurora[/name] its easier to see pronouncing it ahr. [name]One[/name] of my favorite boy names is [name]August[/name], also and that is pron like [name]Ah[/name], too.
[name]Long[/name] story short, if I have a future daughter we might spend our whole lives correcting people. I think I could handle that and I’ll have to think if I want to put my daughter through it.
I always liked the very Irish name Assumpta…sounds…not so good, lol. I always thought [name]Orla[/name] was cool, I didn’t even notice the unfortunate anagram.
And the name [name]Aurelie[/name] always reminds me of the French movie “[name]Love[/name] Me If You Dare” (French title: “Jeux d’Enfants”), the main character played by [name]Guillaume[/name] Canet hits on a girl in an exam hall called “[name]Aurelie[/name] [name]Miller[/name]”, and I can hear the teacher calling her name out in her French accent…so cool. lol.
I know some one named [name]Aura[/name] and she prounouces it Ar a …[name]Aurelia[/name]/[name]Aurelie[/name] is nice …but I don’t like [name]Orla[/name]…just too oral sounding to me…
