I think its really nice and refreshing to come across unique names that arn’t all Sophies and Hayleys!
I know Girls named;
[name]Clemency[/name]
[name]Zooey[/name] (I thought this one was unusual until I heard of [name]Zooey[/name] Deschanel!)
[name]Joelle[/name]
[name]Verity[/name]
[name]Una[/name]
[name]Leona[/name]
[name]Rosa[/name]-[name]Pheonix[/name]
[name]Maisy[/name]
[name]Ophelia[/name] ( I know a lot of pepople have this on their list but I rarely see it used!)
Jamilia
[name]Celeste[/name] (Again, see this on many peoples lists but only seen it used once!)
[name]Regina[/name]
Geneve
[name]Freedom[/name]
[name]Isis[/name]
So what uncommon names have you seen used in real life?
My little sister’s best friend recently became a big sister to a brother named Matrix [name]Lee[/name].
Her name is conventional, as is her mother’s. However, she has another sister named [name]Heaven[/name], which, though not unheard of, is kind of unconventional.
But Matrix? The sister herself hates it and wanted her mom to “compromise” and name him [name]Levi[/name] Matrix… I see her point.
I know a sibset of [name]Laine[/name] (g) and [name]Marlow[/name] (b), which was surprising to me as I haven’t ever heard those used in real life. Not to mention this sibset are 20 and 17 respectively. [name]Way[/name] ahead of their time.
I know a [name]Tess[/name], [name]Celeste[/name], [name]Carolina[/name], and [name]Matilda[/name].
For boys, I know a [name]Matteo[/name], [name]Spencer[/name], [name]Freddy[/name] and [name]Leo[/name].
I too know a [name]Celeste[/name] in real life (sister to an [name]Alden[/name] and a [name]Patrick[/name]).
I know a [name]Camille[/name] (she’s the only one I’ve ever met…and her sister is [name]Heather[/name]).
I know sisters named [name]Ginger[/name] and [name]Roxy[/name] ([name]Roxanne[/name]).
I work with a girl named Zenona, which is pretty cool (I believe she’s Ukrainian or Polish).
My friend [name]Oriana[/name] has a couple sisters and the most memerable (and the most unusual) are: [name]Lavender[/name] (age two) and [name]Holiday[/name] (a few days old.)
Of course, it depends what your definition of “unusual” is. I know enough people wearing [name]Ophelia[/name], [name]Celeste[/name], [name]Matilda[/name] and [name]Marlow[/name] that none of them feel super “unusual” to me, but others on this thread still see them that way!!
Unusual to me, as in I was surprised to hear it and haven’t met others:
[name]Arpad[/name]
[name]Belinda[/name] (so familiar, yet I’ve only met or heard of one!)
[name]Flora[/name]
Puja
Valita
Eíreann
[name]Hazel[/name]
Reema
[name]Hildegard[/name]
[name]Mona[/name] (another of those familiar yet infrequently used ones)
[name]Liesel[/name]
Maheshie
[name]Marielle[/name]
I know many Hawaiians and all their names are unfamiliar and exciting to me, but I’ve left them off since none of their names are super-rare where they’re from also since they’re a bit of a “flock” I wouldn’t want someone connecting the dots.
I have a friend who just named her new baby boy [name]Azaiah[/name]. It’s a Biblical name from the Old Testament. They pronounce uh-zy-uh. I think other pronunciations say uh-say-uh so I’m not sure which is correct. But either way it is unusual, but not too unfamiliar as it is similar to [name]Isaiah[/name]. Also, a baby boy named [name]Nolan[/name] was born a couple months ago which is probably pretty popular but he is only the second one I’ve met in my whole life. Also, a friend named her baby [name]Phoebe[/name], which I see all the time in the forums but have never heard in real life. Her middle was [name]Eliza[/name], also I have never heard in real life.
Erm, not a ton, and yet, at the same time, I feel like I know more people with unusual names than normal/popular/trendy/dated ones. Erm, these are the ones off the top of my head:
[name]Eliora[/name]
[name]Elora[/name] and [name]Clark[/name] (siblings)
Ivelisse (went by [name]Ivy[/name], which is said like [name]Evie[/name])
[name]Raquel[/name]
[name]Milana[/name]
[name]Mariela[/name]
[name]Chloe[/name] (not unusual now, but it was almost out of the top 500 when she was born)
[name]Josephine[/name] “[name]Josie[/name]” (popular on Nameberry, but she’s the only one I know)
[name]Michael[/name]-[name]Kellan[/name] ([name]Michael[/name]'s not that unusual, but I think [name]Michael[/name]-[name]Kellan[/name] is an intriguing double-barrel!)
[name]Mary[/name]-[name]Grace[/name] (she was just the sweetest, I have really grown to like [name]Mary[/name]-[name]Grace[/name] since I met her!)
[name]Jordana[/name] and [name]Sebastian[/name] (siblings)
[name]Anamaria[/name]
[name]Jacqueline[/name], [name]Judith[/name], and [name]Joanna[/name] (sisters–all in their early 20s/late teens, which strikes me as odd. I would expect a [name]Judith[/name] to be in her 70s, not 21!)
[name]Brenna[/name] (surprisingly, I know quite a few of these, and it seems quite unusual to me…)
[name]Ariana[/name]
[name]Sarai[/name] (said like SAIR-ee, though, as opposed to sah-[name]RYE[/name])
[name]Ady[/name] (said like [name]Addie[/name]. A boy, which really confuses me, [name]Addie[/name]/[name]Ady[/name] strikes me as very feminine! I don’t think it was short for anything like [name]Adrian[/name], either…)
My sister has an awesome sibset: [name]Jethro[/name], [name]Hazel[/name], [name]ETHNE[/name], [name]Talmage[/name] and [name]Orrin[/name]. [name]Hazel[/name] is way trendy but I’ve never seen another [name]Ethne[/name], [name]Jethro[/name], or [name]Orrin[/name].
There is a lady in my church who has a son named Samurye–pronounced Samurai. I think it is awful, but of course, they didn’t consult me.
My own name is [name]Reine[/name]- a name that has never hit the top 1000. I hate it.
I also know a [name]Mia[/name] and a [name]Sophia[/name] way ahead of their time ([name]Mia[/name] is almost fifteen and [name]Sophia[/name] is twelve). They are the only people my age I know named that. I’ve heard many a [name]Sophia[/name] around the playground, though. Same with [name]Amelia[/name].
I know kids named…
[name]Marley[/name] (Girl)
[name]Addison[/name] (way before her time- she is 13)
[name]Kora[/name] (again, she’s 13 too)
[name]Anika[/name]
Yovaurus (boy)
[name]Roberto[/name]
[name]Albert[/name] (He goes by his mn [name]Preston[/name]- no wonder)
[name]Mikhail[/name]
[name]Ciara[/name] (but she pronounces it see-air-uh)
[name]Kyra[/name]
Amruta
Sugriva
[name]Padma[/name]
Morenike (girl)
Abereese (girl- she goes by [name]Reese[/name])
[name]Kaleigh[/name] (this is not a misspelling- her mother’s name is [name]Karen[/name] and her father’s is [name]Lee[/name], so it is combined.)
[name]Iana[/name] (Yawn-uh, she’s from Bulgaria, where she knew two other Ianas her own age)
[name]Christine[/name]
[name]Evelyn[/name] (Between her times)
