I don’t get the appeal of [name_u]Madison[/name_u], [name_f]Emily[/name_f], or shudders [name_f]Nevaeh[/name_f] at all! There are some names I like that are popular now though like [name_f]Abigail[/name_f], [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], [name_f]Chloe[/name_f], and [name_u]Aubrey[/name_u].
[name_f]Emily[/name_f], [name_u]Madison[/name_u], [name_u]Avery[/name_u], [name_u]Aubrey[/name_u], [name_u]Addison[/name_u], [name_f]Grace[/name_f], [name_f]Hannah[/name_f], [name_u]Skylar[/name_u], [name_u]Reagan[/name_u], [name_u]Kennedy[/name_u], [name_f]Melanie[/name_f], [name_f]Faith[/name_f], [name_f]Hailey[/name_f], [name_f]Kaylee[/name_f], [name_f]Nevaeh[/name_f], [name_f]Savannah[/name_f], [name_f]Audrey[/name_f], [name_u]Taylor[/name_u], [name_u]Riley[/name_u], [name_f]Brianna[/name_f], [name_u]Peyton[/name_u], [name_u]Mackenzie[/name_u], [name_f]Makayla[/name_f], [name_f]Kayla[/name_f], [name_u]Allison[/name_u], [name_u]Brooklyn[/name_u], and [name_u]Genesis[/name_u] are all top 100 names I really don’t like at all from scanning the 2012 US list. Some of them I find ugly, some of them I find boring, and some I just plain dislike for no reason. The running theme here seems to be I don’t like most surname names now that I’m looking at my list. [name_f]Emma[/name_f], [name_f]Leah[/name_f], and [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] are okay but nms and while I don’t hate [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] it’s a little boring to me having known about gillion and four of them.
For me, it is:
[name_f]Isabella[/name_f]
[name_f]Ava[/name_f]
worst of all Unisex names on girls
Everything ending in -son for a girl - [name_u]Madison[/name_u], [name_u]Allison[/name_u], [name_u]Addison[/name_u], [name_u]Jamison[/name_u] (yes I know a girl named [name_u]Jamison[/name_u]!)
The wild love for making every name start with K! [name_f]Kylie[/name_f], [name_f]Kaylee[/name_f], [name_f]Khloe[/name_f], [name_f]Kayla[/name_f], [name_f]Kaitlyn[/name_f], [name_f]Kailyn[/name_f], [name_u]Kennedy[/name_u], [name_m]Koda[/name_m], [name_u]Kayden[/name_u]
Y’s everywhere. [name_f]Zoey[/name_f], [name_u]Jayden[/name_u], [name_f]Layla[/name_f], [name_f]Aaliyah[/name_f]
There are very few popular names that I can’t see any appeal to. Classic old names are lovely and popular for good reason.
I agree with all of the PPs. Personally, I find the -ella/-bella names to be a bit too overdone and over-the-top. [name_f]Isabella[/name_f], [name_f]Gabriella[/name_f], [name_f]Daniella[/name_f], etc.
I also find these mega-popular names to a bit bland: [name_f]Anna[/name_f], [name_f]Hannah[/name_f], [name_f]Sophie[/name_f]/a, [name_f]Bridget[/name_f], [name_u]Brooke[/name_u], [name_f]Leah[/name_f], [name_f]Claire[/name_f], [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], etc. I used to love [name_f]Olivia[/name_f], but the sheer popularity of it has ruined it for me.
I get sick of hearing [name_f]Emily[/name_f] over and over and over! It’s so overused. I don’t really see the appeal, either. [name_f]Sophia[/name_f]/fia is pretty overused, but I kind of like it.
For a lot of popular names, even if I wouldn’t use them I understand the appeal. But some of them I just don’t get, and they all get lumped into categories in my head:
-
The kute -kay names
I always think of them as “little sister” names because I was born in the mid-late 80s, and it seemed like everyone who had a sister born in the early 90s had one of these names:
[name_f]Kayla[/name_f]
[name_f]Kaylee[/name_f] (Oddly, the similar [name_f]Haylee[/name_f] in all its spellings, though NMS at all, is one where I can see what parents see in it )
[name_f]Kaya[/name_f]
[name_f]Mikayla[/name_f] ([name_f]Michaela[/name_f] doesn’t bother me though, even though it isn’t my style)
[name_f]Makenna[/name_f]/[name_f]McKenzie[/name_f]
[name_f]Kylie[/name_f]
[name_u]Kelsey[/name_u]
[name_f]Karly[/name_f]/[name_f]Carly[/name_f]
[name_f]Kaylynn[/name_f], any way you spell it. -
The Frilly A Names:
[name_f]Alyssa[/name_f], [name_f]Ariana[/name_f], [name_f]Alaina[/name_f], [name_f]Aliana[/name_f], [name_f]Aaliyah[/name_f], [name_f]Ayanna[/name_f], [name_f]Amaya[/name_f], etc. I guess I see why people like them individually, but they sort of all lump together into one lace-trimmed uni-name to me. Somehow, [name_f]Amelia[/name_f], [name_f]Amara[/name_f], [name_f]Amina[/name_f], and [name_f]Amira[/name_f] don’t end up in there - they feel distinctive. -
The braying BR- names:
[name_f]Bree[/name_f], [name_f]Brenna[/name_f], [name_f]Brynn[/name_f], [name_m]Brinlee[/name_m], Braelee, [name_f]Braylynn[/name_f]. Each one of these gets worse for me every time you add the suffix -lee or -lynn. I have a friend named [name_f]Brynne[/name_f] and I like it on her, but I don’t know why these are so overwhelmingly popular. -
The names I dislike for no good reason:
[name_u]Cheyenne[/name_u]. [name_f]Nevaeh[/name_f]. [name_f]Destiny[/name_f]. [name_u]Alexis[/name_u].
