I’m going through a similar process right now, and considering [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] myself too.
I think something I’ve realised is that the search for the “right” name doesn’t really exist. I found myself going through every name I could possibly think of, searching for the one, true, perfect name that felt “just right”. [name_f]Any[/name_f] name you choose will feel a bit weird at first, because it’s not the name you’re used to being called.
Part of the process I think is sitting with that initial feeling and seeing what happens. If the discomfort with the name grows, it’s a sign it’s not the right name. If the discomfort wanes, then it might be the right choice.
I thought I’d find my new name and it would just click and I’d be like “yep, that’s my name!”. But I don’t think it works like that for most people. This sounds like a bit of a cop-out answer, but I think you just have to pick one. [name_f]Mia[/name_f] and [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] are both lovely names - recognisable, easy to spell and pronounce, and both work well in multiple languages if that’s important to you. [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] has more nickname potential than [name_f]Mia[/name_f], so that might be worth thinking about too.
[name_m]Can[/name_m] you try them out? [name_m]Like[/name_m] if you order food or a coffee from somewhere, and you can try [name_f]Mia[/name_f] out, then go somewhere else another day and try [name_f]Olivia[/name_f]. [name_f]See[/name_f] how you feel when other people call you it - that really helped me! I really wanted to be [name_f]Alice[/name_f] / [name_f]Allie[/name_f] at one point. I ordered some food, and when they called [name_f]Allie[/name_f] I just grimaced a little. I love the name so much, but it became clear to me at that moment that it wasn’t “my” name. I tried [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] recently and liked how it felt to hear someone call me it, so that helped me see it as a good option! [name_m]You[/name_m] could also make a private/secret social media account (or use mock-ups on something like Canva) to see what your name would look like in that context and test out a few.
I would say to remember that it can take a little while to adjust to a new name, so you might find both of them a bit strange at first. [name_m]You[/name_m] could explore other options at that point if you wanted to, but also consider that you might just need some exposure to the new name to get more used to it!
I think we have very similar experiences! This is pretty much exactly how I feel. “Name dysphoria” puts it well. When people call me by my current/birth name, it just feels wrong. It’s not my name! I love it on others, but I’ve just always felt like it wasn’t mine. Being able to change your name can be so freeing!
Good luck <3
