Curious to see what people think of the name Evander, and in particular how people’s opinions differ based on their genders. I think there might be a difference based on gender but I might be wrong. And do you think the Holyfield connection is problematic?
Let’s see:
- I’m male and I like the name
- I’m male and I dislike the name
- I’m female and I like the name
- I’m female and I dislike the name

I had no idea who [name_m]Evander[/name_m] Holyfield was until I googled him just now, so I don’t see it as problematic.

Until reading this reply, I thought Holyfield sounded like a TV show…

you’re missing an option for non-binary / gnc folks… that might skew your results.

I love Evander! And nope, the association doesn’t bother me. I was so little watching that match, but I never remembered his name!

Please remove one vote from ‘I do not identify as male or female and I like the name’. I wanted to see what the viewpoints were and then realised that I couldn’t un-vote. I identify as female and voted on the original poll.
I think mainly what this poll determined is that there are very few males on Nameberry.
But on a more relevant note, I have no idea who [name_m]Evander[/name_m] Holyfield is and I like the name.

[name_m]Evander[/name_m] Holyfield was a boxer who famously had his ear bitten by [name_m]Mike[/name_m] [name_u]Tyson[/name_u] in a match in the 90s.

yeah…
I also wonder about age sometimes!

I do think of Holyfield, but I don’t know that it’s a bad association… Evander’s nice enough, and I like the sound, but I am not terribly fond of it in general. I just prefer [name_u]Everett[/name_u] (LOVE!) and [name_u]Evan[/name_u] (like) to [name_m]Evander[/name_m]. It always feels like a smoosh of [name_u]Evan[/name_u] or [name_u]Everett[/name_u] and [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] to me… I like [name_u]Everett[/name_u] [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] infinitely more than [name_m]Evander[/name_m].

[name_f]Awesome[/name_f] of you to add that option!
I really love [name_m]Evander[/name_m], more so than the other Ev- names. It feels very adventurous and energetic to me, and I get lots of greens and golds. And for some reason, I frequently picture [name_m]Ewan[/name_m] McGregor?
I’m in my 30s and live in the US, and had not heard of [name_m]Evander[/name_m] Holyfield, though once I looked it up, I recalled the incident with [name_u]Tyson[/name_u]. But it’s an obscure enough reference that it doesn’t detract from the name, in my opinion. Maybe if Holyfield had been the one doing the ear-biting, I’d feel differently.

I do love [name_m]Evander[/name_m]. I’m female if that matters. I do think of [name_m]Evander[/name_m] Holyfield because I vividly remember that fight and unfortunately that’s the only pop culture reference or any reference to the name that I have. But I can separate the reference away and say that I actually still do love the name.

Yes 30s here too and I thought of [name_m]Evander[/name_m] Holyfield and am surprised it’s not more recognized. But regardless I still think it’s a great name! Seems like there won’t be much a connection to it for the younger generations.

The [name_m]Evander[/name_m] Holyfield connection is vaguely on my periphery, but I didn’t even think of it when I first came across [name_m]Evander[/name_m]. I really like [name_m]Evander[/name_m]!

I think [name_m]Evander[/name_m] is handsome, underused and I wish I had used it over the name [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] for my youngest son.
I don’t think the [name_m]Evander[/name_m] Hollyfield connection is an issue at all. Perhaps a lot of the baby boomer generation recall the boxer but not so much with the future generations
