What Name Suits You?

As a name-nerd, I find myself CONSTANTLY trying to figure out if a person’s name ‘suits’ them, and coming up with what name would fit them better. I even do this with people I’ve never spoken with - just based off of looks alone.

Personally, I’ve been told on a couple different occasions that I look like a ‘[name_f]Heather[/name_f]’. Eck. No offense to anyone, I just don’t see it!

[b]So, this is a three part question:

  1. Does your given name suit you, in your opinion? Have others ‘renamed’ you?

  2. Either way, if given the choice, what would you name yourself? Not just a name that you love - but a name that you feel really works well with your appearance and/or personality? Why?

  3. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you have any close friends or family members who have a name that just doesn’t seem quite right for them? [/b]

This has always interested me! I’ll post my reply in a little bit.

  • [name_f]Aggie[/name_f]-

My name is [name_f]Sarina[/name_f], which is a spelling variation of [name_f]Serena[/name_f].

1. Does your given name suit you, in your opinion? Have others ‘renamed’ you? Yes, I think my given name suits me. However, it wasn’t until the past two years that I began to think so. No one has ever told me that I resembl a person with a different name. In fact, I’ve asked people what they WOULD rename me, and they always say that “[name_f]Sarina[/name_f]” is the only name that suits me.

2. Either way, if given the choice, what would you name yourself? Not just a name that you love - but a name that you feel really works well with your appearance and/or personality? Why? I thought about this for a long time, and I think I would change it to [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f], [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] or [name_f]Theodora[/name_f]. I know I’d need something classic with history, but not something common (much like my own name). Also, again, like my own name, I’d want it to not be ultra feminine, and offer a nickname that is also not too feminine, I guess (ie. I go by [name_f]Sari[/name_f]).

3. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you have any close friends or family members who have a name that just doesn’t seem quite right for them? Yes, tons and tons of people. A few of my cousins and classmates, for example. In fact, I have a cousin and a classmate who both go by their middle names because their first names really don’t suit them.

  1. Does your given name suit you, in your opinion? Have others ‘renamed’ you?
Yes, my given name does suit me. While [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] is considered common, to me it is classic, beautiful and kind sounding. I do wish I had a name with a tad more personality at times. Others have told me I seem like a “[name_f]Molly[/name_f]”, which is what I was almost named. While I agree with this, I prefer [name_f]Sarah[/name_f].

  2. Either way, if given the choice, what would you name yourself? Not just a name that you love - but a name that you feel really works well with your appearance and/or personality? Why?
I think any classic and “vintage” name with a bit of spunk would fit me. For a long while I would have renamed myself [name_f]Nora[/name_f]. Now I feel like [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] or [name_f]Ramona[/name_f] might be more suited. I do love simplicity though, and can’t picture myself with a long and luxurious name, so [name_f]Nora[/name_f] is probably most suited.

  3. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you have any close friends or family members who have a name that just doesn’t seem quite right for them?
I have a much younger cousin who I have always thought didn’t fully suit his name. His name is very common, which is fine because it works on most personalities, but he happens to be a very sensitive and smart kid with a very old soul. I can see him fitting [name_u]Theo[/name_u] or [name_m]Harry[/name_m] better than his own name.

1. Does your given name suit you, in your opinion? Have others ‘renamed’ you?
My name is [name_f]Jessica[/name_f], which I don’t think suits me one bit. I go by [name_u]Jessie[/name_u] which suits me a lot more, I like the vintage feel of [name_u]Jessie[/name_u], it was very popular in Australia (where I’m from) in the 1800’s.People used to tell me I look like a [name_f]Samantha[/name_f]/[name_u]Sam[/name_u] which my parents were actually going to name me. Different people at different times have nick named me [name_f]Birdie[/name_f] which I think is cute. [b]

  1. Either way, if given the choice, what would you name yourself? Not just a name that you love - but a name that you feel really works well with your appearance and/or personality? Why?
[/b]hmm, thats tough. In all honesty ( I wouldn’t even use these names) I feel like I could be a [name_f]Grace[/name_f] or a [name_f]Bridey[/name_f] (pronounced [name_f]Bride[/name_f]-ee as the Australian way). Totally different names, but fits with my look and personality.(I think?) I feel like [name_f]Bridey[/name_f] could work because it’s similar to [name_f]Birdie[/name_f] which I get called now, and has a slightly offbeat light, vintage feel. I know no one likes this name though lol. [name_f]Grace[/name_f] just fits who I am right now, I can’t really explain.[b]

  2. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you have any close friends or family members who have a name that just doesn’t seem quite right for them?
    [/b]nothing that comes to mind…weird!

