I just came across the name Cyril, which I haven’t given much thought to recently. It seemed old-fashioned to me, and not in a good way. But then I saw it today and I thought, What a great name! I think this name is ready for a comeback!
What name have you changed your mind about, for better or worse?
lots of vintage names! eleanor, elisabeth, nell, and ottilie come to mind. i started liking them recently, since they all have a fresh, spring-like feel!
I used to have an irrational dislike for [name_f]Penelope[/name_f], but I don’t mind it now. [name_f]Lila[/name_f] has also grown on me over the years. [name_u]Dakota[/name_u] (for a girl) was a favorite in my early teens, but I can’t say I care for it much now.
Interestingly, my opinions for boy names seem to be much more consistent and the most popular names for boys have historically been much more consistent. Coincidence?
matilda/mathilda. i used to hate it because of the movie matilda which seemed like such a strong connection i couldn’t shake at the time but now i plan to use it for one of my future daughters.
Changed from liking to not so much
[name_f]Lydia[/name_f]
[name_f]Matilda[/name_f]
[name_f]Cambria[/name_f]
[name_f]Helena[/name_f]
[name_f]Daphne[/name_f]
[name_f]Saffron[/name_f]
[name_f]Amelia[/name_f]
[name_f]Belle[/name_f]
[name_f]Winifred[/name_f]
[name_f]Harriet[/name_f]
[name_f]Alice[/name_f]
[name_f]Pearl[/name_f]
[name_f]Cecily[/name_f]
[name_f]Adelaide[/name_f]
[name_f]Felicity[/name_f]
[name_f]Lucy[/name_f]
[name_f]Aurora[/name_f]
[name_f]Olive[/name_f]
[name_f]Kaia[/name_f] thought it was a bit incomplete, a bit like dumping an a on the end of [name_u]Kai[/name_u]. Then, for whatever reason, I decided it was right for one of my characters and then, once I’d used it on them, it became a new name, full of kick and spark
Lots of names! Recently I’ve been warming to the name [name_m]Silas[/name_m], which I haven’t been a fan of in the past. What did it for me, weirdly, is realizing that it’s close to the name [name_m]Cyrus[/name_m], which I love (but can’t use). I don’t know that [name_m]Silas[/name_m] will ever make my list, but I’m definitely changing my mind about it.
[name_f]Flora[/name_f]! It has grown on me () only this week. I used to just think of the buttery spread when I heard the name before and that totally put me off, but suddenly that association doesn’t bother me much anymore. Now it sounds like a quirky and fun nature name, and I think it’d go great with my son’s name, [name_u]Robin[/name_u]. I also like that it’s a name of a not very well known goddess, making it a subtle mythological name.
[name_m]Eugene[/name_m]! I used to really hate it haha, I thought it was so old and clunky. I’ve come around to it though, it’s pretty high up on my list now! Also more recently I’ve fallen in love with [name_f]Betsy[/name_f], which I never considered before because I don’t like [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f].
I’ve done a total 180 on the names [name_u]Blair[/name_u], [name_u]Greer[/name_u] and [name_f]Fleur[/name_f]. I used to just hear “bleurgh” but now I can really appreciate the spareness of these names. They’re sleek and strong and and tailored and confident but they don’t shout about it.
[name_f]Edith[/name_f]! I used to find her old-fashioned and stuffy, not to my taste at all… but something switched in my mind and now she’s become one of my most favourite names. Not frilly but so beautiful, with a quiet strength and a lot of history to boot… I’m in love! (I also adore the nn. Edie.)
Hmm I used to not like the names [name_m]Adam[/name_m], [name_f]Sara[/name_f], [name_u]David[/name_u], [name_m]Bogdan[/name_m], [name_m]Igor[/name_m], & [name_u]Boris[/name_u] (Adam, [name_f]Sara[/name_f], & [name_u]David[/name_u] because I thought they were a little too common and overused; [name_m]Bogdan[/name_m], [name_m]Igor[/name_m], & [name_u]Boris[/name_u] because I thought they sounded like older names that felt dated). But after some time, I grew to really like these names, and might use some of them for future kids one day
I didn’t like the name [name_f]Barbara[/name_f] when I was a kid, too many moms and kids I knew named [name_f]Barbara[/name_f], but then I met a girl my son’s age (10) named [name_f]Barbara[/name_f] and now I love it.
