What would name her sister?

[name_f]Chrysanth3mum[/name_f], “[name_f]Xanthe[/name_f]” is still topping my list.

Which of these names could you see working the best for a sister? Which are the worst? Some of them have not won me over, but I’m trying to get a feel for what people think “goes” with a big name like [name_f]Chrysanth3mum[/name_f]. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you have other suggestions?

With [name_f]Chrysanthemum[/name_f] “[name_f]Xanthe[/name_f]”:, I feel like these would be the best choices for a sibset:
[name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f], “[name_f]Velma[/name_f]” *
[name_f]Fern[/name_f]
[name_u]Vesper[/name_u]
[name_m]Vine[/name_m]
[name_f]Hyacinth[/name_f], “[name_f]Cynthia[/name_f]” *
[name_f]Jasmine[/name_f]*
[name_f]Marigold[/name_f]
Thistle
[name_f]Amaryllis[/name_f]*
Edelweiss*
[name_f]Griselda[/name_f], “[name_f]Zelda[/name_f]”
[name_f]Sheherazade[/name_f]*
[name_f]Stellaluna[/name_f]
[name_f]Dahlia[/name_f]
[name_f]Saffron[/name_f]*
[name_f]Tulip[/name_f]
[name_f]Cypress[/name_f]
[name_f]Anemone[/name_f]

The starred ones are the ones I like most with it. Particularly:

[name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f] “[name_f]Velma[/name_f]” (Off hand comment, I knew a “[name_f]Meena[/name_f]” with this name, have you considered that nn? [name_f]Velma[/name_f]'s adorable, though) and [name_f]Hyacinth[/name_f] “[name_f]Cynthia[/name_f]” I love both [name_f]Hyacinth[/name_f] and [name_f]Cynthia[/name_f], but it’s a longer flower name with a commonish, medium length mn, which is a combination I saw in [name_f]Chrysanthemum[/name_f] “[name_f]Xanthe[/name_f]”

I like these with sister [name_f]Chrysanthemum[/name_f] “[name_f]Xanthe[/name_f]”, I think you need a longer name with [name_f]Chrysanthemum[/name_f]. Also never commented on your “[name_f]Pearl[/name_f] as a second middle” post. I voted for just [name_f]Helen[/name_f] because it seems like a mouthful, but definitely think you should keep [name_f]Chrysanthemum[/name_f] as the first name, the story is wonderful! And the wealth of nicknames really helps.

[name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f], “[name_f]Velma[/name_f]”
[name_f]Rosamund[/name_f]
[name_f]Cassiopeia[/name_f], “[name_f]Pia[/name_f]”
[name_f]Hyacinth[/name_f], “[name_f]Cynthia[/name_f]”
[name_f]Amaryllis[/name_f]
Edelweiss
[name_f]Griselda[/name_f], “[name_f]Zelda[/name_f]”
[name_f]Beatrix[/name_f]
[name_f]Sheherazade[/name_f]
[name_f]Stellaluna[/name_f]
[name_f]Callixta[/name_f]
[name_f]Calliope[/name_f]
[name_f]Zephrine[/name_f]

I also like [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] with [name_f]Chrysanthemum[/name_f].

I’m loving [name_f]Hyacinth[/name_f], [name_f]Amaryllis[/name_f], [name_f]Camellia[/name_f] and Edelweiss the most. It’ll create a strong floral theme, especially since you’re [name_f]Lilian[/name_f]. I think it’ll be a cute connection though.

Another that I like with [name_f]Chrysanthemum[/name_f] :
[name_f]Octavia[/name_f]
[name_f]Rosamund[/name_f]
[name_f]Svetlana[/name_f]
[name_f]Marigold[/name_f]
[name_f]Amadea[/name_f]
[name_f]Zephrine[/name_f]
[name_f]Cressida[/name_f]
[name_f]Phaedra[/name_f]
[name_f]Cordelia[/name_f]

Best
[name_f]Cassiopeia[/name_f], “[name_f]Pia[/name_f]”
[name_f]Hyacinth[/name_f], “[name_f]Cynthia[/name_f]”
[name_f]Amaryllis[/name_f]
[name_f]Sheherazade[/name_f] (if you want to go all out on length)

Okay
[name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f], “[name_f]Velma[/name_f]”
[name_f]Rosamund[/name_f]
[name_f]Jasmine[/name_f]
[name_f]Marigold[/name_f]
[name_f]Verbena[/name_f]

Most of the others are just too short next to C, too usual or too different in style.