1. Does your given name suit you, in your opinion? Have others ‘renamed’ you?
My name is [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] and I think it suits me very well. It’s classic and a little prim, but also sweet and southern. I have often been told that I look like a [name_u]Meredith[/name_u] though, another name that I like. But I do prefer [name_f]Caroline[/name_f].

2. Either way, if given the choice, what would you name yourself? Not just a name that you love - but a name that you feel really works well with your appearance and/or personality? Why?
Hmmm…I honestly don’t know. Maybe [name_f]Anna[/name_f]? I feel like it’s feminine but also has a lot of stuff to it.

3. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you have any close friends or family members who have a name that just doesn’t seem quite right for them?
One of my closest friends is named [name_u]Ashtyn[/name_u]. I’ve always thought she seemed more like a [name_u]Piper[/name_u]: very spunky and happy and slightly tomboy-ish, but still very feminine. (She has four older brothers!)

1. Does your given name suit you, in your opinion? Have others ‘renamed’ you?
My name is [name_f]Rachel[/name_f] and I think it does suit me. It’s classic and straight-forward and feminine without being frilly. People have said I look like a [name_f]Helen[/name_f] or a [name_f]Jennifer[/name_f] which are both names I think fit that description as well.

2. Either way, if given the choice, what would you name yourself? Not just a name that you love - but a name that you feel really works well with your appearance and/or personality? Why?
[name_f]Alexandra[/name_f] - I’ve always felt like this should be my name. I’ve always wanted to be called [name_u]Alex[/name_u]! I think a longer feminine name with a spunky unisex nickname would really suit me because sometimes I’m girly but I can still sometimes be a real tomboy.

3. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you have any close friends or family members who have a name that just doesn’t seem quite right for them?
I did know a girl my age from Hong Kong named [name_f]Doris[/name_f]! She had a Chinese name as well but she’d chosen [name_f]Doris[/name_f] as her English name but I don’t think it suited her. It’s such an old-fashioned and serious name and she was a really bubbly fun person. I think she should have had a quirky, spunky name like [name_f]Lola[/name_f]!

1. Does your given name suit you, in your opinion? Have others ‘renamed’ you? Totally. [name_f]Cynthia[/name_f] really, really suits me. I’ve been called many names but when you said ‘renamed’, I can only think about [name_f]Luna[/name_f] and [name_f]Anna[/name_f]. My friend renamed me [name_f]Luna[/name_f]. He believes (believed?) [name_f]Luna[/name_f] suits me because I love astronomy and I, in a roundabout way, had remind him to [name_f]Luna[/name_f] Lovegood. I think it was because of my quirkiness, lol. On the other hand, [name_f]Anna[/name_f]… my childhood friends renamed me [name_f]Anna[/name_f]. I used to dislike it, but now I’m completely in love with [name_f]Anna[/name_f]. I still use this name sometimes.

2. Either way, if given the choice, what would you name yourself? Not just a name that you love - but a name that you feel really works well with your appearance and/or personality? Why? [name_f]Luna[/name_f] or Belphoebe. For the moon-y/moonstruck aspect. Lol. I just think moon names suits me. I am a night owl, moody and ‘lunatic’. I love night sky. I am a cancerian, ruled by the moon (not that it actually matters, it’s just for fun). I was born in [name_u]June[/name_u] (another trivial thing, I just like the connection), so besides pearl, by birth stone is moonstone.

3. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you have any close friends or family members who have a name that just doesn’t seem quite right for them? well, yes. My ex-college roommate, some other friends and family members. I am not in the place to judge though…

1. Does your given name suit you, in your opinion? Have others ‘renamed’ you?

I feel like my nickname suits me better than my given name. To my knowledge, no one has said that I look like another name. Originally, I was going to be named [name_f]Alice[/name_f] and my dad says he wishes that was my name; [name_m]Even[/name_m] though he gave me the name I have.

