What do you do when your favourite name is incredibly popular!? I adore the name [name]Lachlan[/name], problem is it has been in the top 10 in my state (in Australia) since 1997 (except 2010 it was #13), and in the top 100 since the 1980s!
Despite this, I’ve never personally known a [name]Lachlan[/name], so it doesn’t feel that popular to me. I like the idea of givig my kids uncommon names, but I love [name]Lachlan[/name] so much! Should I start looking for less popular names to love, or grace my son with a name he will share with countless others? Does anyone else have this problem, what do you plan to do?
If it’s a name that I love to the point where everything else pales in comparison, I’ll try to use it somewhere, even if it’s in the middle with a considerably less popular name up front.
If after you’ve carried him for nine months and he’s born and nothing else seems to fit him like [name]Lachlan[/name], then I would say you should definitely use it.
I don’t think popularity would factor into my decision to name my child. If I loved a name, I would go for it!
I agree with this completely. For example, my favorite name for as long as I can remember is [name]Charlotte[/name]. It’s increasing in popularity and I could see it breaking into the top ten. But it has everything I want in a name, and no less popular alternative (like [name]Carlotta[/name]) beats [name]Charlotte[/name]. So regardless of how popular [name]Charlotte[/name] is whenever I have children, I’ll still use it anyway because I hate the idea of settling with a name.
It’s not a bad thing to be concerned about popularity, though. You can definitely look for other names and see if you love them as much if not more than [name]Lachlan[/name],but if nothing compares to [name]Lachlan[/name], then go ahead and use it! :]
I have this problem with [name]Anna[/name]. The perennially popular [name]Anna[/name]. And [name]Audrey[/name], but I’ve settled on [name]Audra[/name] as a sweet alternative.
[name]Anna[/name] is such a classic though, people don’t see her as popular in the ‘trendy’ sense. It would be percieved as more refreshing and sweet, especially here on Nameberry. I’m not sure the same could be said for [name]Lachlan[/name] in Australia though.
If you can’t find something else you love as much, popularity alone should not keep you from using it. ^^
I know!! [name]Lachlan[/name] is such a wonderful name but is so popular here in Australia. I’ve known a couple of little Lachies but far more Biblical names. If it’s your favourite name for a future little gentleman, definitely use it. [name]Don[/name]'t live with the regret of using something else.
xx
I love [name]Lochlan[/name] (in it’s various spellings, lol). I have the same issue with [name]Holly[/name]. It’s one of my favourite names of all time but it’s just too popular for me to use (always hovering round the 20’s) In the end I decided to give it up and find another name to love because I don’t like thinking that if I have a daughter named [name]Holly[/name] she would most probably have to go by ‘[name]Holly[/name] Surname Initial’. I think you have to choose which means more to you: the name or keeping away from popularity. But like the above poster said, if you can’t imagine your son being called anything else, then I think you’ll regret not using it.
I have the same issue with:
[name]Lauren[/name]
[name]Alice[/name]
[name]Emilie[/name]
[name]Oliver[/name]
My only suggestion is put it in the middle. Sorry.
I have the same problem with [name]Charlotte[/name]. Its been my favorite name since I was a little girl and has a sentimental value to me. I’ve never met a [name]Charlotte[/name] personally but its no. 27 in popularity and keeps on climbing! I still love it and keep it on my list. If I ever have a daughter I plan to wait until shes born to name her. If she looks and “feels” like a [name]Charlotte[/name], then she’ll be a [name]Charlotte[/name]. For me, its more about what suits the child and the feeling you get when you call their name, like its the most beautiful thing in the world.
I think the whole popularity issue is different for boys though. Most boys don’t mind sharing their name with four other people in their class. My bio class had five Joshuas in it and they all thought it was really funny when the teacher mixed them up. You might mind but the boy wearing the name probably won’t.
Some popular names I also love:
[name]Lily[/name]
[name]Oliver[/name]
[name]Lauren[/name]
[name]Rose[/name]
[name]Emma[/name]
[name]Charlotte[/name]
I know many people here are suggesting to put it in the middle name spot, but I think it goes best as a first name.
I’m the same with [name]Liam[/name]. I absolutely love it because it’s so friendly and likeable. I’m a long way off from having kids but I can definitely see using [name]Liam[/name] in the future regardless of its popularity.
I love [name]Lachlan[/name] and it’s def in my top 5 for boys - probably number 1 or 2 in fact! You should go for it. It’s strange because it’s really not popular here in the US! Are there other nicknames for [name]Lachlan[/name] other than [name]Lockie[/name]?
I’ve had similar problems. My oldest son’s name was #10 when he was born and I hesitated using it, but I am so glad that I did. If you love it, then it’s worth it to use it. He will be your [name]Lachlan[/name].
[name]Lachlan[/name] is popular here in [name]Oz[/name].
Nearly every year the class I teach has had a [name]Lachlan[/name] in it.
That said only ever [name]ONE[/name] [name]Lachlan[/name]. Also, all the [name]Lachlan[/name]'s I have taught have been bright, bubbly, pleasant and outgoing.
I say go with [name]Lachlan[/name]- it is a cool name after all- that’s why other people agree and choose it too.