What a great list! I like most of them but these stuck out to me as sisters to lil [name_f]Chrysanthemum[/name_f]

I think I like [name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f] and [name_f]Cassiopeia[/name_f] best!

[name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f], “[name_f]Velma[/name_f]”
[name_f]Minerva[/name_f]

[name_f]Griselda[/name_f] (though, [name_f]Xanthe[/name_f] and [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] are too much)
[name_f]Sheherazade[/name_f] ([name_u]LOVE[/name_u] THIS ONE – meaning “world-freer”) – [name_f]Zadie[/name_f]: read above. [name_f]Sher[/name_f]/ [name_f]Cher[/name_f], Shera, Zad?
[name_f]Stellaluna[/name_f] (also love, but hate this speling ;()
[name_f]Astrea[/name_f]
[name_f]Cypress[/name_f]
[name_f]Cressida[/name_f]
[name_f]Hermione[/name_f]

Which are the worst?

[name_m]Vine[/name_m]
[name_f]Hyacinth[/name_f], “[name_f]Cynthia[/name_f]” – TOO matchy, nn AND full name
[name_f]Verbena[/name_f] – too matchy

[name_f]Dido[/name_f]
Hawkin
[name_u]Zephyr[/name_u]

My true favorite is [name_f]Mathilda[/name_f] “[name_f]Hildie[/name_f]” [name_f]Elin[/name_f] (or maybe, [name_f]Mathilda[/name_f] “[name_f]Hildie[/name_f]” [name_f]Pearl[/name_f]).

I think the following names would go best with [name_f]Chrysanthemum[/name_f]:

[name_f]Rosamund[/name_f], [name_f]Hyacinth[/name_f], [name_f]Marigold[/name_f], [name_f]Amaryllis[/name_f], [name_f]Stellaluna[/name_f], [name_f]Camellia[/name_f], [name_f]Saffron[/name_f], [name_f]Anemone[/name_f], [name_f]Pomona[/name_f], [name_f]Azalea[/name_f]

The only thing I’d say though about [name_f]Stellaluna[/name_f] is that [name_f]Chrysanthemum[/name_f] and [name_f]Stellaluna[/name_f] are both names associated with popular picture books. I’m not sure if you’re aware of that, but it’s possible people would notice and think you named them after those characters. Not that that’s a negative thing, since they’re really great stories, but just something to consider for that pair of names together!

I am aware (it’s my avatar pic). Its one of my alltime favorite children’s books. I don’t like [name_f]Stellaluna[/name_f] as a name, but good on [name_f]Ellen[/name_f] [name_m]Pompeo[/name_m] for using the combo. I included it wondering if people thought it fit for that very reason with the children’s book association. [name_f]Glad[/name_f] to know somebody noticed it.

[name_f]Amaryllis[/name_f]
[name_f]Sheherazade[/name_f]
[name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f]
[name_f]Persephone[/name_f]

Best:

[name_f]Cassiopeia[/name_f]
[name_f]Amaryllis[/name_f] (my fav)
[name_f]Marigold[/name_f]
[name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f]
[name_f]Hyacinth[/name_f]
[name_f]Hermione[/name_f]
[name_f]Azalea[/name_f]
[name_f]Octavia[/name_f]
[name_f]Cordelia[/name_f]
[name_f]Calliope[/name_f]
[name_f]Beatrix[/name_f]
[name_f]Camellia[/name_f]

Worst:
the short names, lovely as they may be, don’t go - eg [name_f]Ivy[/name_f], [name_f]Fern[/name_f], [name_f]Plum[/name_f]
‘ordinary’ and well-used names don’t go - eg [name_u]Julie[/name_u], [name_f]Jasmine[/name_f], [name_f]Heidi[/name_f], [name_f]Zoe[/name_f], [name_f]Heather[/name_f], [name_f]Melissa[/name_f]
some unappealing sounds, different styles don’t go - eg [name_f]Mavis[/name_f], [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f], [name_f]Svetlana[/name_f], [name_f]Verbena[/name_f], Hawkin
some plant names but lacking in the charm of [name_f]Chrysanthemum[/name_f] I’d also cross of - eg [name_m]Vine[/name_m], Thistle

Some names I love but don’t feel they quite match with the feel of [name_f]Chrysanthemum[/name_f] are [name_f]Cressida[/name_f], [name_f]Tabitha[/name_f].

