Using my favourite names as examples here (only expecting one right now lol) but if you were to see the sibset [name_f]Aurora[/name_f], [name_f]Violet[/name_f] and [name_u]Finley[/name_u]/[name_u]Finlay[/name_u] would you assume the person had 3 girls or 2 girls and a boy? [name_f]TIA[/name_f].
I would think two girls and a boy because the first two are so feminine and the third is unisex and more tailored.
Thank you, that’s what I’m aiming for… I’m in the UK where [name_u]Finley[/name_u] is mostly used for males and as my family are Irish so to me it is 100% boy and was put off with the unisex association it has now.
I agree, [name_u]Finley[/name_u] sounds boy to me. I think [name_u]Finn[/name_u] could be a girls name, but it doesn’t flow with [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] and [name_f]Violet[/name_f].
[name_u]Finley[/name_u] [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] was a top choice for a boy until I saw it popping up more often as a girl’s name on sites like these. We planned change to [name_m]Finnian[/name_m] instead as [name_u]Finn[/name_u] doesn’t work with our short, one syllable surname, but it doesn’t fit with [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] which we were set on as a middle. Last option was to change [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] to first and have [name_u]Finn[/name_u], [name_u]Fionn[/name_u] or [name_u]Finley[/name_u] as the middle but I do slightly prefer [name_u]Finley[/name_u]/[name_m]Finnian[/name_m] as first so keep trying to make it work lol.
[name_f]Aurora[/name_f] and [name_f]Violet[/name_f] are top choices for a girl so I’m trying to get a feel of what they all sound like together.
I’d definitely assume 2 girls and a boy, especially if you were in the UK. I don’t think anyone would expect [name_u]Finley[/name_u] to be a girl here!
I must admit I was really shocked to see it classed as unisex here and online! I work with children, too and have never come across a girl [name_u]Finley[/name_u].
However, we have a bit longer to think about [name_u]Finley[/name_u] as we had our gender scan yesterday and found our we’re expecting a girl!
I’d assume two girls and a boy - although [name_u]Finley[/name_u]/[name_u]Finlay[/name_u] can be unisex, I’ve never heard it used for a girl so my association is male (I live in the UK, so I guess it might depend on location).
[name_u]Finley[/name_u] as a gitls name is adorable. Go for it.
[name_u]Finley[/name_u] / [name_u]Finlay[/name_u] is imo a masculine name in the UK…
But [name_u]Finley[/name_u] might be a bit girlier than [name_u]Finlay[/name_u]?
I’m not sure why, tbh…
You know, someone said something similar to this on a previous post I made but from what I’ve seen online there are just as many female Finlays as there are Finleys. I know [name_u]Finlay[/name_u] is the more traditional Scottish spelling but I was leaning more towards [name_u]Finley[/name_u] because I prefer the -lee ending rather than -lay but would’ve gone -lay if it seemed to be this way.
I guess the only other option was to go [name_m]Findlay[/name_m] but I feel like it’s just causing unnesscary struggle for the poor kid - spending his life saying “no, with a d in the middle” I’d like my children to have an Irish or Gaelic name with its original spelling to honour my family but I think I’ll keep it to the middle spot.
It does seem that [name_u]Finley[/name_u]/[name_u]Finlay[/name_u] is widely debated for being a boy/girl/unisex name though and I’m shocked to learn from a post I made on another site that it’s more commonly used on girls in [name_f]Scotland[/name_f]! I honestly never thought of it as a girl’s name before looking at names online and thought it must be a new-ish trend like [name_u]James[/name_u], etc on a girl in the US but nope! Lots of girl [name_u]Finley[/name_u]/Finlays about all over the place for years apparently
Oh well! It’s something that either puts someone off or it doesn’t… We’ve taken it off the list and will either use [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] (our intended middle name) or [name_m]Finnian[/name_m] in the future if we have a boy sometime. For now, it’s a girl’s name we need to worry about finalising
[name_u]Finley[/name_u] is on my list for boy’s names! I mainly think of it as a boy name as well.
What about [name_m]Finnegan[/name_m] or [name_m]Griffin[/name_m] to get to [name_u]Finn[/name_u]?
