What literary names would you use?

What is your favourite literary name? why? would you use it?

I love:
[name]Atticus[/name] - To kill a mockingbird
[name]Scout[/name] - To kill a Mockingbird
I love the book To kill a Mockingbird and it is a book I read over and over. It is also the book my father gave me just before he died so it reminds me of him - he was just like [name]Atticus[/name]
I would use both of these names

[name]Clove[/name]
[name]Rue[/name]
[name]Primrose[/name]
[name]Katniss[/name] (maybe, but probably for a middle name)
[name]Gale[/name]
Renesme (?)
[name]Ree[/name]

My favorite books right now are The Hunger Games and [name]Winters[/name] Bone (which is where a [name]Ree[/name] comes from), and I honestly love the names. [name]Even[/name] if I only thought the book was OK I still love these names. I think it’s cause I love original names, and I’ve never heard those names before…

And as much as I dislike Twilight, I REALLY like Renesme (even though I don’t know how to spell it  ). I think it’s beautiful, and unique!

[name]Eppie[/name], from [name]Silas[/name] Marner. In the book her full name is [name]Hephzibah[/name], but I’d stick to just [name]Eppie[/name].

[name]Rilla[/name]- from the [name]Anne[/name] of [name]Green[/name] Gables series. Although, I would NOT use its full name version- [name]Marilla[/name].

I also love [name]Grady[/name] from All the Pretty Horses… The main character is [name]John[/name] [name]Grady[/name] [name]Cole[/name], and I find [name]Grady[/name] to be handsome, laid back and strong… However my hubby thinks its horrible, so it was vetoed early on in naming discussions. Boo.

[name]Phineas[/name]
[name]Catalina[/name]
[name]Calliope[/name]
[name]Cordelia[/name]
[name]Darcy[/name]
[name]Ellery[/name]
[name]Guinevere[/name]
[name]Hana[/name]
[name]Juliet[/name]
[name]Regan[/name]
[name]Wendy[/name]
[name]Eben[/name]
[name]Phillip[/name] ([name]Pip[/name])
[name]Anne[/name]
[name]Lyra[/name]
[name]Elinor[/name]
[name]Molly[/name]
[name]Arthur[/name]
[name]Jane[/name]
[name]Beatrice[/name]

My favorite would have to be [name]Georgiana[/name] from Pride&Prejudice, [name]Jane[/name] Eyre, and The Forgotten Garden. I started liking this name after I read P&P for the first time just because I’d never heard of it and because it sounded so princessy (I was 12). I really don’t know if I have the guts to actually call someone this. We’ll see when the time comes.

I also love [name]Briony[/name] from Atonement, but I don’t know if I like the idea of naming someone after a character who ruined her sister and friend’s lives.

[name]Diana[/name] and [name]Walter[/name] from “[name]Anne[/name] of [name]Green[/name] Gables” - LM [name]Montgomery[/name]

[name]Aravis[/name] and [name]Edmund[/name] from “Chronicles of [name]Narnia[/name]” - CS [name]Lewis[/name]

[name]Esme[/name] from “For [name]Esme[/name] With [name]Love[/name] and Squalor” - JD [name]Salinger[/name]

See, my problem is that I [name]LOVE[/name] some literary works, but I don’t love the names in them, or I love certain names from literature, but not exactly the literary work itself. I feel like the two should work together, haha. I also feel like if I use a name from a work of literature, I should want to honor that character, too, not just the name from a story I loved. Anywho. These are the ones where all the criteria combine.

[name]Atticus[/name] - TKMB (although I’m not a huge fan of the book, it just didn’t wow me, but [name]Atticus[/name] did stand up for something great, and I love that there was a [name]Christian[/name] martyr named [name]Atticus[/name], as well)

[name]Sebastian[/name], [name]Viola[/name], and [name]Olivia[/name] - Twelfth [name]Night[/name] (I like [name]Viola[/name]'s character over [name]Olivia[/name]'s, but I like [name]Olivia[/name]'s name more… still, Twelfth [name]Night[/name] is my favorite work by [name]Shakespeare[/name], so [name]Olivia[/name]'s sort of a nod to him in general for me)

[name]Cecily[/name], [name]Gwendolen[/name], [name]Jack[/name], [name]Algernon[/name], etc. - The Importance of Being [name]Earnest[/name] ([name]LOVE[/name] this play! Probably my favorite literary work ever)

[name]Elliot[/name] - not a FN, but I loved [name]Jane[/name] [name]Austen[/name]'s Persuasion.

[name]Eliza[/name], [name]Jane[/name], [name]Lydia[/name], ([name]Georgiana[/name], [name]Caroline[/name]) - [name]How[/name] could you not love the [name]Bennet[/name] sisters? And Pride and Prejudice in general?

[name]Peter[/name], [name]Caspian[/name] - The Chronicles of [name]Narnia[/name]. I’ve also been toying with [name]Shasta[/name], from The Horse and His Boy… I recently heard an audio drama of it, and I really loved [name]Shasta[/name], although I’ve read elsewhere that it’s a girls’ name? It seems so boyish to me because of the book!

[name]Armand[/name]! - I love The [name]Scarlet[/name] Pimpernel (actually, my whole family does, lol), but [name]Armand[/name] is the only character’s name I loved. While [name]Percy[/name] and [name]Marguerite[/name] are more interesting, I always secretly loved [name]Armand[/name]!)