My favourites with [name_f]Chrysanthemum[/name_f] are:

[name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f]
[name_f]Hyacinth[/name_f]
[name_f]Calliope[/name_f]
[name_f]Cornelia[/name_f]
[name_f]Ursula[/name_f]
[name_f]Beatrix[/name_f]
[name_f]Cassiopeia[/name_f]
[name_f]Hermione[/name_f]

One of the previous posters summed up my feelings on how the names match. Some just seem too ordinary next to [name_f]Chrysanthemum[/name_f] or too short (especially with your one syllable last name). Most of the flower names just seem purposely matchy and in-you-face next to [name_f]Chrysanthemum[/name_f] for my taste.

Anyway, here’s my top four picks, along with my top four “Nopes”.

[name_u]Love[/name_u]:

[name_u]Vesper[/name_u]: A beautiful, underrated word name. It would stand well next to [name_f]Chrysanthemum[/name_f] without looking outshined.
[name_f]Rosamund[/name_f]: An underused old fashioned name. I think it brings a stately charm to [name_f]Chrysanthemum[/name_f], plus it sounds nice next to your boy’s pick as well.
[name_f]Astrid[/name_f]: Cute, subtly literary, and wouldn’t seem plain next to her sister’s name.
Edelweiss: An unusual flower name, but it doesn’t sound too matchy with [name_f]Chrysanthemum[/name_f] at all imo.

Not for [name_f]Chrysanthemum[/name_f]'s sister:

[name_f]Jade[/name_f]: On top of your explanation for [name_f]Chrysanthemum[/name_f], this one sounds kind of like a joke, since they’re both pretty prevalent symbols in several [name_f]Asian[/name_f] cultures. Maybe as a middle, but not as a first.
[name_f]Calliope[/name_f]: I like the sound of this, but the more I say it with [name_f]Chrysanthemum[/name_f], the more it sounds like a tongue twister. [name_f]Xanthe[/name_f] and [name_f]Calliope[/name_f] doesn’t sound bad though.
[name_f]Griselda[/name_f], “[name_f]Zelda[/name_f]”: If this was just [name_f]Zelda[/name_f], I’d have voted yes for it. [name_f]Chrysanthemum[/name_f] and [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] sound super adorable, but the “Griz” sound in [name_f]Griselda[/name_f] puts me off of it as a full name. If I had to pick a full name for nn [name_f]Zelda[/name_f], it would be Zerelda.
[name_f]Sheherazade[/name_f], “[name_f]Zadie[/name_f]”: One of my GPs. It’s a cool literary name, but I think it’s better left inside of a book. [name_f]Hera[/name_f] might be another suggestion you might like though.

All of your suggestions are lovely, but I think [name_f]Amaryllis[/name_f] goes the best with [name_f]Chrysanthemum[/name_f]! Best of luck

[name_m]Just[/name_m] sayin’ [name_f]Chrysanthemum[/name_f] and [name_f]Plum[/name_f] makes me laugh! “Mum and [name_f]Plum[/name_f]”! Hilarious/adorable

[name_f]Cassiopeia[/name_f] stands out to me; both [name_f]Chrysanthemum[/name_f] and [name_f]Cassiopeia[/name_f] are out there but begin with familiar sounds, [name_f]Chrys[/name_f]- and [name_u]Cass[/name_u]-. Same goes for [name_f]Calliope[/name_f], which probably matches the style of [name_f]Chrysanthemum[/name_f] even better. [name_f]Chrysanthemum[/name_f] and [name_f]Dido[/name_f] would be cool, too.

I really like [name_f]Scheherazade[/name_f] but don’t feel it matches the style of [name_f]Chrysanthemum[/name_f].

I agree with Araminty - [name_f]Zoe[/name_f], [name_f]Naomi[/name_f], [name_f]Heather[/name_f], [name_f]Jasmine[/name_f], [name_f]Jade[/name_f], [name_f]Heidi[/name_f] and [name_f]Melissa[/name_f] are too common next to [name_f]Chrysanthemum[/name_f].

