Name trends come and go but there are some that most people don’t like. What name trends do you hate? I hate names that end in -leigh or -lee (like Ashleigh and [name_f]Everlee[/name_f]) and I also hate names that end in -ayden (like [name_u]Brayden[/name_u] and [name_u]Hayden[/name_u])
I HAVE TO AGREE! Worded it perfectly for me, I hate names like that! Also hate names with unneeded changed spelling! I also hate the middle name trends such as [name_u]Marie[/name_u], [name_f]Rose[/name_f], [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], and [name_f]Nicole[/name_f]! Their so popular they have memes of them! It’s all laughs though most names in the end usually don’t harm anybody!
The -son ones; [name_u]Jackson[/name_u], [name_u]Greyson[/name_u], bother me quite a bit. Also, gender swapping really traditional names, like [name_u]James[/name_u] for a girl. I guess I prefer [name_f]Merel[/name_f] on a boy…so I’m not really one to talk, but that’s different because of etymology and history. Also Mc- or [name_m]Mac[/name_m]-, though I like [name_f]Makenna[/name_f]. Really any ones that use surnames as first names as well, but I nurse a soft spot for [name_u]Campbell[/name_u]. Oh, and naming your kid a name that has a lot of cultural and religious value to certain groups of people, I won’t go into detail on that one.
All in all, I’m a sort of a hypocrite, key word: sort of.
xxx - [name_f]Aleksandra[/name_f] “[name_f]Aleksa[/name_f]” Y.
Leigh, [name_u]Lee[/name_u], [name_m]Mac[/name_m]
Using traditionally boys names for girls and vice versa.
Kre8tiv spellings says the person who spells their name “[name_f]Maie[/name_f]”
The -leigh names and boy names on girls were the first two to come to mind.
Using names that have deep religious or cultural significance to a particular group you’re not part of (possible hot take: this potentially includes god and goddess names if you’re not pagan— case by case basis though).
Using a “y” where an “i” would belong (Myranda and Olyvia come to mind).
I don’t really hate any trends, but I do wish I could meet kids with more unique names. I get bored of hearing [name_f]Sophia[/name_f], [name_f]Mia[/name_f], [name_m]Jack[/name_m], etc.
then again I may use a trendy name in the future I’m just trying to avoid ones I feel like I meet on every 3rd baby
I know a sweet young boy named [name_m]Hector[/name_m] and I love how little I normally see that for kids.
Boy names on girls. Most trends I’m fine with, but that really annoys me, especially when the parents take names from a different culture and switch the gender.
Exactly, boys names for girls, particularly where there is also cultural appropriation.
Honestly I usually don’t care about trends but the -leigh one gets me because I always say them wrong! I always end up saying it like -lay instead of -lee so [name_f]Ashleigh[/name_f] is [name_f]Ashlay[/name_f], [name_u]Everleigh[/name_u] is Everlay, etc, etc, etc. Also spelling things wrong to make it more unique even though it’s literally the same exact name spelled weird. It makes it so hard to read.
Also one name trend that I don’t understand why people dislike so much are boy names for girls. I think that if your honoring somebody than it’s absolutely fine to use boy names for girls and vise versa (I personally keep them in the middle but I think they can be used as a first just fine!). I think it’s just the image for me. I can imagine a girl name Miriam but I can’t imagine a boy while my #1 Mavis I love for a girl but also think it’d be kinda cool on a boy!
Same here, I always have to do a mental correction
I have a lot of trends I really, really dislike. A lot of them match yours.
Endings:
-[name_u]Leigh[/name_u]/lee
-[name_m]Son[/name_m]
-[name_u]Ayden[/name_u]
I cannot stand boy names on girls. [name_u]James[/name_u], [name_u]Blake[/name_u], [name_u]Elliot[/name_u], etc. If your daughter wants to go by a more masculine name when she’s older, that’s fine, but imposing it on her as a baby just feels wrong.
Word names. The more unusual names to be exact.
[name_m]Don[/name_m]'t get me wrong, I actually love word names in general. Some of them are my favorite names.
I just think that there’s too many of them now, and I partly blame celebrities for that.
I feel like people are now just trying to find the most “unique” words to name their kids, and neglecting some pretty cool ones that aren’t too common and would actually work better as names.
Lately I’ve seen Memory, [name_m]Knowledge[/name_m], [name_u]Power[/name_u], etc. just to name a few.
I admit that they sound interesting in theory, but I feel like they’re just setting the kid up to get made fun of later on.
I hope this didn’t offend anyone. I know it probably doesn’t make a lot of sense, but it was hard for me to explain what I meant.
