What were the names of your ancestors?

I have recently been researching my ancestry in hopes of coming upon some lovely names from previous generation’s first and middle names. I would love to use an ancestral name in the future, in first or middle place, as I feel this may forge a meaningful connection between a child and her roots.

What were the names of your ancestors, first, middle or surnames? From how far back are they? Have you already used or are you planning to use any ancestral names for your (future) children, and if so, in first or middle place?

Some of my ancestors names are…
[name_f]Ida[/name_f] [name_f]Sarah[/name_f], [name_f]Julia[/name_f] [name_f]Frances[/name_f], [name_f]Kathline[/name_f] [name_f]Ada[/name_f], [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] [name_f]Margaret[/name_f], [name_f]Madeline[/name_f], Haneria, [name_f]Annie[/name_f], Isola [name_u]Germaine[/name_u], [name_f]Eveline[/name_f], [name_f]Rosina[/name_f], [name_f]Adeline[/name_f], [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Ellen[/name_f] (lots of [name_f]Marys[/name_f], Mays, Annas, Sarahs and Ellens), [name_f]Attie[/name_f] [name_f]Helen[/name_f], [name_f]Augusta[/name_f], Polly, [name_f]Cathleen[/name_f], Generosa, [name_u]James[/name_u] [name_m]Augustine[/name_m], [name_m]Malachy[/name_m], [name_m]Redmond[/name_m], Edward Edmund, [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] [name_m]John[/name_m] (so, so many of [name_m]Thomas[/name_m], [name_u]James[/name_u] “[name_m]Jimmy[/name_m]” and [name_m]John[/name_m]) etc. :o

I love so many of these names, especially Isola (one of my favourite girl names), Adeline, Polly, Ada and the combo Ida Sarah from the girls list, and Redmond and Augustine for boys.

I have a [name_f]Lillian[/name_f] [name_f]Irene[/name_f], [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] [name_f]Christine[/name_f], [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], [name_f]Clara[/name_f] [name_f]Pauline[/name_f], [name_f]Bernice[/name_f] [name_u]Lee[/name_u], [name_u]Jessie[/name_u] [name_f]Mae[/name_f],
[name_f]Georgia[/name_f] [name_f]Mae[/name_f]…

[name_m]Edward[/name_m] [name_u]Porter[/name_u], [name_m]Archie[/name_m] [name_u]Monroe[/name_u], [name_u]Emory[/name_u] [name_m]Davis[/name_m], [name_m]John[/name_m] [name_m]Alvin[/name_m].

I love [name_f]Ada[/name_f] and Isola and [name_f]Adeline[/name_f] from your family and [name_f]Lillian[/name_f], [name_u]Lee[/name_u] and [name_f]Clara[/name_f] from mine. For the guys, I like [name_u]James[/name_u] and [name_m]Redmond[/name_m] from yours and [name_u]Porter[/name_u], [name_u]Emory[/name_u] and [name_m]Davis[/name_m] from mine;) I love “old” names… I have one myself…[name_f]Martha[/name_f]

[name_f]Lillian[/name_f] [name_f]Irene[/name_f] is such a beautiful combination, @evryan! I just love [name_f]Sarah[/name_f], [name_f]Clara[/name_f] and [name_f]Georgia[/name_f] [name_f]Mae[/name_f] (so sweet!). All of the boys names are so lovely, too; [name_m]Edward[/name_m] [name_u]Porter[/name_u] is so handsome. :o

[name_f]Martha[/name_f] is such a beauty, your daughter has a wonderful name!

I was just thinking about starting a thread like this! Most of my family doesn’t (or didn’t) have middle names, but I’ve got essentially a TON of Spanish/Arabic/Farsi/Hebrew gems on my mom’s side & some sweet Russian Jewish ones from my dad:

[ul]

[/ul]

As far as male ancestors are concerned, we got just as (if not more) thorough records but ten times less interesting names. Most of them are named things like [name_m]Isidore[/name_m]–which the source of one particularly accurate ‘old Sephardic man’ stereotype–and [name_m]Abraham[/name_m] and [name_m]Noam[/name_m] and [name_m]Samuel[/name_m]. I do have one great-great grandfather named Sa’adia, which I think is gorgeous, but which might not translate so well into an American context? I’m not sure.