I like pp’s suggestion of Dandara - gorgeous! You might also like:
[name_f]Hypatia[/name_f]
Antimony
Phryne
[name_f]Ligeia[/name_f]
[name_f]Vashti[/name_f]
[name_f]Yavanna[/name_f]
[name_f]Ixora[/name_f]
[name_f]Jonquil[/name_f]
[name_f]Fidelia[/name_f]
[name_f]Galatea[/name_f]
Prospera
[name_f]Mazarine[/name_f]
[name_f]Tulsi[/name_f]
[name_f]Nimue[/name_f]

I like a lot of these. Sadly, many have already been vetoed by DH in the past:
[name_u]Damaris[/name_u]
[name_f]Hedwig[/name_f] and its variants (it’s a dear family name so I fought hard for it)
[name_f]Iphigenia[/name_f]
[name_f]Lucrezia[/name_f]
[name_f]Mehitabel[/name_f] (I have a colonial ancestor by this name and my mother-in-law is [name_f]Mabel[/name_f] so I thought it might work but no dice)
[name_f]Thekla[/name_f] (I prefer this spelling)
[name_f]Vermilion[/name_f] (didn’t fight hard for this one though considering the sound of my own name)
[name_f]Ceridwen[/name_f]

Ones we should consider from your list:
[name_f]Artemisia[/name_f] (I think I prefer [name_u]Artemis[/name_u], but @tfzholgadhr has brought this to the fore for me)
Dandara
[name_f]Ferelith[/name_f] (my husband loves [name_f]Freya[/name_f] but I really don’t. Perhaps he’d like this one.)
[name_f]Guinevere[/name_f]
[name_f]Morgana[/name_f]
[name_f]Esmeralda[/name_f]
[name_f]Melissande[/name_f] (we’ve talked about this one, this spelling, before and my husband didn’t really like it, but he loves [name_f]Melissa[/name_f] and I think [name_f]Melissande[/name_f] would be better with [name_f]Chrysanthemum[/name_f]. I think he could be swayed)

Thanks for the great feedback. I love Dandara and likely never would have come across it on my own.

Could you see [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] as a nickname for [name_f]Esmeralda[/name_f], [name_f]Esmerelda[/name_f]? Now that I consider [name_f]Esmeralda[/name_f] more deeply per lu_brasil’s suggestion I could see them working. Especially considering that [name_f]Esme[/name_f] would be the intuitive nickname like [name_f]Chrissy[/name_f] for [name_f]Chrysanthemum[/name_f], while [name_f]Xanthe[/name_f] and [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] are both more off-beat.

I like so many! Ones I think I have a shot with when it comes to DH, though:
[name_f]Hypatia[/name_f]
Prospera ([name_m]Prospero[/name_m] is on our extended boys list. Might even be a way to get Spyri as a nickname after [name_f]Johanna[/name_f] Spyri)
[name_f]Nimue[/name_f]

Thanks!!

My requirements for [name_f]Chrysanthemum[/name_f]'s sister would be:

  • At least two syllables/five letters (but preferably 3-4 syllables)
  • equally feminine and melodious (so no unisex names or overly clunky, frumpy, “old lady” names)
  • in the same unusual/familiar sweet spot (so not too ordinary or too totally bizarre)
  • not a flower name unless you plan to use a flower theme
  • not a C- name unless you plan to use a C theme (I say this, but like 2/3 of my favorites start with C, so take it with a grain of salt ;))

[name_f]Viola[/name_f], [name_f]Rosamund[/name_f] - I like that these aren’t quite flower names, but evoke flowers.
[name_u]Vesper[/name_u], [name_f]Tempest[/name_f] - I also like the idea of an equally unusual but non-flower word name with [name_f]Chrysanthemum[/name_f]! [name_f]Tempest[/name_f] is NMS, but I love [name_u]Vesper[/name_u].
[name_f]Minerva[/name_f]
[name_f]Sylvia[/name_f]
[name_f]Thisbe[/name_f] - A little short, but it has the same upbeat, springtime feel as [name_f]Chrysanthemum[/name_f]
[name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] - Would be PERFECT with [name_f]Chrysanthemum[/name_f].
[name_f]Paloma[/name_f] - Not usually my style, but this one would also fit so well with [name_f]Chrysanthemum[/name_f]! [name_u]Love[/name_u] the flower + dove imagery.
[name_f]Amadea[/name_f]
[name_f]Octavia[/name_f]
[name_f]Priscilla[/name_f]
[name_f]Sabina[/name_f]/[name_f]Sabrina[/name_f] - I’d probably pick [name_f]Sabina[/name_f] over [name_f]Sabrina[/name_f] because it’s a tad more unusual.
[name_f]Odette[/name_f]
[name_f]Niobe[/name_f]
[name_f]Phaedra[/name_f]
[name_f]Hermione[/name_f] - More usable than ever now thanks to HP, and has the same offbeat-but-feminine charm as [name_f]Chrysanthemum[/name_f]