I agree, someone named their female pet [name_u]Misha[/name_u] while fully knowing that it was a male name, just just because it “sounded cute”. I cringe whenever they mention her. At least it’s not a human, I guess?
[name_u]Amariah[/name_u], [name_u]Carbry[/name_u] and [name_u]Dara[/name_u] are definitely boys’ names to me. I don’t care if they sound “girly”.
Hate is too strong, but I dislike:
- Most 'lyn names
- Using the same dozen names for about a milliion kids
- Anything misspelled
- Surnames on girls
- A lot of x names like [name_u]Paxton[/name_u], Saxton, [name_u]Braxton[/name_u]
- The [name_m]Braden[/name_m], [name_m]Caden[/name_m], [name_u]Jayden[/name_u] trend
- Nicknames like JR or RK
- Anything that sounds like money - [name_m]Cash[/name_m], [name_u]Chase[/name_u], [name_f]Tiffany[/name_f], etc.
- Anything spelled backward
- Names like [name_m]Lucifer[/name_m] or [name_u]Messiah[/name_u] or [name_f]Destiny[/name_f] or [name_f]Trinity[/name_f]
- Nicknames for names when they are not strong enough to stand alone
- The whole [name_f]Kayla[/name_f]/Layla/Lila/Lola/Lolita trend
- Names with famous powerful negative associations like [name_f]Persephone[/name_f], [name_m]Manson[/name_m], [name_f]Niobe[/name_f], [name_m]Orestes[/name_m], etc.
- Totally bizarre sounds as first names (Biz or that sort of thing)
- K names that are misspelled and to me, unfortunate
I suppose I don’t like creatively spelled names.
I gotta say though that I do like the name [name_u]Leigh[/name_u]/Lee. And some names that include them. For me it’s the meaning. Meadows are so peaceful to me. So the imagery is appealing. During one labor, I imagined a tree swaying in the breeze in the middle of a field. I’ve never used a [name_u]Leigh[/name_u] name though. Partially because I have an in-law whose last name is a homonym of [name_u]Leigh[/name_u].
I strongly dislike ‘creative
spellings’. Ugh!
I also really don’t like a lot of X names as mentioned above. Especially* when people invent a name … Xian instead of [name_u]Zion[/name_u]. Or Xarys pronounced Zaris. But I really hate it when the boy is named [name_m]Xavier[/name_m] and they don’t know to pronounce it Zave-yer and instead say
ex-zayveeyer.
Lastly, I just think any nickname is probably ok but make sure the child has a proper given name.
A neighbor’s daughter is [name_f]Bunny[/name_f] and she’s darling but- she’s 4. I think when she’s 19… or 47… she’s apt to be annoyed or dismayed. Had she been named say, [name_f]Bethany[/name_f] and nn’d [name_f]Bunny[/name_f], she’d at least have a fallback.
James as a middle for girls. Please make it stop
I’m personally not a fan of names that have the ‘ile’ or ‘ayl’ sound. Examples…
Tyler, [name_u]Tayler[/name_u], [name_f]Kyla[/name_f], [name_f]Layla[/name_f], [name_u]Riley[/name_u], [name_f]Kylie[/name_f], [name_f]Miley[/name_f]. You get the picture.
I quite like word names as names, however I think when you use word names for both first and middle like ‘[name_u]Ocean[/name_u] [name_u]Fox[/name_u]’ it doesn’t work at all.
And I find it funny that people hate place names, but then will use the name [name_f]Florence[/name_f]!
I guess my biggest peeves when it comes to names are creatively spelled names (this doesn’t include international variations of names which I love) and smoosh names that are terribly done & more than likely made up (i.e. combining Chrïstöphër/Chrïstïän and Röbërt to get Örëstïnä [an actual name] is fine, but combining Bärbärä and Pämëlä to get Barmela is not [what would the nn be… [name_u]Bar[/name_u]?)
I do too! I’m not personally a fan of [name_f]Florence[/name_f] (nothing wrong with it, just nms) but there’s also:
-
[name_f]Adelaide[/name_f]
-
[name_u]Aspen[/name_u]
-
[name_m]Caspian[/name_m]
-
[name_u]Eden[/name_u]
-
[name_f]Georgia[/name_f]
-
[name_f]Vienna[/name_f]
All of which I like and see on here not-infrequently. All are place names, most of major cities/states, and in [name_f]Georgia[/name_f]’s case even a country!
There’s nothing wrong with not liking a name or a type of name, but I think sometimes people (myself included!) are a bit quick to write off an entire category of name completely.
