…for your favourite names? I know some Berries (me included) wouldn’t use nicknames at all, but I’m interested in what you’d use if you had to. [name_m]Even[/name_m] ones that aren’t intuitive or immediately obvious. If I had to, I’d use these, and btw, I tend to match the spelling of the nn to the full name, hence some of the slightly weird nn spellings.
[name_f]Pandora[/name_f] nn Panda or [name_f]Ora[/name_f]/[name_f]Aura[/name_f]
[name_f]Evanthe[/name_f] nn [name_f]Evie[/name_f] (Ee-vee)
[name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] nn [name_f]Trixie[/name_f]
[name_f]Phaedra[/name_f] nn Phae
[name_f]Arabella[/name_f] nn [name_u]Ari[/name_u] (never [name_f]Bella[/name_f], maybe [name_f]Belle[/name_f])
Perenna nn [name_f]Enna[/name_f]
[name_m]Caspian[/name_m] nn Cip (Pn. [name_m]Kip[/name_m]) or Caspi (I don’t like any other options)
[name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] nn Phin
[name_m]Ptolemy[/name_m] nn Lemy
[name_m]Lorenzo[/name_m] nn [name_m]Enzo[/name_m]
[name_m]Nikolai[/name_m] nn [name_u]Niko[/name_u]
[name_m]Evander[/name_m] nn Ev (pn. like beverage)
And, just in general, what nicknames (or names you consider as nicknames) do you like? I like (though some can be stand alone names):
[name_f]Fae[/name_f] ([name_f]Phaedra[/name_f], [name_f]Theophania[/name_f])
[name_f]Trixie[/name_f] ([name_f]Beatrix[/name_f], [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f])
[name_f]Tabby[/name_f] ([name_f]Tabitha[/name_f], I like cats :P)
[name_u]Mattie[/name_u] ([name_f]Matilda[/name_f])
[name_f]Tilda[/name_f] ([name_f]Matilda[/name_f])
[name_f]Cleo[/name_f] (Cleophée or [name_f]Cleopatra[/name_f], I prefer [name_f]Clio[/name_f] as a stand alone name)
Caddy (Cadmium, first heard this on an audio tape)
[name_f]Fia[/name_f] ([name_f]Fiammetta[/name_f])
[name_f]Lena[/name_f] ([name_f]Magdalena[/name_f])
Cress ([name_f]Cressida[/name_f])
Saffy ([name_f]Saffron[/name_f])
[name_f]Ginny[/name_f] ([name_f]Genevieve[/name_f], maybe [name_f]Guinevere[/name_f])
[name_u]Finn[/name_u]
[name_m]Archie[/name_m] (So adorable, and I’m so in love; blame [name_m]Sherlock[/name_m] :P)
[name_m]Eon[/name_m] ([name_m]Gideon[/name_m])
[name_m]Enzo[/name_m] ([name_m]Lorenzo[/name_m], [name_m]Fiorenzo[/name_m], [name_m]Kenzo[/name_m])
[name_f]Indie[/name_f] ([name_f]Indigo[/name_f])
Auggie ([name_u]August[/name_u], but I dread to think if it’s said with soft gs)
[name_f]Dae[/name_f] ([name_m]Daedalus[/name_m], [name_m]Amadeus[/name_m])
[name_u]Win[/name_u] ([name_m]Edwin[/name_m], [name_m]Oswin[/name_m])
[name_m]Leo[/name_m] (pn. [name_m]LAY[/name_m]-o)
We plan on using [name_m]Mack[/name_m] as a nn for [name_m]McCoy[/name_m]. [name_u]Everett[/name_u] is also on our list and I like the nn [name_m]Rhett[/name_m].
[name_u]Finn[/name_u]
[name_m]Enzo[/name_m]
[name_u]Nico[/name_u], I prefer this spelling
Ev
[name_f]Indie[/name_f]
[name_m]Leo[/name_m], Love but NOT your pronunciation
Right now I can’t think of any nicknames I like for my favorite names. As I don’t plan on using them until it comes naturally. I don’t like the fact that some people MUST force the idea of a nickname on a child when he/she hasn’t even been born yet especially since nicknames change ever so often for various reasons. I do LOVE [name_f]Millie[/name_f], but hate [name_f]Millicent[/name_f] (it’s so old and grama-y) though.
[name_f]My[/name_f] problem is that I’m more used to hearing boys go by nns and girls be called terms of endearment (sweetheart, honey, etc.) I also see nicknames as a name a person goes by most of the time instead of their formal name, which I wouldn’t do. I would maybe use a nn just like a pet name/term of endearment (use the given name most of the time and occasionally the nn/petname).