2. Either way, if given the choice, what would you name yourself? Not just a name that you love - but a name that you feel really works well with your appearance and/or personality? Why?

I have thought about changing my name to either [name_f]Mia[/name_f] or [name_f]Rachel[/name_f]. When I look in the mirror, I feel like my name should be [name_f]Rachel[/name_f]. It’s hard to explain why. It just seems right.

3. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you have any close friends or family members who have a name that just doesn’t seem quite right for them?

My friend’s mom just had a son named [name_m]Jethro[/name_m] and granted, it’s an interesting choice, but he does not look, in any shape or form, like a [name_m]Jethro[/name_m].

1. Does your given name suit you, in your opinion? Have others ‘renamed’ you? I think my given name suits me, and it has a lot of options as far as nicknames go. Some days I can be a [name_f]Kaitlin[/name_f], some days I’m [name_f]Kate[/name_f], some days I’m a [name_f]Katie[/name_f]. But overall I think it’s a good fit for my appearance/personality. Nobody has ever renamed me on purpose, but there have been incidents where people called me a random name they ‘thought’ was my name… I was ‘Miss [name_f]Sarah[/name_f]’ to some preschool kids and ‘Miss [name_u]Ashley[/name_u]’ to others (can’t see myself as either of those names), a customer at a restaurant I used to bus at called me exclusively [name_u]Abby[/name_u] (which is my cousin’s name, only [name_u]Abbey[/name_u]), and a former coworker was convinced my name was [name_f]Krystal[/name_f], which - sorry Krystals - I think is awful.

2. Either way, if given the choice, what would you name yourself? Not just a name that you love - but a name that you feel really works well with your appearance and/or personality? Why? Some of the other names my mom was considering for me were [name_f]Hannah[/name_f], [name_f]Lydia[/name_f], and [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f]… I think I could pull off being a [name_f]Hannah[/name_f] due to appearance, but not quite peppy enough for the name personality wise. Maybe [name_f]Lydia[/name_f], although I picture a [name_f]Lydia[/name_f] as having long, dark, curly hair like my mom and mine is straight/wavy and light brown. Not [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f], I don’t know why. I just wouldn’t make a good [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f]. If I was picking for myself, I’d go with something older, maybe a little fusty, with a cute nickname. I’ve often been told I have a very 1920s look and I love that era, so I think [name_f]Alice[/name_f], [name_f]Florence[/name_f] NN [name_u]Ren[/name_u], or [name_f]Helen[/name_f] NN [name_u]Lennie[/name_u] would work for me.

3. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you have any close friends or family members who have a name that just doesn’t seem quite right for them? My godmother’s name is [name_f]Kathy[/name_f], and I just don’t think it’s “her”. I’d probably rename her something earthy yet ethereal, like [name_f]Grace[/name_f] or [name_f]Faye[/name_f]. [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] maybe, she could be a good [name_f]Fiona[/name_f].

1. Does your given name suit you, in your opinion? Have others ‘renamed’ you?

Well, my name is [name_f]Agatha[/name_f], but I go by [name_f]Aggie[/name_f] virtually 100% of the time. It suits me perfectly, [name_f]IMO[/name_f]. It’s a bit old, but the nickname is fun and quirky. It helps that I’m the only [name_f]Aggie[/name_f] I’ve ever known… so I can’t even imagine what another one would be like! Other people have told me that I look like a [name_f]Heather[/name_f], [name_f]Carrie[/name_f] or [name_u]Casey[/name_u]…and I’ve recently gotten [name_u]Ashley[/name_u]

[b]2. Either way, if given the choice, what would you name yourself? Not just a name that you love - but a name that you feel really works well with your appearance and/or personality? Why?[/b]

I’ve always seen myself as a Molly or a [name_f]Lola[/name_f] - which in my generation would be a lot more offbeat than today. I’m quite energetic and usually very happy. I also see [name_f]Lola[/name_f] as a girl that has a style similar to my own.

3. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you have any close friends or family members who have a name that just doesn’t seem quite right for them?

Yes, quite a few. My husband, as much as I love his name…is no [name_m]Stephen[/name_m]. He goes by [name_m]Shep[/name_m], which suits him so much better.
His mother, who is [name_f]Diane[/name_f], is Lebanese…and I’ve always thought she should have a much more exotic name.
