What's so wrong with Marie?

I have been saying to people that we might use [name]Marie[/name] as a first name. I get such sour faced reactions! I thought for sure nameberry would have a positive spin on [name]Marie[/name] as it does other old names ([name]Maude[/name], [name]Beatrix[/name], etc.) but even the nameberry entry for [name]Marie[/name] is negative :frowning: I don’t get it? Is it that bad that I should nix it altogether? I realize that it is an overused middle, but a baby [name]Marie[/name] I think would sound fresh. Opinions?

I don’t see anything wrong with [name]Marie[/name]. It’s a very typical middle name, but I don’t know anyone under 40 who has it as a first name. I think a little [name]Marie[/name] would be sweet, and “fresh” as you said! Especially if you paired it with an unexpected/uncommon middle name, such as:

[name]Marie[/name] [name]Alice[/name]
[name]Marie[/name] [name]Coral[/name]
[name]Marie[/name] [name]Alessandra[/name]
[name]Marie[/name] [name]Fiona[/name]
[name]Marie[/name] [name]Greta[/name]
[name]Marie[/name] [name]Eliza[/name]
[name]Marie[/name] [name]Lavendar[/name]

etc…

If you love it, go for it! It’s a classic name, with a sweet sound.

As a middle, I think its a bit worn out, but I think [name]Marie[/name] sounds fresh and beautiful as a first name.

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with [name]Marie[/name], and if [name]Marie[/name] is the name you love, go ahead and use it! I know a [name]Marie[/name] who’s in her early 20’s, and the name suits her perfectly. It’s a classic [name]IMO[/name], and therefore cannot be dated. Some random suggestions:

[name]Marie[/name] [name]Fiona[/name]
[name]Marie[/name] [name]Pearl[/name]
[name]Marie[/name] [name]Isabel[/name]
[name]Marie[/name] [name]Lydia[/name]
[name]Marie[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name]

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with [name]Marie[/name]. My friend had a daughter named [name]Marie[/name], and she’s probably in her 20s right now.

I love [name]Marie[/name]!
So classic and pretty. I know an absolutely adorable 5 year old [name]Marie[/name]. It is fresh as a first name [name]IMO[/name]

I definitely think that [name]Marie[/name] as a middle is very overused but as a first name, I think it’s pretty! It’s classic and simple without being over-popular.

[name]Marie[/name] is so classy and beautiful, it just sounds so sophisticated as a first name. I really love it and think it would be beautiful.

I’m just guessing… but I have noticed an anti-religious vibe coming from some people on various baby name websites. Any name that reminds people of religion in any way seems to cause quite a stir for some reason (eg. [name]Mary[/name], [name]Evangeline[/name], [name]Deacon[/name] etc…). [name]Marie[/name] and [name]Mary[/name] are always labelled as “dated” because some don’t want to come out and say what they truly feel (WARNING: Virgin [name]Mary[/name] ALERT!). Classic names are timeless so can never be dated. Although I prefer [name]Mary[/name], I think [name]Marie[/name] would be pretty option for a first name. If you love it, don’t let the negativity get you down!

The French have some wonderful Marie combos such as…

Marie Thérèse
Marie Béatrice
Marie Agnès
Marie Elisabeth
Marie Camille
Marie Liliane
Marie Cécile
Marie Adélaïde
Marie Catherine
Marie Violette
Marie Vivienne

Marie Gabrielle
Marie Estelle
Marie Simone
Marie Juliette

I like [name]Marie[/name] and I see nothing wrong with it. It’s the cute little white cat from the Aristocrats!

I like [name]Marie[/name]. I like it with longer/eccentric middles, and I don’t like it as a middle, only as a first, my same rules for [name]Rose[/name] and [name]Grace[/name]. (which are also beaten to death as middle names).

I’ve gotten positive reactions to it on Nameberry before.

At the moment I quite like [name]Marie[/name] [name]Kezia[/name] and [name]Marie[/name] [name]Kelilah[/name].

I don’t know if I can use it as our last name ends in a -y sound so I go back and forth between [name]Marie[/name] and [name]Mara[/name]. [name]One[/name] or the other would definitely be used in my top five usable combos for girls.

I love it. I think [name]Marie[/name] is a beautiful name, albeit a bit worn out in the middle now, but refreshing in the first slot.

My main issue with [name]Marie[/name] is the meaning, but I’m big on name meanings.

I agree that I was surprised with the negative entry for [name]Marie[/name] on the nameberry site. I like it a lot and have considered using it. I have a tough time picking a middle name for it though.

I don’t like the name [name]Mary[/name] because of the Virgin [name]Mary[/name] connection and I am a [name]Christian[/name]. I just feel certain religions give the Virgin [name]Mary[/name] more credit then they should and I don’t want to add to that. kwim? But I do like [name]Marie[/name] and [name]Mariah[/name]. I noticed [name]Marie[/name] after watching Aristocats with my daughter for the hundredth time. lol I think it is adorable.

[name]Marie[/name] [name]Anastasia[/name]

I second the suggestion of [name]Marie[/name] [name]Anastasia[/name] - beautiful!

I really like [name]Marie[/name] as a first name. It’s fresh and sweet.

I like [name]Marie[/name]! I wouldn’t use it as a middle, probably, because it’s more of a filler now, but it’s a lovely middle.

Thanks for all the positive replies! I am glad that I don’t appear to just have horrible taste in names

We were thinking [name]Marie[/name] [name]Maude[/name] [name]Lucille[/name], or [name]Marie[/name] [name]Beatrice[/name] [name]Louise[/name]. Opinions?

I definately would love to meet a little [name]Marie[/name]. I think it would sound so fresh and adorable. I say go for it!

I wonder if part of the negative reaction towards [name]Marie[/name] is that French names seem a bit out right now.

I prefer [name]Maria[/name] to [name]Marie[/name], but I think it would sound fresh on a little girl. It’s cute on a youngster but also would work great on an adult, and I don’t think either name is dated in a bad way at all. Dated as a middle, maybe, but not as a first.