[name_f]Colette[/name_f] nn [name_u]Coley[/name_u] or [name_f]Letty[/name_f]
[name_f]Felicity[/name_f] nn Lissy
[name_m]Erik[/name_m] nn E (I’ve found that guys have no problem going by their first initial or last name and that’s the only way I think I’d have a nn for [name_m]Erik[/name_m])
[name_m]Graham[/name_m] nn G or [name_m]Bram[/name_m] (I know it’s weird but I like [name_m]Bram[/name_m] but not [name_m]Abram[/name_m])
[name_m]Alexander[/name_m] nn [name_m]Aleksei[/name_m]/[name_m]Alexei[/name_m]
[name_m]Gabriel[/name_m] nn [name_m]Gabe[/name_m] or [name_m]Gable[/name_m]
[name_m]Finnegan[/name_m] or [name_m]Griffin[/name_m] nn [name_u]Finn[/name_u]
Most likely, I would just use terms of endearment instead of nicknames. I do like names and nicknames that end in an “e” sound.
I like the nickname [name_m]Mack[/name_m] for [name_u]Morgan[/name_u] [name_m]Zachary[/name_m]. Smash [name_u]Morgan[/name_u] and [name_m]Zack[/name_m] together and ta dad, [name_m]Mack[/name_m]! It may be a stretch but I’d use it as a family only nickname and have him go by [name_u]Morgan[/name_u] at school and such.
I like these natural nicknames: [name_u]Cam[/name_u] for [name_u]Cameron[/name_u], [name_u]Josie[/name_u] for [name_f]Josephine[/name_f], [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] for [name_f]Lucille[/name_f], [name_m]Zander[/name_m] for [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] and [name_f]Mia[/name_f], [name_f]Mila[/name_f] or [name_f]Emmy[/name_f] for [name_f]Emilia[/name_f].
I like [name_u]Dani[/name_u] for [name_f]Miranda[/name_f]. It’s not as natural as [name_f]Mandy[/name_f], [name_u]Randi[/name_u], or [name_f]Andi[/name_f], but I think it’s still usable. All the letters are there for it if you switch them around.
[name_u]Rory[/name_u] as a nickname for [name_f]Nora[/name_f] is cute and spunky. It’s not a natural nickname but the sound is there I think.
Someone asked about [name_m]Ian[/name_m] as a nickname for [name_m]Killian[/name_m] and I really like that a lot too!
I love nicknames! Where I’m from, everyone has nicknames and it’s lovely [name_m]Both[/name_m] my husband and I go by a nickname, and all our siblings do too.
[name_f]My[/name_f] favourite names with nicknames:
[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]- [name_u]Charlie[/name_u]
[name_f]Matilda[/name_f]- [name_u]Mattie[/name_u]
[name_f]Adelaide[/name_f]- [name_f]Ada[/name_f]
[name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]- [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] or [name_f]Eliza[/name_f]
[name_f]Florence[/name_f]- [name_f]Flora[/name_f] or [name_f]Flossie[/name_f]
[name_f]Evangeline[/name_f]- [name_f]Evie[/name_f]
[name_f]Harriet[/name_f]- [name_f]Ettie[/name_f] or [name_f]Etta[/name_f]
Most of my favourite boy names are shorter so I don’t currently have any nicknames for them.
I was going to list my preferred nickname for all the names on my current favourite list but found it really hard since most of them are two syllables and I don’t believe names with only two syllables need nicknames, especially not when they only have four letters…
Taking just the longer ones:
Everild - Ever or Eve maybe even Edda, for the Old Norse Poetic Edda. It’s also a name meaning ‘great grandmother’ which I really like.
Nimue - Nim
Anaïs - Ana or Ann
Ophelia - Phae or Lia. Would Opal be too much of a stretch? I love Opal.
Lileas - Lily or Lys. (Lys is the Norwegian word for light, so I love that connection)
Persephone - Posy? I think that may be too sweet in the long run, Poe fits the name better. Maybe Persis
Ambrose - Bram or Bo, maybe Ames or Ari, but Ambrose only has two syllables so probably no nickname.
Orpheus - Oz? Maybe Ori but I don’t like it.
Leonidas - Leo I guess. It’s not very creative, but I like Leo.
Orion - Rye? I like Rye Or maybe Ori again, but I still don’t like it.
