When is a name to popular to use?

When does a name become too popular to use?
My first borns name only just registers in the top 1000, although I have met 4 boys who share his name this year alone.

My new name crush is registering in the top 100 in my country, although I am quite surprised at that, because I have not met any and thought it was rare.

I am not sure how the popularity name rankings work, could soneo e explain it to me?
If a name is no#1 how many in 100 get this name, vs no# 560 for example?

If I was to use this name in the top 100, would I be forever meeting people with the same name?

It’s really up to you to decide how popular is too popular for your liking. Some names are more popular in certain regions than others, which could explain why you’ve met four boys with your first child’s name, and none with your crush, even though the latter is ranked higher.

As for how many babies per year might be given a certain name, it’s not based on how many babies out of 100. They count the number of babies that were given that name according to the Social Security registry (In the US. Other countries have their own equivalents).

If you want to see how many babies exactly were given a particular name in the past few years, this is a good site to use: Name Popularity - How popular is the name compared To other names.

I think it is completely up to you on how popular is too popular. I think if you love the name, unless someone you are friends with or closely associated with uses it, you should use it even if it is popular! Think about it, lots of people you grew up with likely had the same name and it never caused major issues. [name_m]Just[/name_m] makes for nicknames, but it isn’t a problem!

My attitude is pick a name you’ll like no matter how many people your child shares it with. Names have a habit of grouping geographically and in certain racial/socioeconomic groups, so [name_f]Lila[/name_f] might actually be much more popular than [name_f]Ava[/name_f] in your area, even though [name_f]Ava[/name_f] is a top 10 name and [name_f]Lila[/name_f] doesn’t even crack the top 100.

Statistics give you a great sense of the population as a whole and what you can expect to be popular in general, but there’s no way to know what names you’ll hear most in your social group or community.

Personally, when I heard one name too often or know several people with that name in person (especially if I strongly associate the name with them). I care more about my personal experience than statistics.