(I do love [name_f]Rosina[/name_f] and [name_f]Adeline[/name_f], btw.)

I come from a Scottish line so there are many males sharing two names, [name_m]George[/name_m] and [name_m]Alexander[/name_m]. My brother’s, dad’s and grandad’s middle names are [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] and my cousins are called [name_m]George[/name_m] and [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] (as well as grandad being called [name_m]George[/name_m]). I’m in two minds about continuing [name_m]Alexander[/name_m], it’ll have to depend on what my brother does.

On the other side there are names like [name_f]Irene[/name_f] (great grandmother) and [name_u]Jean[/name_u] (grandma and one of my middle names). I suppose there’s a [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] around as that’s my other middle name. [name_u]Lee[/name_u]'s another family name as its my mothers and sisters middle name.

I’d like to continue [name_f]Irene[/name_f] and [name_u]Jean[/name_u] if any

I’m adopted and the family genealogist so I have quite a few names & the fact that some span back to the 16th century.
Most interesting: Loomis (male) & Mehitable (female)

I don’t know many but the ones I do know are:

The only ones I would consider are [name_f]Filomena[/name_f], [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] (my middle name), [name_f]Stella[/name_f], and [name_m]Antonio[/name_m] (but I’d probably go with [name_m]Anthony[/name_m] even though it’s popular. I just don’t like the sound of [name_m]Antonio[/name_m]).

I love this topic! Over the last few years, I’ve been tracing back my family tree and have found so much interesting stuff! As far as names, my family got around so we are Italian, Polish, Greek, [name_m]German[/name_m], Irish, Scottish, English, Dutch, and several more that I can’t recall right now, so there’s a variety! I don’t have list, but here’s what I can remember. Note: there’s tons of Johns and other common names.

Ligouri (male, last name Logsdon, circa 1700s I believe). There were at least 2.
[name_f]Honora[/name_f] (last name O’[name_u]Flynn[/name_u], born around 1681. Family lore and records show she was a kidnapped Irish princess, or other nobility, brought to [name_u]America[/name_u] for the purpose of being sold as a bride or servant. My ancestor, [name_m]William[/name_m] Logsdon, became her husband and they were very happy).

Purtella - last name back in my family tree
[name_f]Amina[/name_f] [name_f]Estel[/name_f] (born 1869, went by [name_f]Minnie[/name_f])
[name_f]Jennie[/name_f] [name_f]Arabelle[/name_f] (born 1867, sister of [name_f]Minnie[/name_f], went by [name_f]Belle[/name_f])
[name_f]Myrtle[/name_f] [name_f]Azalea[/name_f] (I wanna say born in 1700s)
[name_f]Lilas[/name_f] (female, forgot date…I think she was a sister to [name_f]Minnie[/name_f] and [name_f]Belle[/name_f])
[name_f]Jerusha[/name_f] (female, I think sister to [name_f]Minnie[/name_f] and [name_f]Belle[/name_f], and possibly [name_f]Lilas[/name_f])

[name_m]Oreste[/name_m] (Italian grandfather’s brother; born early 1900s)
[name_m]Natalino[/name_m] (my Italian grandfather)
[name_u]Jessie[/name_u] (great-grandmothers sister. I think her name was Cheska or something)
[name_m]George[/name_m] [name_m]Elmo[/name_m] (my great-grandfather)
[name_f]Elsbeth[/name_f] (sister of [name_f]Jerusha[/name_f])

That’s a few. If I happen to get back into my records and find more, I’ll post them. We have contemplated using some names from our family trees but are not quite sure yet.

I love learning about my ancestry on my mother’s side.
They originated from Pomerania.

My grandmother was named [name_f]Pauline[/name_f] [name_f]Amanda[/name_f]
siblings: [name_m]Milton[/name_m] [name_m]John[/name_m]; [name_m]Phillip[/name_m] [name_m]Franz[/name_m]

Great-grandmother: [name_f]Malinda[/name_f] [name_f]Maria[/name_f] [name_f]Magdaline[/name_f]
sibling: [name_f]Paula[/name_f] [name_f]Martha[/name_f] [name_f]Laura[/name_f] (called [name_f]Lollie[/name_f])
her husband: [name_m]Reinhold[/name_m] [name_u]August[/name_u]

