When the alternate spelling is better

Which names do you like the alternate spelling better than the original or more widely used spelling?

For me it’s [name_f]Chelsie[/name_f]

This is an incredibly unpopular opinion but my all time favorite name is [name_u]Saige[/name_u], which is I strongly prefer over [name_u]Sage[/name_u]. Again super unpopular but hey :joy:

I love [name_f]Norah[/name_f], [name_f]Journee[/name_f], [name_u]Kelsie[/name_u], [name_u]Everley[/name_u], and [name_f]Meggan[/name_f]! Definitely lots of guilty pleasures here :relaxed:

Oh, fun question!

If we’re just talking girl names I like…

[name_f]Aine[/name_f] vs. Anya…even if they are slightly different names.

[name_f]Aoibhe[/name_f] vs. [name_f]Aoife[/name_f]. Neither name is popular, but even in the Midwest U.S, I’ve run across a few Aoifes. [name_f]Aoibhe[/name_f] looks softer to me.

[name_u]Clare[/name_u] vs. [name_f]Claire[/name_f]

[name_f]Giulia[/name_f] vs. [name_f]Julia[/name_f]

[name_f]Giorgia[/name_f] vs. [name_f]Georgia[/name_f]

[name_f]Isobel[/name_f] vs. [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f]

[name_f]Lilie[/name_f] or [name_f]Lili[/name_f] instead of [name_f]Lily[/name_f]

[name_f]Lilian[/name_f] vs. [name_f]Lillian[/name_f]

[name_f]Maisy[/name_f] vs. [name_f]Maisie[/name_f]

[name_f]Sofie[/name_f] vs. [name_f]Sophie[/name_f]

[name_f]Sofia[/name_f] vs. [name_f]Sophia[/name_f]

[name_f]Tallula[/name_f] vs. [name_f]Tallulah[/name_f]

[name_u]Zoe[/name_u] vs. Zoey…I was very surprised (unpleasantly surprised!) to learn that [name_f]Zoey[/name_f] is actually on the SSA charts than [name_u]Zoe[/name_u].

Wow, there’s actually a lot!

Oooh interesting!

I like [name_f]Elinor[/name_f] more than [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f], [name_f]Everleigh[/name_f] more than [name_u]Everly[/name_u], and [name_f]Neve[/name_f] over [name_f]Niamh[/name_f]

For me it’s [name_f]Pauleen[/name_f] !

I would only ever use it for a middle name but it would honour both our moms.

I also have a name that has several accepted spellings ; [name_f]Alana[/name_f] , [name_f]Alanna[/name_f] , Allanna , Allannah , [name_f]Alanah[/name_f], - I only like [name_f]Alana[/name_f]

I also love [name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f], [name_f]Katherine[/name_f], [name_f]Gillian[/name_f] ,

I prefer [name_f]Aliza[/name_f] over [name_f]Eliza[/name_f]
[name_f]Elowyn[/name_f] instead of [name_f]Elowen[/name_f]
Jozi instead of [name_u]Josie[/name_u]
And this one is probably the weirdest but Qira instead of [name_f]Kira[/name_f], there’s a [name_f]Star[/name_f] Wars character named Qi’ira, pronounced just like [name_f]Kira[/name_f], and since I saw it I thought it was so cool but still wearable to replace the K with a Q

[name_f]Elanor[/name_f] over every other spelling of the name! It has the lotr association, it has the lovely flower association (fictional, but good enough for me!), and its Elvish meaning “sun star” is just so beautiful!

I’m sure there are probably a few more I like, but that one came to mind first because I love it so dearly :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

I prefer ……
[name_f]Isobel[/name_f] over [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f].
[name_f]Katherine[/name_f] over [name_f]Catherine[/name_f]
[name_f]Margot[/name_f] over [name_f]Margo[/name_f] or [name_f]Margaux[/name_f]
[name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] over any of the other spellings
[name_f]Anneliese[/name_f] over any of the other spellings

[name_u]Tristyn[/name_u] > [name_u]Tristan[/name_u]
[name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f] > [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]
[name_f]Hetty[/name_f] > [name_f]Hettie[/name_f]
Oli > [name_u]Ollie[/name_u]
[name_f]Claira[/name_f] > [name_f]Clara[/name_f]
[name_u]Quin[/name_u] > [name_u]Quinn[/name_u]
[name_f]Lyla[/name_f] > [name_f]Lilah[/name_f]

I’m sure there are more, I’ll add more later if I can think of any!

