What names do you consider “modern”?

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] all!

Have been reading through the forums and browsing though nameberries lists and still trying to get an idea of what exactly is a ‘modern’ name?

I like the idea of a name being modern but I’m a bit unsure what fits the style.

Would love to what you think makes a name modern!

For me, “modern” and “trendy” and nearly the same thing. For example, the very popular “v” sound in names like [name_f]Ava[/name_f], [name_f]Olivia[/name_f], [name_u]Everett[/name_u], [name_m]Maverick[/name_m], etc., occupational and surname names like [name_u]Addison[/name_u], [name_u]Mason[/name_u], [name_m]Jackson[/name_m], etc., and those “hipster” names like [name_m]Fox[/name_m], [name_u]Dash[/name_u], [name_u]Juniper[/name_u], and [name_f]Willow[/name_f] all feel very modern and trendy to me.

Typically trendy names, by not all trendy names. For example, names like [name_m]Oliver[/name_m], [name_u]Noah[/name_u], [name_f]Penelope[/name_f], [name_f]Violet[/name_f], and [name_f]Lily[/name_f] are both extremely popular/trendy at the moment, but are all classics. Names like [name_u]Everly[/name_u], [name_u]Brooklyn[/name_u], [name_u]Brayden[/name_u], and [name_m]Landon[/name_m] I see as modern. So, pretty much any names that are trendy that aren’t classics and will be dated in 20 years.

I mostly think of made up names, occupational names, surname names for girls, word names etc.
[name_u]Everett[/name_u] for example has been a popular name in the 1900’s so definitely not modern. ([name_m]Even[/name_m] though it is popular now too). Same with [name_f]Emma[/name_f].
[name_u]Dash[/name_u], [name_u]Juniper[/name_u], [name_m]Wolf[/name_m], [name_u]Madison[/name_u], [name_u]Emerson[/name_u], [name_u]Everly[/name_u], [name_f]Leilani[/name_f], [name_u]Avery[/name_u], [name_m]Ryder[/name_m] etc. would be modern names.

Modern by definition is something that relates to the current time period without ties to the past, so naming wise I’d say it’s something that was recently invented. Something like [name_u]Jayden[/name_u] or Addalie are most certainly made-up and commonly used. I, personally, wouldn’t consider names like [name_u]Brinley[/name_u], [name_u]Brooklyn[/name_u], [name_m]Landon[/name_m], [name_u]Juniper[/name_u], [name_u]Avery[/name_u], [name_u]Madison[/name_u], etc. as “modern names” because they are all legitimate names and have been for a looong time, whether used as a first name or not. Surnames are still names whether they are on girls or boys, they aren’t “modern,” that’s like saying [name_u]James[/name_u] is a modern name just because a little girl has it.

I think names like [name_m]Jax[/name_m], [name_m]Deshawn[/name_m], [name_m]Kylan[/name_m], [name_f]Aubrielle[/name_f], Novalee, [name_f]Nevaeh[/name_f], [name_f]Lakeisha[/name_f], etc. are what qualify as “modern.” Other names may be used much more in this day and age than any other era but I wouldn’t classify them as unique to this time period necessarily.

I can definently see why trendy names are what most people consider modern!

I like the idea of the word modern but prefer thinking of it as names that have a fresh, sleek and slightly funky vibe rather than just “new”.

I tend to think of names like:

[name_u]Ruby[/name_u]
[name_f]Eve[/name_f]
[name_f]Zoe[/name_f]
[name_f]Isla[/name_f]
[name_f]Olive[/name_f]
[name_u]Arden[/name_u]
[name_u]Eden[/name_u]
[name_f]Lila[/name_f]

As modern names although most of these names have a history… very interesting!

This is how I think of it too. “Trendy” (in the NB sense) and “modern” are different to me — modern names are bold, sleek and tailored, with no unnecessary elaborations and no complicated spellings. The name version of Scandi chic furniture!

[name_u]Arden[/name_u]
[name_f]Afton[/name_f]
[name_u]Hadley[/name_u]
[name_f]Nova[/name_f]
[name_f]Clover[/name_f]
[name_u]Wren[/name_u]
[name_f]Luna[/name_f]
[name_u]Piper[/name_u]
[name_f]Willow[/name_f]
[name_u]Bay[/name_u]
[name_f]Aster[/name_f]
[name_f]Rumer[/name_f]
[name_u]Fifer[/name_u]
[name_f]Lark[/name_f]
[name_u]Ellis[/name_u]
[name_u]Hollis[/name_u]
[name_f]Vita[/name_f]
[name_f]Lila[/name_f]
[name_u]Blair[/name_u]
[name_f]Greer[/name_f]
[name_f]Maren[/name_f]
[name_f]Neve[/name_f]
[name_u]Quinn[/name_u]

Very few of these are actually “modern” in the sense of being recent coinages, but all have that vibe to me.
