What would be your thoughts if you met a

Trawling through some old ‘very unusual’ favourites, I came across these, and of course I wondered how other people would perceive a child with one of these names; what your first thoughts on the name would be, what you might expect the personality of a child with this name to be like, and even the appearance that the name conjurs up for you. We are not considering the names for our twins, I am just wondering

All are literary or mythology names :
[name]Aminta[/name]
Belphoebe
[name]Cybele[/name]
[name]Cymbeline[/name]
[name]Lalage[/name]
[name]Pandora[/name].

[name]Aminta[/name] - Wouldn’t have recognized this as Greek.
Belphoebe - Like [name]Phoebe[/name], but this is an awkward compound. I suppose Phoebelle would be just as clumsy.
[name]Cybele[/name] - This sounds stronger than…
[name]Cymbeline[/name] - who I imagine as beautiful but fragile.
[name]Lalage[/name] - [name]How[/name] do you say this, la-lazh?
[name]Pandora[/name] - I can easily imagine this one used today. Some other names have managed to escape unfortunate namesakes.

im all for mythology names, i love some like [name]Atlas[/name] and [name]Icarus[/name]. but really, some of them you should really find out the mythology behind them, like pandora - the woman who unleashed all the miseries on the world, and cybele, a fertility goddess whose male followers all castrated themselves. not sure i’d bestow that upon my kid

I feel like poor [name]Pandora[/name] gets a bad rap; it’s such a lovely name, too! Definitely my favorite from your list.

I mean, if parents can get away with naming their daughters [name]Lilith[/name], [name]Eve[/name], and [name]Delilah[/name] with little to no flak, I don’t see why [name]Pandora[/name] isn’t an equally viable option. I’d be proud to be named after the lady who let loose all human knowledge, thereby saving the world from eternal blind ignorance. Ignorance may be bliss but it suuure won’t get you anywhere.

I agree! I’m not planning to use [name]Pandora[/name], as we couldn’t have a [name]Dorothea[/name] and a [name]Pandora[/name], but she seems no less of a baddy than [name]Eve[/name] … both gave into a temptation, which led to expulsion from the Garden of [name]Eden[/name] into the misery of the world/the release of misery into the word, and lots of people name their daughters [name]Eve[/name]. And I’ve always loved that [name]Hope[/name] was left at the end

Oh, definitely! I always thought that was a lovely sentiment; that no matter what happens to mankind, there’s always hope for a better future.

[name]Dorothea[/name] is so charming~!

Thank you!

Hey, Twinkle!

[name]Aminta[/name] - This name has a similar feel to [name]Aretha[/name], [name]Arethusa[/name], [name]Amity[/name], and [name]Althea[/name] for me. I’m not in love, but I certainly don’t hate it. The nickname issue is a bit odd, as I’m not feeling [name]Amy[/name] or [name]Minty[/name] - ooh, fresh! - for Miss [name]Aminta[/name]. And, does it sound awful that I can only envision and [name]African[/name] American with this name?

Belphoebe - [name]Phoebe[/name] is spunky and sassy on its own, but smash a [name]Bel[/name] on there and things get crazy! I think I might prefer this as Belaphoebe, as it has a more appealing flow, and Belphoebe just doesn’t look pretty to me. [name]Aren[/name]'t there enough [name]Bel[/name] names in the world? Ha!

[name]Cybele[/name] - This sounds like a vintage classic - a la [name]Cybil[/name] - to me. Not too weird, but certainly unique - a la [name]Sybille[/name]. Not for me, but it has a certain exotic, feminine flavor that appeals to me.

[name]Cymbeline[/name] - Though I can’t help but think of cymbals and tambourines, I think this is a very pretty name! It is like [name]Marcheline[/name], but spunkier and more dressed up. [name]Lovely[/name] indeed.

[name]Lalage[/name] - I have no idea how to pronounce this, and it looks like a mess of letters to me, honestly. I don’t see this being attractive at all.

[name]Pandora[/name] - I’m more of an [name]Isadora[/name] girl - so mysterious and exotic and beautiful! - but [name]Pandora[/name] certainly isn’t terrible, if you subtract the associations. But, who am I to talk when I wish people would use [name]Jezebel[/name] more often? More power to ya, [name]Pandora[/name]!

Thanks for the fun, Twinkle - give your baby belly a pat for all of us at NB! (And give the kiddos hugs and kisses, of course…)
