Thanks! Gosh, you come up with great names. [name]Violet[/name] [name]India[/name] - boy, do I adore [name]India[/name] - and [name]Olive[/name] [name]Penelope[/name] are stunning. I can’t decide which I prefer, though. As for the boys, love 'em both, but I’ve got a brother named [name]Benjamin[/name] and a father named [name]James[/name]. Hm!
I would research [name]India[/name] if you really like it, some people consider it to be inappropriate due to British colonization and it’s historical use by British officers giving it to their daughters as a sign of support of colonization. I’m not sure that matters so much now but I saw this come up on a board once and it drew a lot of controversy.
Yes, there is that connection to [name]India[/name]. I’m definitely aware of the colonization issue. Two things. Does it matter as much now? I realize the name is more common in [name]Britain[/name], still, though I don’t think it’s still a sign of support for the British colonization of [name]India[/name]. And, then, is it relevant at all in [name]America[/name]? Clearly, [name]America[/name] is part of the global economy, but I just don’t know that it means the same thing. [name]Do[/name] you?
I’ve pushed my love of [name]India[/name] to the middle name spot, though. She won’t ever be used as a first name by me. Hm…
Also, @eckles7, thanks for your idea of [name]Mia[/name]! I wouldn’t have thought of that. She’s perky and spunky and I like her.
Question: Would you feel like sticking to vowel names if you had an [name]Eliza[/name] and an [name]Archer[/name]? [name]Genevieve[/name]'s suggestion of [name]Olive[/name] [name]Penelope[/name] and @rollo’s suggestion of [name]Imogen[/name] [name]Kate[/name] (thanks!) fit the bill, but I don’t think it’s necessary - maybe just somewhat fun. Perhaps I/we could play with that…
Personally I dont have a problem with [name]India[/name], I guess some people do because in the past using it as a name was a sign of support. I dont think it matters much in the states at all but on behindthename.com it gets a lot of flack because [name]India[/name] is a 3rd world country with a lot of problems. I never thought about that until reading it. I prefer [name]Indira[/name] or [name]Indra[/name] just because I think they sound nicer but if I met an [name]India[/name] I would think it was fine.
[name]India[/name]'s in my top 5, and I have considered the whole colonisation factor since I am British. But I’ve never personally heard of an [name]Indian[/name] being offended by the name, and it is quite common here (ranked 145 last year) so I assume that if a significant amount of people were offended then I would have heard something by now. I’ve never been to [name]India[/name], but it seems like a beautiful place and if I ever met an [name]Indian[/name] who was offended by it, I would be sure to explain that I mean no harm by it and that I love the name and the country it reflects. I liken it to an African being offended by someone from the US calling their daughter [name]Africa[/name], due to the past slave trade. Nowadays, it just doesn’t seem logical to assume that someone would use a name to show support for something so awful. That’s just my two cents though!
[name]Hi[/name], and sorry for the delay in responding to you all!
Thanks for your comments on [name]India[/name], @thetxbelle and [name]Genevieve[/name]. I see what both of you are saying and I agree completely. While I’ve never been to [name]India[/name] myself, my mom goes frequently. I’m still sure I wouldn’t want to use it as a first name, though…
@annie85 - Great ideas! [name]Ruby[/name] [name]Cordelia[/name] is very vintage, and [name]Ruby[/name] was my great-grandmother’s name, so that’s very nice. [name]Jasper[/name] [name]Silas[/name] is amazing, but for some reason [name]Jasper[/name] is a super pet peeve name of mine (I can’t explain it!). [name]Juniper[/name] is a total guilty pleasure name of mine and I simply adore it; your pairing with [name]Alice[/name] is divine! [name]Viola[/name] [name]Marin[/name] is pretty, and I like the connection to my familial [name]Mary[/name]'s. [name]Norah[/name]'s another pet-peeve name of mine, but the combination of [name]Norah[/name] [name]Vivien[/name] (my favorite spelling!) is quite swanky. [name]Clio[/name] [name]Marigold[/name] is so spunky and fresh, and again I love the [name]Mary[/name] connection via [name]Marigold[/name]! But, [name]Phoebe[/name] [name]Rosamund[/name] is simply glorious. I love that you said [name]Phoebe[/name] because she’s one I’ve had on my list as a sibling! Speaking of…
Sadly, my grandmother [name]Irene[/name] passed away at the beginning of [name]December[/name]. It’s made me think of using her name for a future child - in the middle spot - but I don’t want to use her actual name. I thought of [name]Iris[/name] as a compromise, because it sounds like [name]Irene[/name] and I’ve always associated irises with my gran. Someone suggested [name]Phoebe[/name] [name]Iris[/name] - I’d originally considered [name]Phoebe[/name] [name]Zara[/name] - as a sibling to [name]Eliza[/name] [name]Wren[/name] and [name]Archer[/name] [name]Milo[/name], and I’m really liking it. I just wanted to hear what you all thought of that (1) on its own, (2) compared to [name]Phoebe[/name] [name]Zara[/name], and (3) compared to any other Something [name]Iris[/name] combinations you may have for me.
aw, I’m so sorry to hear about your grandmother :(. But I think that [name]Phoebe[/name] [name]Iris[/name] is BEAUTIFUL and a great way to honor your grandmother. Especially since you’ve always associated [name]Iris[/name]'s to her. I even like it as a fn! But [name]Pheobe[/name] [name]Iris[/name] goes wonderfully in your future sib set
[name]Hope[/name] all is well and have a very happy and healthy new year!
[name]Hi[/name], how are you? I haven’t seen you around in a bit - it’s so nice to hear from you! I hope [name]Robby[/name] and [name]Violet[/name] are well and you all had (continue to have) a great holiday!
Thanks for the cheers for [name]Phoebe[/name] [name]Iris[/name]! I had considered [name]Iris[/name] as a first name a while back, but I don’t like [name]Eliza[/name] and [name]Iris[/name] (or [name]Eliza[/name] and [name]Ivy[/name], etc.) together, and I don’t want to change [name]Eliza[/name], so…yea! I’m happy that [name]Phoebe[/name] [name]Iris[/name] sounds “beautiful” to you and fits well with my other ideas.
