What commonly used names have you never seen the appeal of?
I don’t mean the names that are way too popular to use but you otherwise would like, names that you don’t like or aren’t your taste but you’re actually more or less neutral about - neither, on the other end of the spectrum - obscure ugly names, or weird made-up atrocities.
I mean the names that just never feel right when you think of them, that always leave a weird aftertaste, that always make you wonder what it is that other people find attractive in them.
For me, these are:
[name_f]Barbara[/name_f] - The double “bar” sounds like someone gagging to me. I do like [name_f]Deirdre[/name_f].
[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] - [name_u]Love[/name_u] the spelling, but the long double “ee” is so harsh. For some reason it sounds mean to me. I do like [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u].
[name_f]Hannah[/name_f] - I like [name_f]Anna[/name_f], but [name_f]Hannah[/name_f] feels so clunky to me. Mostly in my head.
[name_f]Olivia[/name_f], [name_f]Olive[/name_f] - I just keep thinking of the colour olive, which is not pretty to me. I am a big fan of [name_f]Octavia[/name_f].
Now these are obviously fine names, and my feelings about them are completely ridiculous and baseless. But surely I’m not the only one who has these absurd prolonged adversities? I’m curious to see if you have them as well, and what they are?
[name_f]Adelaide[/name_f], [name_f]Matilda[/name_f], [name_f]Eulalia[/name_f] - they sound very dated to me but everyone on nb seems to love them
[name_f]Alice[/name_f], [name_f]Rose[/name_f], [name_f]Grace[/name_f], [name_f]Ann[/name_f], [name_f]Ella[/name_f], [name_f]Elle[/name_f], [name_f]Belle[/name_f], [name_u]James[/name_u], [name_m]John[/name_m]- I find them very boring
son names
boy names on girls, not unisex names that were once boy names only, but names like [name_u]Blake[/name_u] and [name_u]James[/name_u]
[name_f]Hazel[/name_f] and [name_f]Mabel[/name_f]–I know i’m supposed to like them, but to me they are unpretty old names that deserve to stay retired.
[name_f]Penelope[/name_f]/[name_f]Poppy[/name_f]/[name_f]Pippa[/name_f] any along this route
[name_f]Olive[/name_f]
[name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f]
[name_f]Martha[/name_f]
[name_f]Edith[/name_f]
[name_f]Matilda[/name_f]
[name_f]Winifred[/name_f]
[name_f]Paloma[/name_f] - I have tried and tried and tried and I just don’t get this one! It doesn’t sound pretty to my ear and there isn’t even a cute nickname. lol
Ooh, I’m with you on [name_m]Malachi[/name_m] and [name_f]Martha[/name_f].
[name_m]Malachi[/name_m] sounds like a sickness. I didn’t think of it because it’s a really uncommon name in the Netherlands, I don’t know anyone named [name_m]Malachi[/name_m]. And I only know one [name_f]Martha[/name_f].
[name_f]Clementine[/name_f]
[name_u]Wren[/name_u]
[name_f]Oona[/name_f]/[name_f]Una[/name_f]
[name_f]Arabella[/name_f]
[name_f]Bernice[/name_f]
[name_f]Cindy[/name_f] (just any name starting with the “sin” sound)
[name_f]Esmeralda[/name_f]
Chrisanthemum (is that how you spell it?)
[name_f]Lacey[/name_f]/[name_f]Laci[/name_f]
[name_f]Orchid[/name_f]
[name_f]Tulip[/name_f]
Styles of names:
Boy/unisex names on girls - hate the trend, and I just can’t understand the appeal of [name_u]James[/name_u], [name_u]Rowan[/name_u], [name_u]Ashley[/name_u] or [name_u]Madison[/name_u] on a girl.
‘Modern’ girl names - [name_u]Kennedy[/name_u], [name_f]Brynlee[/name_f], [name_f]Skylyn[/name_f], [name_f]Bryleigh[/name_f], [name_f]Journee[/name_f], [name_u]Scout[/name_u], [name_f]Meadow[/name_f], [name_u]Wynter[/name_u], [name_u]Paisley[/name_u]. I just… why?
Hyper masculine boy names - [name_m]Gunner[/name_m], [name_u]Jagger[/name_u], Brax, [name_m]Jett[/name_m], [name_m]Stone[/name_m], [name_m]Nash[/name_m] etc. They look silly on babies, and immature on adults.
Individual names:
[name_m]Cole[/name_m]/[name_m]Jole[/name_m]: There’s just something about these two that makes me think ‘dumb’.
[name_m]Tucker[/name_m]: What exactly are you tucking?
[name_m]Shepard[/name_m]: For a dog I think it’s cool, for anything else I just think it’s weird.
[name_f]Matilda[/name_f]: I love [name_f]Brunhilda[/name_f], but for some reason [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] rubs me the wrong way and I just don’t understand it.
[name_f]Chloe[/name_f]: I’ve always felt like it was a rather weak and babyish choice.