Nicknames I love would be Nell and Ned. For Helena or Penelope and Edmund espectively. I also love Ike, I’ve been trying it on for Iskandar
I once came across Sankin as a nickname for Samson, I really like that.
[name_m]Theobald[/name_m]/[name_m]Thaddeus[/name_m] nn [name_m]Ted[/name_m]
[name_m]Abraham[/name_m] nn [name_m]Abe[/name_m]/[name_m]Bram[/name_m]
[name_m]Abel[/name_m] nn [name_m]Abe[/name_m]
[name_m]Raphael[/name_m] nn Raph/[name_u]Rafe[/name_u]
[name_m]Isaac[/name_m] nn [name_m]Ike[/name_m]
[name_m]Walter[/name_m] nn [name_m]Walt[/name_m]
[name_f]Celia[/name_f] nn Cee/[name_f]Lia[/name_f]
[name_f]Amity[/name_f] nn [name_f]Amy[/name_f]
[name_f]Geneva[/name_f] nn [name_f]Genny[/name_f]/[name_f]Ginny[/name_f]
[name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f] nn [name_f]Gwen[/name_f]
[name_f]Annika[/name_f] nn [name_f]Annie[/name_f]
I would be in trouble if I had to come up with a nickname for each of my favorites (especially my boys’ names). I guess I would have to use middle names also.
I like my favourite names in their full form and I would use them that way, although I’m sure I would shorten them or use nicknames sometimes.
The ones I like are:
[name_f]Catherine[/name_f] - Cath, [name_f]Katie[/name_f]
[name_f]Eve[/name_f] - [name_f]Evie[/name_f]
[name_f]Serena[/name_f] - [name_f]Rina[/name_f], [name_f]Nina[/name_f]
[name_m]Jared[/name_m] - [name_u]Red[/name_u]
[name_m]Ciaran[/name_m] - [name_m]Keir[/name_m]
[name_m]Roderick[/name_m] - [name_m]Roddy[/name_m] (this is the only one I’d use all the time)
[name_u]Calder[/name_u] - Col
[name_f]My[/name_f] favourite names and their nicknames:
[name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] nn [name_f]Bea[/name_f], [name_f]Trixie[/name_f]
[name_f]Clementine[/name_f] nn [name_f]Mintie[/name_f] (home only nn), [name_f]Cleo[/name_f], [name_f]Emmy[/name_f]
[name_f]Penelope[/name_f] nn [name_f]Polly[/name_f], [name_f]Poppy[/name_f]
[name_f]Helena[/name_f] nn [name_f]Nell[/name_f]
[name_f]Eloise[/name_f] nn [name_f]Lola[/name_f]
[name_f]Cecilia[/name_f] nn Cici
[name_f]Margo[/name_f] nn [name_f]Meg[/name_f]
[name_m]Lysander[/name_m] nn [name_m]Zander[/name_m]
[name_m]Caspian[/name_m] nn [name_m]Kip[/name_m], [name_m]Cap[/name_m]
[name_m]Arthur[/name_m] nn [name_m]Hart[/name_m]
[name_m]Edmund[/name_m] nn [name_m]Eddie[/name_m], [name_u]Teddy[/name_u]
[name_u]August[/name_u] nn [name_u]Gus[/name_u]
[name_m]Felix[/name_m] nn [name_m]Fox[/name_m]
[name_u]Abbott[/name_u] - [name_m]Bud[/name_m] or [name_m]Buddy[/name_m], maybe [name_m]Al[/name_m] if I used Abbott Lionel
[name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] - Lady
[name_m]Alastair[/name_m] - [name_m]Al[/name_m] or [name_m]Lester[/name_m] (but spelled different)
[name_f]Alexandra[/name_f] - [name_f]Lux[/name_f] or [name_u]Lex[/name_u]
[name_m]Christopher[/name_m] - [name_m]Chip[/name_m] or [name_u]Kit[/name_u]
[name_m]Dominic[/name_m] - [name_m]Dom[/name_m] or [name_u]Nico[/name_u]
[name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]/[name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f] - [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] or [name_f]Lisbet[/name_f]
[name_f]Fiona[/name_f] - [name_f]Ona[/name_f] (Oh-na)
[name_m]Malcolm[/name_m] - [name_u]Mal[/name_u] or [name_m]Colm[/name_m]
[name_f]Scarlett[/name_f] - [name_u]Scout[/name_u]
[name_m]Tobias[/name_m] - [name_u]Toby[/name_u] (I like both enough to just use [name_u]Toby[/name_u] by itself)
[name_f]Victoria[/name_f]/Viktoriya - [name_f]Vika[/name_f]
And, just in general, what nicknames (or names you consider as nicknames) do you like?