I like [name_f]Isobel[/name_f], [name_f]Lyla[/name_f], [name_f]Perrie[/name_f], [name_f]Islay[/name_f] and [name_u]Marlowe[/name_u]

For me it’s…

[name_f]Noora[/name_f] > [name_f]Nora[/name_f]

[name_f]Isabela[/name_f] > [name_f]Isabella[/name_f]

[name_f]Olivea[/name_f] > [name_f]Olivia[/name_f]

[name_m]Silus[/name_m] > [name_m]Silas[/name_m]

[name_u]Clare[/name_u] > [name_f]Claire[/name_f]

[name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f] > [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]

[name_f]Julieta[/name_f] > [name_f]Julietta[/name_f]

[name_u]Tristen[/name_u] > [name_u]Tristan[/name_u]

[name_u]Julien[/name_u] > [name_u]Julian[/name_u]

[name_m]Stellen[/name_m] > [name_m]Stellan[/name_m]

[name_f]Margaux[/name_f] > [name_f]Margo[/name_f]

[name_f]Alenor[/name_f] > [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]

[name_f]Paola[/name_f] > [name_f]Paula[/name_f]

Off the top of my head…

[name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f] > [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]
[name_f]Elinor[/name_f] > [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]
[name_f]Isobel[/name_f] > [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f]
[name_f]Norah[/name_f] > [name_f]Nora[/name_f]
[name_f]Alys[/name_f] > [name_f]Alice[/name_f] (in most cases, not all)
[name_f]Elyse[/name_f] > [name_f]Elise[/name_f]
[name_f]Lyla[/name_f] > [name_f]Lila[/name_f]
[name_f]Katherine[/name_f] > [name_f]Catherine[/name_f]
[name_f]Romee[/name_f] > [name_u]Romy[/name_u]

I loveeee Aliza over Eliza!

I love the look of Amelia, but for the pronounciation I want in Spanish, I wouldn’t mind spelling it as Amilia.

Elanor and Eleanor are both beautiful to me.

Everlie & Rosaly are nice looking, I wouldn’t mind seeing them spelt like this!

& I love the Margot spelling, but personally I’d use Margo.

To me [name_f]Madisyn[/name_f] is nicer than [name_u]Madison[/name_u], so is [name_u]Jordyn[/name_u] when used on a girl

Not really an alternative spelling since it’s the form in other languages, but I strongly prefer [name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f] over [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] :face_with_hand_over_mouth: (on a similar note: [name_f]Amalie[/name_f] > Amelie)

My obviously very subjective guidelines…

Generally when the spelling makes the pronunciation more obvious in the language/ place it will be used. Examples:
Zoey over Zoe (actually Zoi over Zoe too!)
Killian over Cillian
May over Mae

Girly spellings for girls! I mean, why not?? If thats the vibe you love….
Saige over Sage
Isabelle over Isabel
Annabelle over Anabel
Leigh over Lee

However this is in conflict with my dislike for extraneous letters when I don’t find them pretty…
Everly over Everleigh
Hanna over Hannah

Spellings with more beautiful letters. Which for me is K over C, Z over S sometimes, Y sometimes:
Katherine over Catherine
Elizabeth over Elisabeth
Caitlyn over Caitlin

[name_f]Lyla[/name_f] over [name_f]Lila[/name_f]
[name_f]Emilie[/name_f] over [name_f]Emily[/name_f]
[name_f]Katelyn[/name_f] over [name_f]Caitlin[/name_f]
[name_f]Maeve[/name_f] over [name_f]Meabh[/name_f]

@MichelleM [name_f]Aoibhe[/name_f] and [name_f]Aoife[/name_f] are different! Ee-va vs ee-fa :slight_smile:
