Fabulous idea. I love talking about my favorite names (big surprise, I know).
GIRLS
[name]Sylvie[/name]: To me this is the perfect name. It has a gorgeous sound and a lovely meaning. It’s familiar enough not to sound bizarre, but it’s not in the Top 1000 and, though it does get love on Nameberry, I don’t think [name]Sylvie[/name] is in danger of becoming outrageously trendy. It’s also a name that transitions beautifully: sweet on a little girl, elegant on a young woman, etc. [name]Sylvie[/name] can be a doctor or an artist or even a truck driver. And have I mentioned how much I love the sound? [name]Sylvie[/name]. [name]Sylvie[/name]! Perfect.
[name]Eloise[/name]: A beautiful name with a strong history and literary associations in the form of [name]Kay[/name] [name]Thompson[/name]'s spunky [name]Eloise[/name], hellion of the Plaza. Like [name]Sylvie[/name], [name]Eloise[/name] is elegant, sophisticated, sweet, and transitions fabulously from age to age and profession to profession. It’s lovely to hear and lovely to say. The only drawback to [name]Eloise[/name] is its recent explosion in popularity. I fear that by the time I’m ready to have kids [name]Eloise[/name] will be in the Top 20. Sigh.
[name]Marigold[/name]: The sunniest, quirkiest, artsiest of nature names. Though [name]Marigold[/name] is doubtless more difficult to wear than [name]Sylvie[/name] or [name]Eloise[/name], the many nickname options ([name]Mari[/name], [name]Margo[/name], etc) make her a lot more versatile than she might first appear. Plus [name]Marigold[/name] was the name of the heroine of “[name]Magic[/name] for [name]Marigold[/name]”, one of my favorite childhood books. I’ve gotten double takes every time I’ve mentioned this name, but I love it.
[name]Jane[/name]: [name]Lovely[/name], simple, literary…but perhaps a little plain? I love [name]Jane[/name] paired with [name]Sylvie[/name]: [name]Sylvie[/name] [name]Jane[/name]. Perfect.
[name]Alice[/name]: [name]Alice[/name] is now where I’m afraid [name]Eloise[/name] will be in five years – trendy and trending up. And no wonder. Like [name]Jane[/name], [name]Alice[/name] is lovely, simple, and literary, but she’s even more substantial than [name]Jane[/name] and can definitely stand on her own.
[name]Lydia[/name]: Unlike the other names I’ve listed so far, [name]Lydia[/name] has no personal, familial, or literary significance for me. It’s just an amazingly gorgeous, elegant, sophisticated, timeless name. Unfortunately she’s also in the Top 100 and I can see her trending even higher. Sigh.
Other names I love: [name]Juniper[/name], [name]Willow[/name], [name]Margot[/name], [name]Gwendolyn[/name], [name]Mabel[/name], and [name]Geneva[/name].
BOYS
[name]Thaddeus[/name]: [name]Thaddeus[/name] just does not get enough love. This is such a fabulous name! [name]Thaddeus[/name] has a strong, handsome sound and a great history. I would use [name]Teddy[/name] as a nn (yes, I know it’s not accurate – creative license, okay?).
[name]Roscoe[/name]: [name]Roscoe[/name] is another one that should be way more popular than it is. It has a very modern, jazzy feel, and I love an -o ending. I love saying this name. [name]Roscoe[/name]! [name]Love[/name] it, love it, love it.
[name]Jasper[/name]: Oh, [name]Jasper[/name]. Why can’t I quit you? I love nature names, I love J-names…[name]Jasper[/name] is perfect. Unfortunately, unlike [name]Roscoe[/name] and [name]Thaddeus[/name], he’s hardly an undiscovered commodity. [name]Jasper[/name], like [name]Alice[/name], is officially trendy. Hopefully both [name]Jasper[/name] and [name]Alice[/name] will have cooled off somewhat by the time I’m ready to have kids.
[name]Charlie[/name]: Nameberry’s description is spot-on – this is the friendliest of names. Like [name]Jasper[/name], [name]Charlie[/name] is more popular than I’m comfortable with, but unlike [name]Jasper[/name], [name]Charlie[/name] has been popular forever. He’s timeless, charming, and terribly dapper. It’s impossible not to like [name]Charlie[/name].
Other names I love: [name]Atlas[/name], [name]Magnus[/name], [name]Wallace[/name], [name]Waldo[/name], [name]Elliot[/name], [name]August[/name], [name]Rafferty[/name], [name]Archer[/name], [name]Darwin[/name], [name]Jude[/name], [name]Hugo[/name], [name]Everett[/name]…I love boys’ names.
