What's up with Linnea?

In another thread that is about horrible names, this got mentioned several times.

Is there something about it that I don’t see? (not American)

It is super popular in [name]Sweden[/name], Norway and Germany, I’m not crazy about it but never saw any teasing potential.

So, what’s wrong with the name?

I don’t get it, either. I think [name]Linn[/name]éa is pretty. I’ve heard people say it seems made up but I’ve never thought so.

I think it’s beautiful, and I don’t get it either. My husband dislikes [name]Linnea[/name] because he thinks it’s too close to the word “linear.” [name]Even[/name] if that association is there, I still don’t think there’s any valid teasing potential!

I agree with everyone! [name]Even[/name] though I wouldn’t use [name]Linnea[/name] personally, I do like it a lot and would be impressed to meet one. I don’t understand where the teasing potential (or the idea that it’s a bad name in any light) comes from! Did they give any general impression as to why it would be a bad name on the thread? I really don’t get it, lol.

[name]Linnea[/name] is a beautiful name, and there’s a wonderfully gorgeous picture book that is still in print that uses this name. I can’t imagine, in a world where [name]Neveah[/name] is used, that [name]Linnea[/name] would be anything but lovely.

I tend to avoid those threads but I’m surprised to see [name]Linnea[/name] listed. Personally I don’t like [name]Linnea[/name] at all but there isn’t anything horrible about it.

I think [name]Linnea[/name] is a pretty name! Not sure why people don’t like it.

I had that book growing up, it’s about [name]Monet[/name], right? That’s where I first heard the name and have loved it ever since. I think it’s beautiful and SO underused in the states.

Wait, seriously? It’s a gorgeous name!

Thanks for the answers!

[name]One[/name] of the posts said something like “poor child” so I thought, that I’m maybe overlooking something I just don’t see as a non native speaker. A word I don’t have in mind, a tampon brand, a porn store, I don’t know

Apparently it was just personal taste then. It’s not on my list or anything, I was just so surprised and wondering.

I don’t get it either! Although I first thought it was pronounced with the stress on the first syllable [name]LINN[/name]-ee-ah and I thought it was so pretty. The correct pronunciation is pretty too though- is it [name]Lin[/name]-AY-ah? Either way, I don’t get the hate.

Yes! A girl named [name]Linnea[/name] visits [name]Monet[/name]'s garden. It’s also the name of a flower, which of course is named for Linnaeus.

I’m also perplexed as to why [name]Linnea[/name] ended up on a “worst names” names multiple times. I’d like to see an explanation. It’s not an American thing, from what I’ve observed.

Some of the members of this site are just over dramatic. [name]Linnea[/name] is not a horrible name. I tend to avoid those threads, simply because most of the time the “horrible” names listed are just not the poster’s personal naming style.

It’s actually one of my favorites. I think it must just be personal taste. Usually if there’s a bad association the person will flat out state it. I read the book growing up and I think it’s quite pretty, although I wouldn’t want people tempted to call her [name]Lynn[/name].
