What are some names that people seem to love and you don’t understand why?
Two of mine are:
~ [name_f]Iris[/name_f], because it makes me think of the part of the eye rather than the flower
~ [name_f]Stella[/name_f], because it makes me think of [name_f]Stella[/name_f] Artois, a beer popularly known in [name_m]Britain[/name_m] as the “wife beater” beer because of its high alcohol content and perceived connection with aggression and binge drinking
The sounds of both names are beautiful, but I clearly don’t have good connotations with either!
Right now, it’s [name_f]Gracelynn[/name_f]. It is a mega-popular name in my area. I have to use my toes to count the number of them I know or know of. Really, it isn’t that bad of a name. I find [name_f]Grace[/name_f] to be a sweet and stunning name on its own. I’m not a fan of tacking -lynn on the end of various names, but it is still pretty enough. I am mostly just shocked at how popular it is.
In terms of the names I just can’t get on board with, it isn’t that I don’t understand why they’re popular. It’s more because I have a negative personal association that I just can’t get over. [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] was the name of a person that was particularly cruel in my early life, and as was [name_f]Emma[/name_f].
[name_f]Chloe[/name_f]. Awful, awful association with every single [name_f]Chloe[/name_f] I’ve ever come across. It’s forever tainted for me.
I can’t really think of anymore. I understand why popular names are popular, they’re pretty, and there’s a lot I’ve never name my child, but I can see why they’re popular.
[name_f]Grace[/name_f] -honestly I can’t understand why people love it so much. People genuinely tell me that it’s a lovely name, but to me it sounds so harsh and bland. It lacks nickname potential and just comes off as flat and dull.
I’ve heard this name a lot recently and it’s [name_m]Grayson[/name_m], I just don’t find it appealing.
I also agree about adding [name_u]Lynn[/name_u] to alot of names which has become abit of a trend for me it does not make them cuter or add anything.
The name [name_f]Emily[/name_f] whilst being ok has bad associations for me too.
The name [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] also for the above reason although I like the name it’s forever tainted for me.
Almost every single one. Zoe. Chloe. Emma. McKenzie. Emma. Olivia. Emily. I could go on and on. Those names don’t end with the letter A (excluding Emma and Olivia) and just aren’t frilly, which is why I dislike them. With the names Emma and Olivia, I don’t dislike them, I just have really bad associations. Every Emma I have ever met was blonde with blue eyes and very annoying. It’s a very white name to me, if that makes sense. Olivia reminds me of the Olivia Jade scandal. I also dislike most of the Nameberry favorites, along with unisex names.
I know it isn’t actually popular in the top 10 way, but I get so annoyed when literally everyone on here suggests [name_u]Wren[/name_u]. I just don’t find it to be an attractive name, and the other thing that bugs me is that almost no one seems to actually add it to their lists. Stop suggesting it to everyone!
Sorry for my controversial opinion but it has to be said!
Oh gosh almost all them. I’ll skip the ones I’m simply bored with because that would take forever. [name_f]Grace[/name_f]. [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] and [name_m]Oliver[/name_m]. [name_u]Paisley[/name_u]. And [name_u]Scout[/name_u]. Oh and [name_f]Lucy[/name_f]- I love [name_f]Lucinda[/name_f] and [name_f]Lucille[/name_f] but [name_f]Lucy[/name_f], even as a nn makes me cringe.
I will never understand McKenzie/[name_u]Mackenzie[/name_u]. For most names, I can at least comprehend why people choose them, but this one just sounds so unattractive to me.
[name_u]Flynn[/name_u] - [name_m]Just[/name_m] a personal taste thing. To me seems like it would fit better as girls name than a boys name. I also just think the sound is ugly.
[name_u]Paisley[/name_u] - I hate the pattern. And for some reason it makes me think of Pugsley the fat kid in the Addams family.
I’ve just googled the top 10 babies names in [name_f]England[/name_f], because the names I think of as “popular” are for people my age, so not current. So here are the ones in the top 10 boys and girls lists that I’m not a fan of
[name_m]Harry[/name_m] and [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] - I don’t mind them, other than how common they are.
[name_m]George[/name_m] - sounds very rough. I have no doubt this is because of [name_m]Prince[/name_m] [name_m]George[/name_m], but it just seems like a rugby player name to me
[name_u]Noah[/name_u] - very biblical, and very American
[name_m]Jack[/name_m] - very dull
[name_m]Jacob[/name_m] - I don’t mind this name. Not exactly my style, but not bad
[name_m]Leo[/name_m] - I like the sound, I’m just not really a fan of names that can’t have nicknames. It feels like it’s a nickname.
[name_m]Oscar[/name_m] and [name_u]Charlie[/name_u] - not horrendous
[name_m]Muhammad[/name_m] - not really surprised, but I’m really not a fan of people who give their child the same first name as the parent.
[name_f]Olivia[/name_f] - bad connotations for me
[name_f]Amelia[/name_f] - pretty name, just very common
[name_f]Isla[/name_f] and [name_f]Ava[/name_f] - not too bad, but again lack the ability to be shortened
[name_f]Emily[/name_f] - seems very plain
[name_f]Isabella[/name_f] - I don’t mind this name, other than how popular it is.
[name_f]Mia[/name_f] - too short
[name_f]Poppy[/name_f] - I actually quite like this name. Must be quite new to popularity, as it hasn’t bothered me
[name_f]Ella[/name_f] - pretty, but again can’t be shortened. I like [name_f]Ella[/name_f] as a middle name though
[name_f]Lily[/name_f] - not really a fan, and I’m not sure why, since I like [name_f]Poppy[/name_f]
[name_f]Olivia[/name_f] ~ I don’t like the ‘olive’ sound. I think of the food immediately. I also really don’t understand why anyone would want to name their daughter [name_f]Olive[/name_f]. To me, it would be like naming them Tomato or Raisin.
[name_f]Violet[/name_f] ~ Sounds too much like the word ‘violent’.
It’s probably because I’m old enough to remember these names on many of my friends’s grandmothers that I can’t get behind–with several exceptions–the “old lady” name revival. It’s a generational thing. Some of these names had connotations back then that they probably don’t have today. [name_f]Pearl[/name_f], for example was either a hillbilly or a frumpy grandma. [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] was a bit of a stripper name. I have to admit that I still think of these connotations when i hear names like that.

And [name_f]Fern[/name_f] was always the name given to the unattractive friend.
I’m honestly not a big fan of the trend where everyone seems to misspell names on purpose–for example adding an extra -y or -h or the suffix -lynne onto any name you can think of. I know a little girl who just started kindergarten and her name is Bradynne, I know another little girl named Connyr. I just don’t understand it–if you’re already giving your daughter a traditionally masculine name, like [name_m]Braden[/name_m] or [name_m]Connor[/name_m], I don’t get why you would want to radically misspell it like that. [name_m]Just[/name_m] my opinion.
It’s probably because I’m a name nerd but a lot of popular names seem dull and overused to me. [name_m]Jack[/name_m] might have sounded fresh and original 20+ years ago when Titanic was popular but in 2019 I’m genuinely surprised it’s still a top 5 name.
Agreed, then there’s [name_m]Jackson[/name_m], many of whom go by [name_m]Jack[/name_m]. I personally tend to look for foreign variants of these names, they have a sense of familiarity but also feel fresher. Instead of [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], why not the Italian [name_f]Elisabetta[/name_f]?
I’m a picky person when it comes to names so there are too many to list. However, [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f]/[name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] are two names that i cannot seem to warm up to no matter how hard i try. For boys, any of the “ayden” ending names. jayden, cayden, etc.
