I use to visit a castle in South [name]Carolina[/name] as a girl across from [name]Brook[/name] [name]Green[/name] Gardens. The name of the castle was [name]Atalaya[/name] a Spanish name actually pronounced At ah lye ah. My husband and I both love the name. I happen to have had a grandmother named [name]Adel[/name] . So we thought instead of [name]Atalaya[/name] we would call her [name]Ad[/name] eh lye ah but with an easier spelling. My husband and I came up with [name]Adeliah[/name]. Can you give us some better suggestions for the spelling of this name? We thought of Adalaya but with the the latin spelling it sounds like [name]Ad[/name] ah lay ah which is not what we want.
I know this is not a fun question to answer but we really need help with this one. It seems to be a problem still.
[name]How[/name] pretty and personally special! [name]Don[/name]'t go with [name]Adeliah[/name]. That says Uh-[name]Dee[/name]-[name]Lee[/name]-Uh to me ([name]Adelia[/name] is actually a different name). When I read [name]Atalaya[/name], I had to take a second and sound it out, but I sounded it out exactly how you said it was pronounced. There are only two ways to pronounce it: At-uh-lay-uh or the correct way. [name]Just[/name] like [name]Maya[/name] is only sometimes “[name]May[/name]-uh,” I think most people will go with the correct spelling. I say keep the original spelling.
Thank you! Would you go with Adalaya or just stick with [name]Atalaya[/name]?
I would most definitely stick with [name]Atalaya[/name]. For one thing, it’s the original of the name that has such special meaning to you, for another, it seems more like a “real” name to me than Adalaya. I would also agree with previous poster in saying that i would pronounce [name]Adeliah[/name] like uh-[name]DEE[/name]-lee-uh. I pronounced [name]Atalaya[/name] the correct way without ever having seen it before, so I don’t think that would be a problem either.
What a nice namesake! I would pronounce [name]Atalaya[/name] the way you intend, first try, because it’s clearly Spanish to me. Of course that way you lose honoring [name]Adel[/name]. My problem with [name]Adeliah[/name] is that I start with [name]Adel[/name] ([name]Adele[/name]) and want to say “[name]Adele[/name]-ee-ya”. Or I see “delia” in the middle and want to say “uh-[name]Delia[/name]”.
Personally I like [name]Atalaya[/name]. But if honoring [name]Adel[/name] is important, maybe Adelaya?
Thank you Ladies! I showed husband this poll. We decided on [name]Atalaya[/name]! Thanks so much for your help.
I’m late to the party, but what a lovely name!