[name]Hero[/name] - Much [name]Ado[/name] About Nothing (probably my second favorite Shakespearean work–I love [name]Shakespeare[/name]! haha. I don’t know if I could use it, though–[name]Hero[/name]'s a lot to live up to!)

[name]Emilia[/name] - A Comedy of Errors (told you I loved [name]Shakespeare[/name]! haha. I loved [name]Emilia[/name] in this, not to mention [name]Luciana[/name], and an added bonus is that my great-grandmother’s MN was [name]Amelia[/name], so I feel like this would honor both a love–literature–and a beloved family member, as well)

I love literature, so I’m sure there are a million others, those are just the favorites right now. I also LOVED [name]Les[/name] Miserables, A Tale of Two Cities, etc., but not their names, really. And I love [name]Evangeline[/name] ([name]Henry[/name] Wadsworth [name]Longfellow[/name]'s [name]Evangeline[/name]… a story I’ve always wanted to read, and after I actually do, maybe it’ll move up to the first list!), [name]Jonas[/name] (The Giver), [name]Esme[/name] (For [name]Esme[/name] With [name]Love[/name] and Squalor), [name]Holden[/name] (The Catcher in the [name]Rye[/name]), [name]Isabella[/name] (Northanger [name]Abbey[/name]), etc., but I’ve never read the books/stories to actually know if I love the characters (or the books), so I don’t quite claim their literary cred, but I do like them as nods to something I’ve always loved–reading and literature.

[name]Jem[/name]- To Kill A Mockingbird is my favorite book, as well. Though I like [name]Atticus[/name]'s heroism, [name]Scout[/name]'s precociousness and Boo’s kindness, it is [name]Jem[/name] that is my favorite character.

[name]Finch[/name]- I would use this as a middle name to honor the whole [name]Finch[/name] family.

[name]March[/name]- Similarly to [name]Finch[/name], I would use this middle (or possibly a first for a boy) to honor [name]Louisa[/name] [name]May[/name] [name]Alcott[/name]'s [name]Little[/name] Women. I like the combo [name]Marigold[/name] [name]March[/name] for its similarity to [name]Margaret[/name] [name]March[/name] ([name]Meg[/name]'s my favorite!) and its spunky alliteration.

[name]Gwendolyn[/name]- I love The Importance of Being [name]Earnest[/name], but the character isn’t particularly special to me, and I prefer the name with a y.

[name]Thisbe[/name]- I love this name, and I like its connection to the tragic story.

[name]Arthur[/name]- If I could find a nickname I like with this name, I’d use it in a heartbeat. I like that it’s from TKMB, [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name] and the [name]King[/name] [name]Arthur[/name] legends.

I already have a [name]Lorna[/name] who gets called [name]Lorna[/name] [name]Doon[/name] all the time. I don’t know how “literary” it is, but some of my favorite girl names are comic book heroine secret identities: [name]Amara[/name], [name]Amina[/name], [name]Layla[/name], [name]Nuria[/name].

[name]Guinevere[/name]
[name]Zenobia[/name] ([name]Ethan[/name] Frome by [name]Edith[/name] [name]Wharton[/name])
[name]Briony[/name]/[name]Bryony[/name]
[name]Caspian[/name]
[name]Araminta[/name]
[name]Gwendolen[/name]
Lenia (Mermaid)

Girls
[name]Hazel[/name] - [name]Robert[/name] Heinlein character, probably my single favourite female character in science fiction.
[name]Beatrice[/name] - Much [name]Ado[/name] About Nothing
[name]Emily[/name] - [name]Emily[/name] of New [name]Moon[/name], a [name]Lucy[/name] [name]Maude[/name] [name]Montgomery[/name] novel. Another I liked was [name]Marigold[/name] from [name]Magic[/name] for [name]Marigold[/name].
[name]Viola[/name] - Twelfth [name]Night[/name].
[name]Rowena[/name] - [name]Ivanhoe[/name]
[name]Mary[/name] - my favourite fictional [name]Mary[/name] is probably from The [name]Secret[/name] Garden.
[name]Caroline[/name] - Another Heinlein character.
[name]Ivy[/name], [name]Selina[/name], [name]Talia[/name] - Yes I like Batman.
Thistle - The assumed false name of a faery in a CJ Cherryh novel. I guess I am strange.

Boys
[name]Arthur[/name] - Arthurian legend mainly.
[name]Edmund[/name] - [name]Narnia[/name]
[name]Henry[/name] - Oh, a number of places but shamefully my first love of it was probably on Beast, from the X-men. Talk about intelligent and strong.
[name]Archie[/name] and [name]Nero[/name] - [name]Nero[/name] [name]Wolfe[/name] mysteries
[name]Lazarus[/name] - Another Heinlein name for me.
[name]Thaddeus[/name] - A [name]Stephen[/name] [name]King[/name] character, oddly enough.
[name]Roland[/name] - And another [name]Stephen[/name] [name]King[/name] character.
Eddard, NN [name]Ned[/name] - Yes, I like Game of Thrones. I haven’t seen the show though.
[name]Augustus[/name] - all my love is probably from reading Lonesome [name]Dove[/name] at an impressionable age.
