Thanks for helping me out on my own “how would you describe” thread! You were so helpful, hopefully I can return the favor
Lachlan Alexander - I don’t have the best associations with Lachlan, given that it’s the name of the Naga in Lost Girl who does a really good job of being a bad guy. But if I take a step back from that, Lachlan Alexander makes me think of a very restless, energetic sort of boy, always testing his limits and accepting over-the-top challenges. Ambitious, even as a little one, he pushes himself to jump higher, run faster, and ride harder than all the other boys, wearing his ensuing scrapes and bruises as badges of honor. A leader on the playground, as the others are somewhat in awe of his fearless conqueror spirit. He can cross the line into being a bit of a bully sometimes, but always starts guiltily when reminded of it, and gravely apologizes, winning the trust of his little army once again.
Lachlan Xavier - Intelligent and clear-eyed, displaying an analytical mind at a very young age. His serious demeanor and the focus with which he applies himself to puzzles and Lego constructions of vast and intricate proportions makes him seem much older than he is. But he can still let loose sometimes, and barrels around the yard with a grin stretching from ear to ear, always running directly into the wind so he can feel it blow his hair back and make his eyes tear up with the cold. He loves dogs and they love him, staring soulfully up at him while he sits at his father’s desk sketching the designs for his latest contraption, his little feet swinging from the office chair a good six inches from reaching the floor. He has dark hair and grey eyes.
Evander Alcott - The popular child, somewhat entitled and aloof. Likes the argyle vests and shiny shoes that most little lads can’t wait to rip off, and wears his “Sunday best” to nursery school. Hates to get his clothes dirty and enjoys his mother’s company more than most boys, always seeking her approval. Nevertheless, he’s not a bread and milk child, and excels at a number of surprisingly rough-and-tumble sports. Sunny blond hair and very blue eyes.
Lavender - a dreamy, airy sort of girl, with long dark hair and violet eyes. Loves to read a book outdoors curled in the sturdy low-hanging branches of a favorite tree. Tends a little garden plot and insists that the fairies live there, for she leaves them a dish of milk every night and wakes up in the morning to find it gone! Never mind that the the neighborhood’s collection of cats flock to her hands for the tasty treats she brings them. It’s clear that the dishes of milk were fairy-drunk, and that’s why her flowers grow so profusely.
MN Suggestions: Lavender Alice, Lavender Sylvie, Lavender Eve, Lavender Grace, Lavender Elaine, Lavender Phoebe, Lavender Blythe, Lavender Juliet, Lavender Thea, Lavender Clara
Corisande Fable - (omg love…Fable is on my shortlist as a middle name for Solomon) Passionate, independent and creative, a born writer. Even as a little girl she expresses herself through precisely elegant words and evocative imagery. She narrates her actions and the actions of those around her, memorizes the stories that she entreats her parents into reading again and again, checks out the maximum number of books on the library card every week and returns them all the next week for a new set. She acquires a variety of parchment papers and tries her hand at making her own inks from every possible combination of berry and root and leaf and bark available to her from the backyard, insisting on using a falcon feather she found by the wayside as a quill pen. She loves to dress up in her mother’s voluminous vintage gowns, ropes of pearls, lacy gloves, high heels, and elaborate fascinators, and deliver dramatic orations to her host of stuffed animals, neatly lined up in rows like a proper audience. Flouncy golden curls and laughing dark eyes. Josephine March is her hero.
Virginia Joy - my impression is probably influenced by the fact that my rather severe grandmother is named Virginia. But I picture her as being stately and refined, with a snapping dark passion underneath her genteel surface. A southern belle from a bygone era. It’s hard for me to see this name on a baby or a child, I think of someone like Scarlett O’Hara from Gone With the Wind.
Adelaide Pearl - The perfect balance of sweet and saucy. She minds her manners and smiles demurely at her elders, but delivers the most precocious answers with a wide-eyed innocence that is utterly convincing. Her daddy is wrapped around her little finger, but she never abuses her charm, other than the occasional harmless mischief. She’s a devoted daughter and loves learning all the little domestic things like sewing on buttons, making the perfect pie crust, starching a shirt, and setting the table just so. Her especial talents are sewing and music…those dainty deft fingers thread a needle and caress harp strings with equal ease.
Odessa Faye - utterly enchanting, whimsical, ethereal, she’s like a little fairy changeling. Cornsilk hair and green-grey eyes like shadowy forests. She’s an intriguing mix of shy and offbeat…she sings herself to sleep and wears princess dresses paired with gauzy ever-present fairy wings, but hides behind a parent when confronted with strangers. Prefers her own company for the most part, and has a vivid imagination that makes her perfectly content with her solitary games of pretend. She is deeply attached to her ballet lessons and comes alive onstage, even as a little one her talent shines bright. She dreams of one day dancing the lead in Swan Lake.
Natalie Winter - A confident child with long dark curls, a bold ringing laugh, and a penchant for red slippers (which will one day turn into a love of red lipstick). She’s the center of her group of friends and leads them on daring girly adventures. From an early age she loves to make things pretty and is always asking to give away one of her dresses to a friend who looks lovely in it, artfully grouping flowers and found objects on the kitchen table before dinner, cutting up fashion magazines and making paper dolls with the snapshots of runway models, dragging the furniture around in her room to rearrange the layout and saving up her paper-route money to buy buckets of vividly-colored paint for her walls and ceiling. She embraces change, even itches for it, and is eventually allowed to be homeschooled because she so chafes under the rigid routine of the classroom.
Hermione Jane - (I’m influenced by the HP character, I know…but even Jane feels this way to me.) Studious and perfectionistic, following the rules and being a good girl is very important to her. Beams out a sunny smile when given praise and approval. Has an insatiable appetite for knowledge and is a veritable repository of interesting facts, which she likes to randomly share at the dinner table. Demonstrates amazing foresight and planning skills for one her age, but doesn’t think well on her feet and becomes anxious when confronted with a situation that doesn’t lend itself to a by-the-book solution. Very talented with music and maths. Silky brown hair and warm hazel eyes behind cute little tortoiseshell glasses.
Cordelia - It’s very difficult for me to separate this name from Charisma Carpenter’s character in Buffy and the Angel spinoff. My impression of Cordelia as a rich, haughty, airheaded person with occasional flashes of surprising depth is due to the fact that this character is my only encounter with the name. But if I try really hard to put it aside, I can see a quiet, wistful child with long dark silky hair and blue-green eyes who longs to be a mermaid and collects shells, feathers, and ropes of pearls.