This, exactly. In particular, I can’t stand Br- names, and I don’t see the appeal at all.
Well, from the US top 100… [name_f]Aaliyah[/name_f], [name_f]Adalyn[/name_f], [name_u]Addison[/name_u], [name_f]Ava[/name_f], [name_u]Avery[/name_u], [name_u]Jordyn[/name_u], [name_f]Ellie[/name_f], [name_f]Kaelyn[/name_f], [name_f]Kaylee[/name_f] and [name_f]Makayla[/name_f]… there are so many beautiful, established girl names out there with so much meaning and history that I don’t know how someone could choose a made-up name like [name_f]Kaelyn[/name_f] tbh, especially when there are loads of Kaylas, Kaylees, Kylas, Kylies, Kaitlyns, Caitlyns etc. out there
[name_f]Amelia[/name_f], [name_f]Isabella[/name_f], [name_f]Olivia[/name_f], [name_f]Ava[/name_f], [name_f]Abigail[/name_f], [name_f]Chloe[/name_f], [name_f]Lily[/name_f], [name_f]Leah[/name_f], [name_f]Zoe[/name_f] and [name_u]Brooklyn[/name_u].
Oh and [name_f]Samantha[/name_f].
I know a family with 5 kids, all with Br- names.
Makes me shudder ![]()
[name_m]Just[/name_m] in my year we have about 5 or 6 Sophias, not to mention the Safiyyahs whose names are mispronounced as [name_f]Sophia[/name_f]. Everyone has to refer to them as ‘the one from (insert form)’ or ‘[name_f]Sophia[/name_f] X, Y or Z?’; I feel so sorry for them, and they were all named 16 years ago! We also have three Emilys, although surprisingly only 2 Emmas and 1 [name_f]Olivia[/name_f]!
Erm, I like a lot of the popular names, and the ones I don’t like, I don’t find overrated, honestly. What I do find overrated (lol) is a lot of the [name_u]Berry[/name_u] favorites–[name_f]Nora[/name_f], [name_f]Juliet[/name_f], [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] (I’ve grown to absolutely adore [name_f]Penelope[/name_f], but I used to hate it, haha!), [name_f]Eloise[/name_f], [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f], [name_f]Clementine[/name_f], [name_f]Lucy[/name_f], etc.! I really don’t care for any of them in general, and hearing them so much on these forums makes them almost to the point of eye-roll-inducing for me. They’re not bad names–I just don’t see the point! I love [name_f]Isabella[/name_f]/[name_f]Isabelle[/name_f], [name_f]Olivia[/name_f], [name_f]Emma[/name_f], [name_f]Lily[/name_f], etc., though. I wouldn’t use them all, but I still like them.
[name_f]Olivia[/name_f] (but I love [name_f]Alivia[/name_f]), [name_f]Mia[/name_f], [name_u]Madison[/name_u], [name_f]Natalie[/name_f], [name_f]Samantha[/name_f], [name_f]Aaliyah[/name_f], [name_f]Gabriella[/name_f] (but I love [name_f]Ella[/name_f]), [name_f]Nevaeh[/name_f], [name_u]Alexis[/name_u], and [name_f]Chloe[/name_f]/[name_f]Khloe[/name_f] for girls.