[name_u]Ari[/name_u]
[name_f]Eve[/name_f]
[name_f]Keri[/name_f]
[name_f]Lana[/name_f] - It’s in some other names like [name_f]Alana[/name_f] and [name_f]Svetlana[/name_f], but it definitely can stand alone
[name_f]Lena[/name_f] - I find this is more of a stand alone name, but it is in other names.
[name_m]Leo[/name_m]
[name_m]Mack[/name_m] - I just really love the sound of it by itself.)
[name_m]Rhett[/name_m]
[name_m]Trent[/name_m] - I like this and I feel like it’s long version is [name_m]Trenton[/name_m].
[name_f]Vera[/name_f] - Shortened from [name_f]Verona[/name_f] or [name_f]Veronica[/name_f]
[name_m]Yuri[/name_m]/[name_m]Uri[/name_m]
[name_m]Zander[/name_m]
I adore nicknames but I generally seem to have them for my favourite girls names…
[name_f]Matilda[/name_f] - I love the idea of [name_u]Mattie[/name_u], [name_f]Tillie[/name_f] and [name_f]Millie[/name_f]. All are super cute!
[name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] - [name_f]Bea[/name_f] is an adorable nickname, while [name_f]Trixie[/name_f] is growing on me.
[name_f]Clementine[/name_f] - I wish [name_f]Tiny[/name_f] would work as a nickname but that would completely depend upon the child! I like [name_f]Minnie[/name_f] too.
[name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] - Not keen on [name_f]Addie[/name_f] at all but would more than likely use Lady as a nickname.
[name_f]Harriet[/name_f] - [name_f]Hattie[/name_f] but obviously not if I used [name_u]Mattie[/name_u] as a nickname for [name_f]Matilda[/name_f].
[name_u]Winter[/name_u] - [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] is just adorable.
As for boy’s names I really only have [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] with the nickname [name_u]Teddy[/name_u]! I do like [name_m]Ezekiel[/name_m], nickname [name_m]Zeke[/name_m] and [name_m]Zac[/name_m] for [name_m]Zachary[/name_m].
I’m not the biggest fan of nicknames…I’ve always liked that my own name ([name_f]Claire[/name_f]) has no real nicknames. But, I think that with some names, nicknames are inevitable, so in those cases it’s best to encourage one nickname over another (like [name_u]Win[/name_u] instead of [name_m]Ed[/name_m] for [name_m]Edwin[/name_m], for instance).
[name_f]My[/name_f] favourite nicknames:
[name_f]Beatrix[/name_f]…[name_f]Bea[/name_f] or [name_f]Trixie[/name_f]
[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]…[name_f]Nora[/name_f]
[name_f]Adelaide[/name_f]…[name_f]Ada[/name_f] or Lady
[name_f]Cordelia[/name_f]…[name_f]Della[/name_f] or [name_f]Dilly[/name_f]
[name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f]…[name_f]Betsey[/name_f] or Lissy
[name_f]Felicity[/name_f]…Lissy
[name_u]Meredith[/name_u]…[name_f]Edie[/name_f] or [name_u]Red[/name_u]
[name_f]Edith[/name_f]…[name_f]Edie[/name_f]
Ferderick…[name_u]Freddie[/name_u] or [name_u]Red[/name_u]
[name_m]Edwin[/name_m]/[name_m]Winston[/name_m]…[name_u]Win[/name_u]
[name_m]Calvin[/name_m]/[name_m]Callum[/name_m]…[name_u]Cal[/name_u]
[name_m]Desmond[/name_m]…[name_m]Des[/name_m]
I think people on nameberry are too obsessed with finding the perfect nickname for the names they chose. I think the beauty of nicknames is that they come naturally as the child develops their personality. Nevertheless I like the following nicknames:
[name_f]Esmeralda[/name_f] - [name_f]Esme[/name_f]
[name_u]Demeter[/name_u] - [name_f]Demi[/name_f]
[name_f]Emmanuelle[/name_f] - haven’t found one I really like
[name_f]Delphina[/name_f]/[name_f]Delphine[/name_f] - [name_f]Delphi[/name_f]
[name_f]Rafaella[/name_f]/[name_f]Samuella[/name_f] - [name_f]Ella[/name_f]
[name_f]Valentina[/name_f] - [name_m]Lenny[/name_m]
Also like [name_u]Alfie[/name_u], [name_m]Ernie[/name_m], [name_u]Reggie[/name_u], [name_u]Freddie[/name_u], [name_m]Leo[/name_m], [name_u]Rue[/name_u] and Elf/[name_f]Elfie[/name_f]/[name_f]Elva[/name_f].
