What's wrong with Flora?

We are expecting our third child and I absolutely adore [name_f]Flora[/name_f] for a girl! But every time I mention the name to others I’m met with either a “urgh”, silence or “oh… well that’s… different”. [name_m]Even[/name_m] more rudely I’ve been told that hopefully if we name a girl [name_f]Flora[/name_f] she won’t be a “heffer” (fat) or ugly.

But, what exactly is so wrong with [name_f]Flora[/name_f]!?

I’m aware its not particularly main stream, and I know for some people all they can think is either butter or gut flora, but still… I don’t get it! I think [name_f]Flora[/name_f] is a lovely name!

It’s ‘vintage’ (nice way of saying old-fashioned). I associate [name_f]Flora[/name_f] with names like [name_f]Bertha[/name_f], [name_f]Gertrude[/name_f] and [name_f]Hildegarde[/name_f]. And it reduces a female child to a plant --and not even a specific plant, but just general ‘vegetation’, which offends me on some level. (Same reason I wouldn’t use a flower name, though flowers and some of their names are pretty, at least). [name_f]Flora[/name_f] isn’t horrible, but I’d keep looking.

Uh…what? [name_f]Flora[/name_f] is a gorgeous name!

I like [name_f]Flora[/name_f]. It reminds me of the fairies in “Sleeping Beauty” [name_f]Flora[/name_f], [name_f]Fauna[/name_f] and Merriweather:)
I like [name_f]Flora[/name_f] is lovely and you should use it if you love it! Who cares if anyone else hates it?

[name_f]Flora[/name_f] is a lovely name. Yes there is the margerine and that puts some people off but if you love it use it!

I think [name_f]Flora[/name_f] is very nice, it is vintage and old-fashioned (which I personally love). I wouldn’t associate with names like [name_f]Bertha[/name_f] and [name_f]Gertrude[/name_f] (Those names seem too old I guess). I would group [name_f]Flora[/name_f] with the more usable vintage choices that are slowly coming back. I don’t understand how [name_f]Flora[/name_f] can be associated with an overweight and/or ugly girl (that is quite rude actually). So in short, if you and your husband love the name, I would use it. Not everyone will like your name whether it is super popular or less common.

I also think of Sleeping Beauty but that’s a good thing. I love [name_f]Flora[/name_f]. It’s sweet and soft but it ages really well and works so good for every age. I also like it as a nickname for [name_f]Floriana[/name_f] or [name_u]Florentine[/name_u] or [name_f]Florence[/name_f]. And on another note, I love [name_f]Fauna[/name_f] too :stuck_out_tongue:

But yea, there’s nothing wrong with it. It’s gorgeous.

I think [name_f]Flora[/name_f] is a beautiful name!! I also think of the fairies in sleeping beauty, but not in a bad way. I think it is an enchanting name!!

I think there is nothing wrong with it! It is lovely!!

The only thing negative that I had ever heard was that in [name_f]England[/name_f] it’s the name of a margarine brand. But, I happen to love the name [name_f]Flora[/name_f], if DH did not veto it would have been in my top picks for a future daughter. I think it’s vintage, classic, and feminine. Really, what does [name_f]Flora[/name_f] have to do with being a “heifer” or ugly. Some people are just rude, I mean if I dislike a name I think I can say that but nobody needs to be ugly about it. If you love it, I say go for it.

Absolutely nothing. [name_f]Flora[/name_f] is such a lovely name

I think it is a perfectly usable name.
However, like jtucker said it is a brand of margarine and I can see children running with that association (depending on where you live).
It also is a vintage name which I strongly associate with [name_f]Florence[/name_f], but names like [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] coming back it shouldn’t be too much.

It’s the name of a margarine here in [name_f]England[/name_f], but that doesn’t seem like such a big issue. I don’t understand why so many people have given you bad feedback, it’s a pretty, perfectly legitimate name and I’d barely bat an eye if I met a child with it.

Agreed! Also, I don’t know why someone who was overweight or a little girl that isn’t model-esque beautiful couldn’t wear it?! This sort of offends me on a personal level–I am obese, and have struggled with trying to combat that for years–what, [name_f]Flora[/name_f] wouldn’t be good enough for me, or potentially a daughter of mine who could inherit my bad genes?

It’s not my favorite name ever, but it is beautiful, and if I’m remembering your sons’ names correctly ([name_u]Tristan[/name_u] and [name_u]Noah[/name_u]?), I think [name_f]Flora[/name_f] is just fab with them! I would love to meet a little [name_f]Flora[/name_f], of any shape or shade of beauty.

[name_f]Flora[/name_f] is stunning! I’ve always loved that name.

[name_f]Flora[/name_f] is beautiful. (as is [name_f]Fauna[/name_f], which is my personal preference of the 2, but [name_f]Flora[/name_f] is gorgeous) Not everyone will love your name choice because everyone has different tastes in names. The fat comments though? Seriously? There is no such thing as a “fat” name and I find this sort of offensive to comment on a child being fat being related to their name.

[name_f]Flora[/name_f] is my most favourite name ever. Always has been. And honestly, I’ve only ever heard people say positive things. I actually know two toddler girls named [name_f]Flora[/name_f]. For me, it holds very dear sentimental meaning as my great aunt was named [name_f]Florrie[/name_f] ([name_f]Flora[/name_f]). honestly, I can’t see how anyone would think this name was anything but beautiful! But that’s just me.

[name_f]Flora[/name_f]'s not my favourite name in the world - it sounds kind of Nordic or something to me - but I don’t see anything wrong with it, and I certainly don’t associate it with any particular body type. People can be so rude.

I adore the name [name_f]Flora[/name_f]! This is actually on my husband and my list for our baby (don’t know gender yet). I live in the States so I don’t have any negative butter association with the name. It’s a hidden gem, especially with all the other flower names on the rise. Go for it!

I prefer [name_f]Florence[/name_f]. [name_f]Flora[/name_f] is too old fashioned for me. It also reminds me of the margarine.

[name_f]Flora[/name_f] is gorgeous. Although I do use the margarine sometimes, the first association for me is flowers. So don’t worry what other people think, rude or otherwise. The name isn’t crude or offensive, so why shouldn’t you use it if you love it so much?