[name_u]Jayden[/name_u] ([name_u]Jadon[/name_u] is the CORRECT and Biblical spelling), [name_u]Aiden[/name_u] (C’mon people, it’s [name_u]Aidan[/name_u]! With an “A”!), [name_m]Joseph[/name_m], [name_u]Logan[/name_u] (this is all girl to me), [name_u]Ryan[/name_u], [name_m]Lucas[/name_m] (mucus?), [name_m]Landon[/name_m], [name_u]Jordan[/name_u], and [name_u]Tyler[/name_u] for boys.
for me, classics like [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u], [name_f]Audrey[/name_f], [name_f]Lillian[/name_f], [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], [name_f]Abigail[/name_f] & [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] won’t ever become overrated, but a lot of the names I went to school with are for me now;
[name_f]Carly[/name_f]
[name_u]Alexis[/name_u]
[name_f]Kayla[/name_f]
[name_f]Danielle[/name_f]
[name_u]Madison[/name_u] (ugh)
[name_f]Heather[/name_f] (although I am sort of liking it still)
[name_f]Kristen[/name_f]
[name_f]Samantha[/name_f]
[name_f]Emily[/name_f] (see [name_f]Heather[/name_f])
[name_f]Amanda[/name_f]
[name_f]Jennifer[/name_f]
[name_u]Ashley[/name_u] (I swear to god I know at least 30 now, all female)
[name_f]Kaylee[/name_f] (and it’s many, many, MANY variants)
[name_f]Hailey[/name_f]/[name_u]Haley[/name_u]
[name_u]Lindsey[/name_u]
[name_u]Taylor[/name_u]
[name_f]Ashlyn[/name_f]
[name_f]Victoria[/name_f]
[name_u]Shannon[/name_u]
[name_u]Mackenzie[/name_u]
[name_f]Sarah[/name_f]
[name_f]Kaitlyn[/name_f] (and the 10,000 spelling variants it has)
[name_f]Jade[/name_f]
[name_u]Brooke[/name_u]/[name_u]Brooklyn[/name_u]/[name_f]Brooklin[/name_f]
[name_f]Megan[/name_f]/[name_f]Meghan[/name_f]
[name_f]Kylie[/name_f]
[name_u]Jaime[/name_u]
[name_f]Melissa[/name_f]
I don’t know how popular they all are, but I don’t get the appeal of [name_f]Chloe[/name_f], [name_f]Isabella[/name_f] (or [name_f]Isobel[/name_f]), [name_f]Alice[/name_f], [name_f]Matilda[/name_f], [name_u]Mackenzie[/name_u], or any of the [name_u]Kay[/name_u] names ([name_f]Kaylee[/name_f], [name_u]Kayden[/name_u], etc). I also don’t like the older names making a comeback, like [name_f]Estelle[/name_f], [name_f]Edith[/name_f], [name_f]Edna[/name_f], [name_f]Agnes[/name_f], etc.
Hate [name_f]Emily[/name_f]… hate [name_u]Madison[/name_u]… hate [name_m]Declan[/name_m]…
I think I only really like around 5-7 names from US Top 100, I just don’t care for the rest, buuut there are a few that I just absolutely can’t stand:
[name_u]Madison[/name_u]/[name_f]Madelyn[/name_f] (I can tolerate [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] when it’s spelled correctly.)
[name_u]Avery[/name_u]
[name_u]Aubrey[/name_u]/[name_f]Aubree[/name_f]
[name_f]Natalie[/name_f]
[name_f]Samantha[/name_f]
[name_u]Brooklyn[/name_u]
[name_f]Nevaeh[/name_f]
[name_u]Riley[/name_u]
[name_u]Bailey[/name_u]
[name_f]Trinity[/name_f]
[name_u]London[/name_u]
[name_f]Lydia[/name_f]
[name_u]Andrea[/name_u]
I get: - While I don’t get:
[name_f]Sophia[/name_f] - [name_f]Sophie[/name_f]
[name_f]Emma[/name_f] - [name_f]Emily[/name_f]
[name_f]Isobel[/name_f] - [name_f]Isabella[/name_f]
And others that I can’t fathom or are just “meh”:
[name_f]Abigail[/name_f]
[name_f]Mia[/name_f]
[name_u]Madison[/name_u]
[name_f]Chloe[/name_f]
[name_u]Taylor[/name_u]
[name_u]Riley[/name_u]
[name_f]Amelia[/name_f]
[name_f]Leah[/name_f]
[name_u]Harper[/name_u]
[name_f]Kaylee[/name_f]
[name_f]Samantha[/name_f]
Out of the [name_u]Berry[/name_u] favorites, I can’t sympathize with any from the top ten girls list, save [name_f]Claire[/name_f].
[name_f]Ava[/name_f], [name_f]Olivia[/name_f], [name_f]Ella[/name_f], [name_f]Emily[/name_f], [name_f]Emma[/name_f], [name_f]Isabella[/name_f], [name_f]Sophia[/name_f], [name_f]Mia[/name_f], [name_f]Grace[/name_f], [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], [name_u]Aubrey[/name_u], and any spelling of [name_f]Kaylee[/name_f]! I hate boy names on girls too (ie. [name_u]James[/name_u], [name_m]Adam[/name_m]- yes there are girls being named these) but I love unisex names like [name_u]Avery[/name_u], [name_u]Eliot[/name_u], and [name_u]Ryan[/name_u]! Maybe it’s because I’m young but I like trendy names. I hate overused names and would drop a favorite name of mine in a heartbeat if it was in the top 5.
