The people I’ve known with really fascinating/unusual names are what stands out. From Kindergarten through high school I went to school with a Daylene. It was such an unusual name in a sea of [name]Brittany[/name]/[name]Megan[/name]/[name]Katie[/name]/[name]Heather[/name] that I thought it was awesome.
[name]Ysabel[/name]. The [name]Isabella[/name] trend hadn’t hit yet (it was 1996) and I’d never met any [name]Isabel[/name]/[name]Isabella[/name]/Ect. and the traditional Spanish spelling was so different. I thought it was awesome.
bnoelle - Question for you. [name]How[/name] do you pronounce the little boy’s name. Is it a short a or like the herb and rhymes with [name]Hazel[/name]?
When my sister named her first son [name]Sailor[/name] (13.5 years ago) it stopped me in my tracks. I had never heard that name. She also has a daughter named [name]Chesley[/name] - which really grew on me once I stopped screwing up and calling her [name]Chelsea[/name]. We have a Raynbo and a [name]Precious[/name] at work, but that is not a happy halt. More of “I’m sorry” stop.
To us, the short ‘a’ is how we say the herb. [name]Baz[/name]-l (the I sort of disappears). http://www.forvo.com/word/basil/ < Hear the pronunciation by sweetie_candykim.
When my boyfriend told me his one year old nephew was [name]Dean[/name], I about lost it. I was so happy to see such a traditional, uncommon name (I’ve only ever met one other [name]Dean[/name]). I asked if it was a family name or anything, which it’s not. I swooned.
I went camping a few years ago with my family on a small site which we always used to go to and the family next to us (who my parents still see often) have 3 kids. 2 girls called [name]Pacific[/name] & [name]Marina[/name] and a boy called Seattle. They go by [name]Paci[/name], [name]Rina[/name] & Sea.
I also know a [name]Seven[/name] (b) who is 13 and a girl called Zafrina
Over the years I’ve also met-
Sport (b)
Cedd (b)
Foal (g)
[name]Skip[/name] - his name was [name]Skip[/name]. It wasn’t a nickname or anything.
[name]Ireland[/name] (g)
Vox (b)
I once knew a girl called [name]Cinnamon[/name] Waterfall. I’m not even joking - but what was worse was that her last name was [name]Johnson[/name], and her little brother was called [name]Kyle[/name].
[name]Cinnamon[/name] and [name]Kyle[/name] [name]Johnson[/name] - somehow I think the boy got the better deal in the naming stakes
