I recently had a fantastic conversation with some of you about having a stubborn partner with name ideas that I don’t like.
This made me think of the use of the veto power. What are some names that you have vetoed and why?
Mine so far are;
Wanda (name of childhood neighbour who terrorised my family)
Donald (do I need to explain?)
Rudy (same reason)
Tiffany (again, same reason)
[name_f]Abigail[/name_f] (had a bully with this name which is a shame because I actually like)
[name_f]Emily[/name_f] (dime a dozen)
[name_u]Alex[/name_u] (also dime a dozen)
[name_m]Otto[/name_m] / [name_m]Otis[/name_m] (sounds funny)
[name_f]Natasha[/name_f]
[name_f]Natalie[/name_f]
[name_f]Jenna[/name_f]
[name_f]Violet[/name_f]
[name_f]Daisy[/name_f]
[name_f]Tabitha[/name_f]
[name_u]August[/name_u]
[name_m]Samuel[/name_m]
[name_m]William[/name_m]
Any name of an ex (obviously)
Most are due to personal associations, but not all.
No offence intended if you’ve used or love the following…
[name_m]Huckleberry[/name_m] - because it’s cute… on a dog. [name_f]Ethel[/name_f] - because I’m not giving birth to a 175 year old woman. [name_m]Ulysses[/name_m] - I like this but it’s just a little heroic for me. [name_f]Jessica[/name_f] - yawn …
[name_f]My[/name_f] husband has vetoed more of my suggestions than I have his, but it’s great that we also love a whole heap of the same names. [name_f]My[/name_f] vetoes:
[name_f]Lenore[/name_f] - I’m just not a big fan of the “nor” sound
Maya/Maia - I don’t dislike it, just want something a little more substantial and interesting
[name_f]Nina[/name_f] - same as above, though I will compromise on [name_f]Antonina[/name_f]
[name_m]Dwayne[/name_m] - ugh, just no
[name_u]Darryl[/name_u] - same, though I will compromise on [name_u]Dariel[/name_u]
We don’t have children, so I haven’t had to veto anything yet.
I certainly won’t be naming children after any ex-boyfriends though so names like [name_m]David[/name_m], [name_m]Christopher[/name_m], [name_m]Leon[/name_m], [name_m]Dennis[/name_m], [name_u]Michael[/name_u], [name_m]Quinton[/name_m] and [name_m]Jeremy[/name_m] and no-go zones for me. I’ll feel the same about any of SO’s exes too!
[name_m]Thor[/name_m] - just no
[name_m]Markus[/name_m] - Not for me, too plain
[name_m]Aleksander[/name_m] - Not a fan, too many [name_u]Alexes[/name_u] out there, and I had a student named [name_u]Alex[/name_u] that year who drove me nuts.
He vetoed -
[name_u]Harlow[/name_u] I LOVE this name
[name_u]Hartley[/name_u] - he said “Fartley”
[name_f]Carolina[/name_f] - I thought it would be a fun way to honor my MIL [name_f]Carol[/name_f]
Ripken “Rip” - I LOVE Yellowstone and baseball and thought this would be the best of both worlds. He isn’t sold on it.
[name_m]Ah[/name_m], we don’t really pull a strict veto deal because our son is both of ours and so we at least try to respect each other’s opinions.
There’s only one name I said no to, that I can remember. Well, it was a combo. [name_m]Peter[/name_m] [name_u]Parker[/name_u]. Obvious reasons, though I like [name_m]Peter[/name_m]. Simple enough solution= [name_m]Peter[/name_m] can go on our list but with a different middle name
[name_f]My[/name_f] SO and I are both name nerds, so our lists are endless We’ve named three children together, so we’ve vetoed quite some names in the process. These are some I can remember:
