So, I was recently browsing around looking at names and I came across one of my favorite names [name_f]Klara[/name_f]. I’ve always like the name [name_f]Klara[/name_f], but with a K instead of a C. For some reason the [name_f]Clara[/name_f] spelling has never appealed to me. I was reading comments and no one seems to like that it starts with K. The name [name_f]Klara[/name_f] is used widely in Europe and I just wondering why not here in the US.
What is everyone’s opinions on not just the [name_f]Klara[/name_f] spelling but K names in general? I know they get a lot of hate because of the Kardashians but I would love to hear from everyone else!
I vastly prefer [name_f]Klara[/name_f] to [name_f]Clara[/name_f] too, and (other than [name_f]Kate[/name_f]) it’s pretty much the only C name I prefer with a K.
I don’t hate K names to the same degree as others on Nameberry ([name_f]Kaia[/name_f], [name_f]Kerensa[/name_f] and [name_f]Keziah[/name_f] are lovely), but my hesitation with using one would be that ‘K’ as a consonant feels quite dated (‘J’ feels the same to me). The Kardashian factor certainly doesn’t help either.
[name_f]Klara[/name_f] is gorgeous though and I definitely think you should use it if you like it!
I personally prefer a ‘C’ spelling but that doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong with ‘K’ names.
Maybe commenters on the [name_f]Klara[/name_f] version are more familiar with the [name_f]Clara[/name_f] spelling and that’s why they were so vocal about the ‘K’.
I think K can come across as harsh anx jarring to some people, and they prefer the softer C option (just a theory). Plus as @Minxtruck pointed out the Kardashians haven’t helped. I don’t mind Ks where it’s a genuine variation or spelling (say [name_f]Klara[/name_f], [name_f]Kalliope[/name_f], or [name_f]Kerensa[/name_f]), but shoving them where they’re not needed is quite a put off. I personally like Ks better when they’re not the first letter, say in [name_m]Luka[/name_m]/[name_m]Lukas[/name_m] or [name_m]Nikolai[/name_m] (I could only think kf boy examples haha); it’s difficult to describe but I think they look older and more historical for some reason.
I love [name_f]Klara[/name_f]. I’ve never heard that variation before. I think Europe uses K much more frequently than we do in the states, but it’s much less wholesome than C and can be substituted in a variety of names.
I have a [name_f]Clara[/name_f], so the K looks all kinds of wrong to me. If you use the Clar uh prn, it fits. I say [name_f]Claire[/name_f] uh. I live in the South and everyone here says [name_f]Claire[/name_f] uh. I had a British lady say Clar uh once.
I prefer [name_f]Klara[/name_f] too, though weirdly, [name_f]Cara[/name_f] with a C is my preference over [name_f]Kara[/name_f] even though the names are similar. I also way prefer [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] with a K.
But then I live in Europe and am as use to C spellings (common in certain European languages) and K spellings.
Certain names I actually prefer with the K
The reason for some people preferring C may be that they assume K is an attempt to spell it a different, non-standard way, being unfamiliar with it being widely used in Europe. It looks good with both a C and K.
It may be something to do with differences in language between Europe and the US. [name_f]Klara[/name_f] looks more Germanic/Eastern European to me, whilst [name_f]Clara[/name_f] looks more romantic. I’d pronounce them pretty much identically with perhaps a smidgen more emphasis on the ‘k’ than the ‘c’.
I could’ve written this post myself. I love, love, love [name_f]Klara[/name_f]. I find [name_f]Clara[/name_f] to be okay. Yes, it’s the same way but I’m a really visual person. I do worry the general population would see it more Kardashian-like ([name_f]Chloe[/name_f] being [name_f]Khloe[/name_f]) than it being a legitimate spelling.
I pronounce [name_f]Klara[/name_f] and [name_f]Clara[/name_f] the same, KLAAH-ra. I like both spellings, I like [name_f]Klara[/name_f] slightly more than [name_f]Clara[/name_f], but as you can see from my signature I’d use [name_f]Clara[/name_f].
I don’t give enough of a damn about the Kardashians for it to affect how I see K names.
If a girl’s name starts with a ‘K’ sound, I generally like it to start with a K and not a C. That’s why my top 3 favourite C girls names are: [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], [name_f]Cerise[/name_f] and [name_f]Cherry[/name_f]. As a pp as said, I think people imagine the letter K as more harsh than the letter C.