Great-great-grandmother: [name_f]Hulda[/name_f] [name_f]Emilie[/name_f]
Her husband: [name_m]Franz[/name_m] [name_m]Ludwig[/name_m]

great-great-grandmother: [name_f]Amanda[/name_f] [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]
Her husband: [name_m]Johannes[/name_m] [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] [name_m]Friedrich[/name_m]

his siblings:
[name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f]
[name_f]Caroline[/name_f] [name_f]Emilie[/name_f] [name_f]Ernestine[/name_f]
[name_m]Heinrich[/name_m] [name_m]Wilhelm[/name_m] [name_m]Carl[/name_m]
[name_m]Julius[/name_m] [name_m]Wilhelm[/name_m] [name_m]Franz[/name_m]
[name_f]Johanna[/name_f] [name_f]Marie[/name_f] [name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f]
[name_f]Theresia[/name_f] [name_f]Rosaline[/name_f]
[name_f]Martha[/name_f]
[name_f]Mary[/name_f]

I’ll only list the names I like, to make things easier.

[name_u]Emmett[/name_u] [name_m]Allan[/name_m] - 2nd great uncle. [name_u]Love[/name_u] the name [name_u]Emmett[/name_u], and even though I don’t typically like alternative spellings, I like the symmetry of the double l’s in [name_m]Allen[/name_m] to mimic [name_u]Emmett[/name_u].

[name_f]Margaret[/name_f] Elmslie - great grandmother. I don’t love the names, but love the tradition of using a mothers maiden name as a childs middle name, however it just won’t work with my maiden name for my children.

[name_m]William[/name_m] [name_m]Lewis[/name_m] - 2x great grandfather. I like classic names like this, though probably wouldn’t use them. I also like this spelling of [name_m]Lewis[/name_m] better than [name_m]Louis[/name_m], whom its always unclear which way its pronounced.

[name_f]Violet[/name_f] [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f] - grandmother. I love [name_f]Violet[/name_f] and [name_f]Grace[/name_f], but would only use them as middle names.

[name_m]Alister[/name_m] [name_u]Douglas[/name_u] - 2nd great uncle. Such a handsome, classic name. I prefer [name_m]Alister[/name_m] to [name_m]Alistair[/name_m], as it feels more usable and less pompous, and would definitely consider using it.

[name_m]Hugh[/name_m] [name_m]Graham[/name_m] - great uncle and great grandfather. Another handsome classic. [name_m]Even[/name_m] though I love [name_m]Hugh[/name_m], I can’t see myself using it as it doesn’t work well with SO’s surname. [name_m]Graham[/name_m] (nn [name_u]Gray[/name_u]) I absolutely love and would use, though it must be pronounced gray-um and not gram. Huge pet peeve!!

[name_f]Filomena[/name_f] - 2x great grandmother. Beautiful name, but would not use myself as I just don’t think Fil-starting girl names would work well at this day and age.

[name_f]Adelina[/name_f] [name_f]Elvera[/name_f] - great aunt. [name_u]Love[/name_u] love love the name [name_f]Adelina[/name_f], and would consider using it. So many nickname possibilities as well.

[name_f]Elena[/name_f] - 2nd great aunt. Also in love with [name_f]Elena[/name_f] and would use.

If I posted all my ancestors names, my post would be ridiculously long. I’ve been researching my ancestry off and on for the past 20 years. Obviously, I love discovering the names of ancestors. Maybe I’ll post some of my favorites later, if I get the chance.

I cannot even go into my list of family names; I have the biggest family tree of Welsh/Germanic names on one side, Southern/[name_f]Americana[/name_f]/[name_m]French[/name_m] on the other. So we have men named [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] and women named things like Theckla and [name_f]Electa[/name_f].

Off the top of my mind, the most interesting names in my family tree are:

GIRLS
[name_f]Alexandrina[/name_f] (one of my faves)
Henriqueta (though, I prefer [name_f]Henrietta[/name_f])
Adalgisa
Universina (like…. Universe + ina)

BOYS
Cid (I like the [name_m]Sid[/name_m] spelling a bit more)
[name_f]Lyra[/name_f]
Hypolito
Anaurelino ([name_f]Ana[/name_f] + [name_m]Aurelio[/name_m] + ino ???)
Modesto (literally, “modest guy”)
