What to do when you’re stuck!?!

I have a something written, not a story exactly, just a scene. I think it could develop into a story, but I don’t know where to go with it. What do you do when you’re stuck?
thanks!!

  • ignore it and write something else
  • talk about it! (try the rubber duck thread  )
  • ask yourself what would definitely NOT happen next, and try that
  • do something totally writing-unrelated
  • try a writing prompt

Great ideas above. Adding to the third one, think about the worst thing that could possibly happen and write that. [name_m]How[/name_m] can you absolutely f**k up the lives of your characters? What would absolutely break them?

If this is difficult for you, then perhaps you need to learn more about your characters. I think it’s often fun and helpful to get some dialogue going between a couple of them, and see how their personalities interact. This can also lead to ideas.

Writing prompts on Pinterest are great as well. I find myself looking them up for fun sometimes (The Fake Redhead’s dialogue prompts are hilarious). Other blog sites like tumblr have writing prompts as well.

Honestly, I wonder if you’re just in your head. It sounds like you have a scene you really like and (I’m totally assuming here and you know what they say about assuming so if I’m wrong, just totally ignore me) you might be worried about messing it up? If that’s the case—and it’s happened to me multiple times—the best thing you can do is write, and remember that the backspace button does exist, and nothing is set in stone. First drafts are only meant to exist.

Finally, have fun! That’s why we write. It’s fun. If it’s stressing you out to a point where it isn’t fun anymore, try writing something else.