Yes if you’re doing flowers/nature:

[name_f]Azalea[/name_f]
[name_f]Anemone[/name_f], “[name_f]Mona[/name_f]” - Might be a bit of a mouthful with [name_f]Chrysanthemum[/name_f].
[name_f]Dahlia[/name_f]
[name_f]Camellia[/name_f]
[name_f]Saffron[/name_f] - My favorite “matching nature name” option! I like that it “-fron” almost rhymes with “-mum,” but it’s different letters. [name_f]Xanthe[/name_f] and [name_f]Saffron[/name_f] sound great together.
[name_f]Tulip[/name_f]
[name_f]Marigold[/name_f]
[name_f]Verbena[/name_f]

Yes if you’re doing C’s:

[name_f]Cassiopeia[/name_f], “[name_f]Pia[/name_f]”
[name_f]Callixta[/name_f]
[name_f]Calliope[/name_f]
[name_f]Cressida[/name_f]
[name_f]Cordelia[/name_f]
[name_f]Cornelia[/name_f]

Not quite:

[name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f], “[name_f]Velma[/name_f]” - On the fence about this one. I think with nn [name_f]Velma[/name_f], it’s a little too old-ladyish. If you used [name_f]Willa[/name_f] or [name_f]Mina[/name_f] instead, I’d move it to the “yes” column.
[name_f]Hyacinth[/name_f], “[name_f]Cynthia[/name_f]” - Not nearly as pretty or fun to say as [name_f]Chrysanthemum[/name_f]. Also dislike the matching th’s of [name_f]Xanthe[/name_f] and [name_f]Cynthia[/name_f].
[name_f]Noemi[/name_f] - Maybe a hair too ordinary? I’m on the fence. With the right middle, maybe. [name_f]Xanthe[/name_f] and [name_f]Noemi[/name_f] certainly sound great together.

No:

[name_f]Svetlana[/name_f] - I don’t wanna be like “it’s too ethnic,” but something this hardcore Eastern European does feel kind of out of left field beside [name_f]Chrysanthemum[/name_f].
[name_u]Jule[/name_u] - I love it and the meaning behind it, but it’s too short. Keep it in the middle!
[name_f]Peony[/name_f] - The first syllable is “pee.” That there is a major deal breaker.

[name_f]Mavis[/name_f], [name_f]Ursula[/name_f], [name_f]Griselda[/name_f] - Definitely too frumpy. [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] by itself would be a good option, although alliterative with [name_f]Xanthe[/name_f].

[name_f]Briar[/name_f], [name_f]Greer[/name_f], [name_u]Zephyr[/name_u], [name_u]Taliesin[/name_u], [name_u]Ember[/name_u], [name_f]Cypress[/name_f] - Too unisex (which is painful, because I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_f]Briar[/name_f], [name_u]Zephyr[/name_u], [name_u]Ember[/name_u], and [name_u]Taliesin[/name_u].)

[name_u]Raven[/name_u], [name_f]Melissa[/name_f], [name_f]Jasmine[/name_f], [name_f]Naomi[/name_f] - Too ordinary

[name_f]Agate[/name_f], Thistle, [name_f]Tarragon[/name_f], [name_f]Thyme[/name_f], Marjoram, [name_f]Aster[/name_f], [name_f]Sheherazade[/name_f], [name_f]Stellaluna[/name_f], [name_f]Dorae[/name_f], [name_f]Astraea[/name_f], [name_f]Circe[/name_f], [name_f]Tindra[/name_f], [name_f]Lapis[/name_f], Magpie, Nightingale, [name_f]Oriole[/name_f], Hawkin, [name_f]Alameda[/name_f], [name_f]Agrippina[/name_f], [name_f]Medea[/name_f], [name_f]Bastienne[/name_f], Persenche, Osmanthus - Too bizarre.

The ones I didn’t mention are either too short, or a poor fit for some other reason. An interesting and diverse list overall; you definitely have a lot to work with for baby #2 if you do end up using [name_f]Chrysanthemum[/name_f] for #1!