I’m big on nicknames! I have a full name and a nn. Plus my full name lends itself to a lot of nickname options, so some close friends/family have given me their own special nicknames. I just love how many options it gives me. Many nicknames fit my style (which I would describe as quirky vintage), but I want to give my child the same type of options. I use my full name professionally for example.
From your list the nicknames I would use…
[name_f]Pandora[/name_f] nn Panda or [name_f]Ora[/name_f]/[name_f]Aura[/name_f] - [name_u]Dory[/name_u] (This is on my list for [name_f]Isadora[/name_f]/[name_f]Dorothea[/name_f]/[name_u]Dorian[/name_u], but sadly I think Finding [name_m]Nemo[/name_m]/Finding [name_u]Dory[/name_u] has probably ruined that. [name_u]Andy[/name_u] for a girl is sort of a GP. Shhh, don’t tell.
[name_f]Evanthe[/name_f] nn [name_f]Evie[/name_f] (Ee-vee) - Would pronounce Eh-vee
[name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] nn [name_f]Trixie[/name_f] - Same
[name_f]Phaedra[/name_f] nn Phae - Same
[name_f]Arabella[/name_f] nn [name_u]Ari[/name_u] (never [name_f]Bella[/name_f], maybe [name_f]Belle[/name_f]) - Same
Perenna nn [name_f]Enna[/name_f] - [name_u]Renny[/name_u] (This is on my list for [name_f]Renata[/name_f])
[name_m]Caspian[/name_m] nn Cip (Pn. [name_m]Kip[/name_m]) or Caspi (I don’t like any other options) - I would use [name_u]Cass[/name_u]. [name_m]Kip[/name_m] is on my list for [name_m]Kipling[/name_m].
[name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] nn Phin - Not sure, mabye [name_f]Nix[/name_f]
[name_m]Ptolemy[/name_m] nn Lemy - Tolly
[name_m]Lorenzo[/name_m] nn [name_m]Enzo[/name_m] - Same. This is on my list. I also have [name_u]Renny[/name_u] and Renly as nn options.
[name_m]Nikolai[/name_m] nn [name_u]Niko[/name_u] - Same
[name_m]Evander[/name_m] nn Ev (pn. like beverage) - [name_u]Van[/name_u]
Other names you mentioned that are on my list
[name_f]Phaedra[/name_f] (No nn) - I like [name_f]Faye[/name_f], but not the spelling change required and don’t like the way Phae looks.
[name_f]Matilda[/name_f], nn [name_f]Tildy[/name_f]/[name_f]Tilly[/name_f]
[name_f]Cleo[/name_f] - I go back and forth between whether I this would stand alone or I would use it as a nn for [name_f]Clementine[/name_f].
[name_f]Magdalena[/name_f], nn [name_f]Maggie[/name_f]
[name_f]Genevieve[/name_f], nn [name_f]Neva[/name_f]
[name_f]Guinevere[/name_f], nn [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] - But would probably use [name_f]Winola[/name_f] to get to [name_f]Winnie[/name_f]
[name_m]Archie[/name_m] ([name_m]Archer[/name_m])
[name_m]Gideon[/name_m] - No Nickname!
[name_f]Indy[/name_f] ([name_f]Indira[/name_f]) - for a girl, obviously
[name_u]August[/name_u], nn [name_u]Gus[/name_u]
[name_m]Leo[/name_m] ([name_m]Leander[/name_m]) - [name_u]Lee[/name_u] o
[name_m]Just[/name_m] a few of my other favorites
[name_u]Arley[/name_u] ([name_f]Arletta[/name_f])
Ceeley/[name_f]Celie[/name_f]/Ceely ([name_f]Cecelia[/name_f])
[name_f]Edie[/name_f] ([name_f]Elodie[/name_f])
[name_f]Flory[/name_f] ([name_f]Florencia[/name_f]/[name_f]Floriana[/name_f]/[name_u]Florian[/name_u])
Francy ([name_f]Francesca[/name_f])
[name_u]Jory[/name_u] ([name_f]Jordana[/name_f]/[name_f]Marjorie[/name_f])
[name_f]Lettie[/name_f] ([name_f]Scarlett[/name_f]/[name_f]Arletta[/name_f]/[name_f]Colette[/name_f])
[name_f]Lottie[/name_f] ([name_f]Loretta[/name_f])
